- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2012I bought two of these for two different computers and they work perfectly with Gmail Video Chat. All I did was install the plug-in from Gmail and I was good to go, no problems at all. The only thing I didn't like was that the cord was very stiff and "kinked" from packaging. The camera is so light that the cord, reverting back to its original, packaged shape, would tip the camera over. I had to put a heavy book on top of the cord so my camera wouldn't tip over on my desk.
The image may be a little pixelated, but I don't think it's as bad as other people are claiming. My husband and I used these cameras to video chat all week while he was out of town and we were very pleased with their performance. For $6 each, you really can't go wrong!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2012Pros:
-The price. For less than $7 this is a pretty good webcam, when it works.
-The picture quality. A 5 MP Camera is all you really need, especially when you're not looking to spend much on a webcam.
Cons:
-My webcam stopped working on the first day. If I had reviewed it right after the first use I would've given it 5 stars. Like I said, it is a pretty decent webcam. My computer stopped recognizing it after only a few hours of use. The webcam became disconnected and I had to keep changing the USB Port it was in to try to get my computer to recognize the webcam again. I was able to get it to work again later on. However, the problem became persistant and now I can't even get it to work at all (only my 2nd day of owning it, bought new).
-The picture they show of the webcam has it clipped on the top of a laptop. Not sure what laptop they are using but it isn't even close to being able to mount on mine. I was hoping to be able to just mount it on my laptop but it doesn't do that.
Conclusion:
I am hoping that I just received a defective webcam but for the price I paid ($6.50) and after seeing people have similar problems, I'm guessing that it's pretty common for the webcam to stop working. I would suggest skipping this webcam. I'll edit if the seller or manufacturer offers to replace it and the new one works properly. Until then, you might want to shoot for the $15 range when buying a webcam. In the long run it will probably be worth it.
EDIT:
I've gotten the webcam to work on a more frequent basis but it is still a big hassle. I definitely recommend getting a nicer one.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2013Purchased this for the occasional skype conversation, wanted something inexpensive as I use skype on a infrequent basis. I'm also using Rosetta stone and needed a mic for audio to integrate with the program. The camera is not half bad. For the price, I'm satisfied. You focus manually, it has a somewhat narrow field of few, but from 18-24" away from my face, the proportion to frame is appropriate.
Some reviewers described the base as a clip - I envisioned being able to clip this to the top of my monitor. It's not, it's a square base that's tremendously unsteady due the unwieldy cable. Again, for the price, not a deal breaker, I placed a corner of a picture frame on the near side of the cable that attaches to the camera to stabilize and hold it in place and it worked. But just know that it's not an intuitive clip that will work for holding the camera onto the monitor.
Finally, the mic doesn't work. YES YES I know, USB cable for camera, 1/8" jack to the mic input and make sure input is select and gain sensitivity turned up. I know computers and technology and have triple checked my setting and connections. I'm cheap and was stoked for the idea of a cheap camera/mic combo that would work for the occasional Skype and regular rosetta stone usage. But if the mic doesn't work, it doesn't work, and if I had purchased this from wally-world, I'd be returning it right now...even for the meager $4-5 spent...because hey, $4-5 is still $4-5 and I need a camera and mic.
I would not recommend this product due to the seemingly low quality control as many others have reported the mic not working.
