The product ID & serial number for the Aquagate under review is:
USB 2.0.7 Model USB-PWHB SN 21929B090101899
The Plugable product ID & serial is:
USB 2.0 7 Model USB2-HUB-AG7 SN 9901002A03183
This information is found on the bottom of the case.
The review is written for both products since they only differ in two rather minor respects. They are the same form factor, contain the same pc card and use the same NEC hub chips. They have different capacity power supplies and the Plugable unit has a diode that blocks the 5 volts on the hub from being sent back to the host computer. I have found no other differences.
The hubs have hub chips that are stamped as NEC upd720113 and they register as NEC chips when they enumerate on startup. This doesn't prove they are genuine but they probably are. In any case they work very well. If they are counterfeit they are good counterfeits as of now. Things can change though. It's easy to pop the case open and take a look at the chips.
Inexpensive consumer grade utility hardware such as this is often subject to fraudulent sales in which a different product is substituted that doesn't even look like the picture. If you receive such a product you should immediately leave scathing negative comments about the seller and file for a refund with Amazon. I received an Arkview Aquagate from a seller who was claiming to be sending me a Plugable USB 7 port unit. The Arkview power supply is 2 amperes vs: 3 for the Plugable. This means that the Arkview can provide full power to 4 devices such as bus powered hard drives that each use their full quota of .5 amperes. The Plugable can power up to 6 devices. If your power requirements are met by the 2 amp supply you can use the Arkview and save a few bucks. If you need more power later it's easy enough to substitute a higher amperage power supply.
USB 2 hub chips are complicated processors, unlike the USB 1.1 hub chips that preceded them. One relatively unknown fact is that once the hub has been attached and has negotiated a high speed connection then the speed is fixed at that rate. In order to allow compatability with older USB full speed devices (and most audio devices use full speed), the hub has to create a full speed connection to the device and then use what are called "split transactions" to talk back to the host processor. The split transactions occur at high speed and this allows many full speed and low speed devices to be connected without significantly slowing down high speed transfers with such things as a hard disk.
This service is provided by a hunk of silicon logic called a Transaction Translator (TT) and there is usually one for each four port hub chip. If more than one USB full speed or low speed device is connected to one hub then the Translator will have to service both devices, one at a time. If the best performance is required for multiple full speed devices it is important to have each connected to its own USB 2.0 hub so it can have a dedicated Transaction Translator.
If you need best response for multiple audio devices on these hubs, you should not attach to adjacent port connectors since you will most likely be attaching both devices to one hub chip which will then use its TT for both devices. Attach as far apart on the hub as you can and you should be OK. To be sure it's best to dedicate a 4 port 2.0 hub to each audio device.
The benefit of having NEC (now Renesas) chips is that they are well designed and can hold a connection without erratic disconnects. USB high speed sends 480 million relatively small signals per second through a cheap set of wires. If anything disrupts this flow the host processor will reset the hub (and all devices on it), reenumerate and then reconnect everything. This can take several seconds and cause all sorts of trouble if high speed disk transfers are taking place. Cheap hubs generally have generic chips that I have found problematic.
I connect to my hubs with an inexpensive 4 port mechanical USB switch that allows me to switch among any of four computers. I have no trouble using the switch with these hubs. When I use the switch with cheap noname hubs I get spontaneous disconnects and very unreliable operation. A mechanical switch degrades the signal when it is routed to the pc card traces and then back out to another connector. For this setup the best possible quality hub chip is required.
Test ALL the ports when your first receive your unit. I found a couple of dead ports on one of mine and returned it for replacement. Test each port with a keyboard or mouse and then with a high speed device that draws full power - such as a portable hard disk. Look at the power supply label and make sure it is what you expect (2 amps or 3.5 amps depending on model).
At time of review the Arkview is sold by 770iPhone with Amazon free shipping (prime) for $14. The Plugable is being sold by Plugable for $20. As stated above, the primary difference is a smaller power supply on the Arkview. This normally shouldn't matter since most don't attempt to run more than 4 full power devices from one hub at a time.
I have no strong preferences on the form factor. There are situations where having all the device ports on the front and the host port and power connection on the back can be more convenient. But I also like having two vertical ports and a mix of horizontal ports, front and back. It's a wash to me.
In conclusion, I find the Arkview Aquagate hub to be very good buy at $14 given that it's well made with good quality parts. If you intend to use USB with any kind of mechanical switch arrangement between/among host computers I recommend either of these hubs without qualification. Plugable has a great return policy and you may find that worth the extra few dollars. If you test your unit on arrival and have purchased it via Amazon free shipping you can return either unit with 30 days if defective.
After some googling, I found several indications that this Pluggable hub is quality enough to use with the Raspberry Pi. Pluggable has shown considerable attention to the needs of it's customers, specifically including the Raspberry community, and offered assurances about the performance of the product that other manufacturers can't and don't make. I just received my Pluggable Hub today and so far I am very impressed. I've populated all the ports with various devices, including the Pi itself for power. I've seen no indication of any devices failing and the Pi hasn't crashed so far. The following is what I have connected and running at the moment. Not all of the devices are under heavy use simultaneously at present, but I've tested each device and it all works.
INITIAL LOAD TEST:
USB-IN = The Raspberry Pi (to use the hubs ports with the Pi)
Port 1 = The Raspberry Pi (to power the Pi)
Port 2 = Logitech Wireless RF module (for keyboard and mouse)
Port 3 = Realtec Wi-Fi adapter
Port 4 = Simpletech 40GB Hard Drive (powered by USB, not DC adapter)
Port 5 = Logitech Rumblepad 2 (vibration/force feedback enabled and functional)
Port 6 = DVB-T USB HDTV Receiver
Port 7 = WD External 320GB Hard Drive (powered by DC adapter)
Since this is all working, I'm going to eventually try removing the DC adapter from the second hard drive and plug in a second force feedback gamepad just to see if I can manage to crash anything. I'm fairly optimistic even that won't push it too far. I would really need to make sure every device is actively being used at the same time..and all the rumblepads rumbling...maybe I can crash it...maybe...
NO BACKPOWER:
These hubs don't leak power back through their mini USB input connector to your PC or device. This is important if you use it as a hub for your Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, or other development board and you only want power to board when the power cable is connected.
GROUND LOOP FREE PI AUDIO:
The Raspberry Pi people might like to hear is that using this hub will clean up the background noise in your analog audio entirely. Before adding this hub my audio was full of interesting buzzing, humming, whirring, clicking, etc. I had the Pi connected to a power strip more than once, using a power adapter for the Pi as well as one for the hub, resulting in a ground loop. This acted like an antenna, picking up whatever RF noise the Pi and other devices produced. I could hear the mouse move, the mouse wheel spin, and hear the Pi itself as it used the CPU and SD card..all on top of a steady low humming sound. Now that the Pi is connected with the Pluggable Hub, the audio is crystal clear. When I first put on the headphones to check, I thought my audio had stopped working somehow because I didn't hear any noise at all. I had to play a wav file to make sure the audio was working and turned up. I thought that the HDMI connection would still cause a ground loop via the monitors power cord, but fortunately that doesn't seem to be a problem.
MODERATE LIGHTS:
They indicate when the hub has power (red) and which ports are connected to devices (blue). They aren't overly bright and they don't flash. The one user image of this product with the LEDs illuminated might lead you to believe they are overly bright, but they aren't.
NO LOOSE CABLES:
You're reading this, so you've probably also read other reviews mentioning a loose USB-IN or DC adapter connection being problematic. This applies to older flawed models, and the problem has been corrected. The power cable fits in flush and tight with the hub, as does the mini USB-IN. The cables are heavy gauge and of reasonable length.
WIGGLE ROOM:
I wasn't too excited about the physical layout of this hub, I wanted a hub with all the ports facing the same direction so it would take up less desk space and have prettier cable management. That being said, all of the ports on this have ample space between them to fit those oddball bulky USB devices like fatty USB flash drives or big giant WiFi dongles with a ridiculous antenna screwed to it. The fact that ports are on the top, left, and right sides means the hub sits stable and flat on a surface even with heavier devices attached. It would sit really nicely on top of a PC tower and allow wires to hang down the sides.
ITS SHINEY:
First thing i did was get fingerprints all over it. I would prefer a matte black non-shiney surface that doesn't require delicate polishing after being handled...but this is just being petty now.
CONS:
The little rubber sticky feet are small and not very good at being sticky. Several times now I've noticed them missing, only to find one on the floor, or stuck to something else. Plugable should provide better rubber feet that actually work.
UPDATE: I now own 3 of these! While the shape, layout, and rubber feet could be a little better...the performance and overall quality can't get much better.

Easily detected in Arch ARM OS running on R Pi 2. Will update later of any other intricacies ...
( note : R Pi 2 is being powered separately and not from HUB )
This one simply works. It is well-designed, unobtrusive and has handy indicator lights. It is immediately recognized along with the peripherals by my Windows 7 Thinkpad as well as by my older and slower Windows XP Thinkpad.
And finally, the people at Plugable seem incredibly nice and responsive to their customers. I have only dealt with them concerning questions of availability for Canada - not due to any product problems. With my experiences with their products and their people, I would always choose a Plugable product.
I have no relationship with Plugable or their employees, apart from being a very satisfied customer. And for those who have strong views on paperclips, please accept my apologies - no disrespect was intended. I myself am a Swingline staple and stapler fan myself.
