- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI wasn't anywhere near New York on 9/11. I was on the opposite side of the country. But I was deeply impacted by the events of that day, by what I saw on television and by the millions of stories heard around the world. I was just a kid then. Before. After, I became a different person. That day changed me in so many ways.
I have always wondered what it was like inside those buildings before they fell. Did those people know what was happening? Did they know they were going to die? Or was it merciful and instant for them? I've always wondered if I would have made it out alive, or if I would have curled up in a ball and given up.
I always wondered why more people didn't get up from their desks and make their way to safety.
I always wondered how so many police and firefighters - people who were supposed to be our knights in shining armor - somehow died. That wasn't supposed to happen. They were suppose to run in there and save everybody, right? Right?
But now I have the answers to all those questions. Now I know why.
Reading this short, so close to the 10th anniversary, was something I needed to do. For every year, I get unsettled and a bit morose...dreading the pictures of the ailing buildings that appear back on our TV screens.
I thought I'd get some closure, honestly, with knowing more details. But, I can't say it helps to actually know more. I don't think anything will ever make sense about that horrible, horrible day.
But if one woman's terror can be turned around for such good - then that Bible verse "All things work together for good..." really rings true. I happen to agree with Ms. Haskin's religious beliefs, and somewhere, somehow I take comfort in knowing that despite all of the horrible that goes on around us - God really is in control.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2011Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMs. Haskin begins this story by stating that she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is a psychiatric disorder that can come about after one has experienced or witnessed life-threatening events like war, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, or violent personal assaults.
The author provides a vivid and emotional account of her experiences after the plane hit Tower One at the World Trade Center. She explains that she was frozen with fear and could not understand what was happening. She was one of the last ones to leave her office area because she could not grasp the gravity of the situation.
She then entered the stairway and descended thirty-six floors. She describes how crowded it was as they went down the stairs. She was disoriented and was just pushed along as the crowd slowly made there way to the bottom floor.
She tells how more people were entering the stairway from each floor. On one floor, the door was opened and she could see a man who was decapitated. People were yelling, cussing and crying in desperation as they made their way to freedom. She tells of the putrid smoke that was burning her eyes and making breathing difficult. When she finally exited the building, she saw many people jumping from the upper floors.
The author sought guidance and strength from her Christian faith. The text contains Scripture that complements the text. She is truly convinced that the Lord was with her and led her to safety on that horrific day.
Leslie Haskin has provided a very detailed description of her experiences on 9/11. She is very good at expressing her emotions and providing details that some authors might overlook. I think one of the most poignant moments of her experience was when she witnessed a man and woman holding hands and jumping from a window to their deaths.
Some people will object to the author's frequent references to the Bible. I think the verses that she chose to highlight her experiences were very appropriate. She is a woman of faith and she gladly gives all the glory to Jesus Christ.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2013Format: KindleVerified PurchaseIt was an interesting read but a little like being inside her head, which was disconcerting and a bit confusing at times, but that actually may have been the point. She waxed poetic and philosophical at the oddest times in the narrative, but that's probably the disjointed kind of thinking that she was actually experiencing at the time. I know others may have been put off by her constant biblical references, but I got it. People of faith are never separated from it. It's as much a part of your daily life as your backyard or your children, and you talk about it as part of your normal, everyday existence, as you would talk about your car payments or child's report card. It's fundamental to the day-to-day life you live, not just something you do on the Sabbath.
Still, it was a little hard to cut through all that to get to the real story. Strictly from a literary standpoint, I think the story would've been much more cohesive and flowed more seamlessly without the constant interruption of biblical references, making it a much easier read. But as I said, a person of faith can't separate themselves from it. It's who she is, and I respect her for staying faithful to her convictions. She sees the whole world through the lens of her faith and it colors her perception of everything that happens to her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is an intelligent book, movingly written, with well chosen and entirely apt Biblical quotations which genuinely add to the text. There is a real appreciation of the countryside north of NY City and the Catskills. There are very few purple passages. Descriptions of the day, her slow and paintul exit from the thirty-sixth floor of Tower One, her witness to the collapses and the ordeal of returning home on the train, with all its difficulties and strangeness, are written up in detail. I cannot think of a greater challenge than writing up such a memory. Leslie Haskin writes with sensitivity and with the business-like skill which characterizes the people who were privileged to work in WTC.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating read!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI feel that this book is well written and gives a very detailed discription of what happened on Sept 11th. It grabbed my attention from start to finish. Yes it is written by a person who is very religious but I felt that this gave incite into her character and approach and did not put me off even though I'm not very religious. This is definitely worth a read considering its a free book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One person's true account
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a timely reminder of the real horror that was 9/11 told from one survivors view. The dreadful things we saw on T.V. that day were nowhere near as the horrific sights that this survivor witnessed inside the building. There are a lot of Biblical quotes but as the writer is now a Christian minister this is understandable, & I'm sure many of no religion at all prayed in some way that day. It also shows what real P.T.S.D. is & not just a label to be flung around as so often happens. Remarkable, unforgettable & uncomfortable but a definite must read.

3.0 out of 5 stars One woman's account
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI thought this was an ok read actually. I see other reviews that dont like it, but I found it to be informative and I hope it helped the author to write it all down. I found it insightful, and I would recommend it to others. I did skip over the religious elements. I felt the author's pain in this novel

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetic
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis book goes beyond the horrible events of 9/11 and delves into the soul of it. Better than any other account I have read, it conveys the inner, world-shaking feeling of that day, which we all felt, to some degree, that there were no more safe places and we were entering another era. Leslie has the rare gift of seeing into the heart and the rarer gift of raw honesty. If you read one account, let it be this one.
