[Confession: After using this unusual stapler for a couple of hours, it appeared to loosen up and began to perform like a conventional, effective, but ordinary stapler. I still maintain that the indented base of the stapler is the most logical resting place for the palm of the hand, though using it in that position does require relearning how to use a stapler "backwards." But based on my extended experience, the stapler will perform, eventually, like a regular stapler, allowing the user to place the curved base of the unit onto a desk where it can indeed be "punched down upon." Still, such usage seems a shame for a Handheld Stapler that, besides the features mentioned below, is covered with a soft, cushiony, especially hand-friendly cover. (I still plan to use this particular stapler as described below. It's a little like the right-handed pianist who ties that hand behind his back in order to develop better left-hand technique.)]

[Original Review:] I couldn't find my bright red Swingline stapler and needed a replacement (a surefire way of resurrecting the lost one). My only requirements were that it be cheap and "loudly" colored (but not red, which I already had--somewhere). This pink Swingline seemed to fit the bill, especially since Amazon was offering a coupon discount (no strings, no extra purchase required) in addition to the already deeply discounted price.

Reading the customer reviews clinched the deal. I've never seen a product (at least, a non-electronic one) so decisively maligned by one reviewer after another (admittedly, a reason I gave this stapler 5 stars). The challenge of making this thing work like a stapler was simply irresistible.

What I discovered initially is that previous reviewers were mostly right about this particular stapler's ineffectiveness. The stapler is puzzling, perverse, precarious, impractical--and completely counter-intuitive. All of the problems other users have observed played out for me and no doubt will occur if you use this like a "normal" stapler. The secret to using it effectively is to take notice of the indented curvature in one half of the stapler. That's where your palm goes. And therein lies the problem: the palm must be placed on the base, or bottom, of the stapler rather than the top side.

Whether Swingline designers botched the job or are simply being devilishly playful with customers is hard to say. But once you've figured out where your palm goes, the next step is to either: 1. get used to seeing the back side of each staple (the 2 closing pieces) appearing on the front of each stapled stack; or 2. come at each stack of paper from "behind" rather than in front (or on top) of the stack. (I recommend the second approach).

Much of the satisfaction of stapling comes from "punching down" on the stack. But in this instance, you must get used to "squeezing up." Admittedly, it's a complete mind-shift, but not all that difficult. And from my very first "squeeze," the stapler performed like a champ, producing tightly stapled (no "open" staples) stacks from 2 to 12 pp. with little effort.

Maybe the problem is that this singular stapler simply is not made for time-deprived, busy adults, who are likely to be habit-driven when it comes to staplers. I'm going to try this pink deceiver on three grand-daughters, each of whom is in, or close enough to, the age of appreciating "Barbie" to put my theory to the test. (I promise to watch closely, given the hazards others have noted.)

I love the idea of having a pink stapler and, as a teacher, I had hoped it would stand up to at least one year of use. Unfortunately, it didn't make it past one day of use. I'm unsure if I got a bad stapler or if this is how they all are. The only staplers I use are Swingline brand, so I know the brand is very reliable. This model is not. The staples wouldn't close around the paper. So basically I had papers stapled by a staple that wasn't fully wrapped around the paper. It was in the paper, but not closed. It's hard to describe what I'm actually talking about, but I couldn't risk using this staplers with students. I didn't want them getting hurt by the edges that were poking out. I had such high hopes for my cute little pink stapler, but I guess my hopes were a bit too high.

I am disappointed with this stapler, especially since it's a swingline, a brand that I would expect high quality from. I've owned this stapler 3 months, and I do not recommend it. Although it wasn't very expensive, I have had better luck with cheapy staplers than this model. I often have to try multiple times to staple papers together before it's successful. After multiple attempts, the paper looks unprofessional with holes and staple marks at the top. I purchased the correct staples that are recommended (S.F. 4) and have never stapled over the recommended 20 sheets of paper, but for some reason this product does not work well.

I bought this because I am starting school again and needed something to put together my syllabus. Max sheets I have tried it on is 13 sheets of paper. This usually takes 4-8 tries. I am not sure if this is because of the pink breast cancer awareness staples I bought or if it's the actual stapler. So for now I give it 3 stars until I get new staples.

I really like this stapler, with caveats. It fits the hand well, is comfortable to use, and doesn't weigh down my briefcase.

On the downside, it's pretty cheaply made. The advertised 20 sheet capacity is not going to happen. I never staple more than 2 or 3 pages so this isn't an issue. I do have doubts about the long-term survival of the stapler, but I'll probably lose it before it breaks.

Life is about tradeoffs. I like this stapler, it was cheap, and it's good enough. If you want a heavy-duty stapler, it will cost twice as much and weigh twice as much. Just decide what you want

Okay, I wanted to buy the red stapler, but I KNOW it would get stolen off of my desk. That being said, very few people would steal my pink one since I work with mostly men (I'm a military cop with a temporary desk job).
I have no issues with this stapler, but I rarely need to staple more than 5 pages together. It is comfortable in my hand and staples easily. I have had zero issue with my staples not folding properly, so I have no complaints.
On the plus side, not product review here: Amazon got it back in stock earlier than they expected and I got it delivered 2-3 weeks before it was estimated to arrive as a result, so don't fear the wait period too much if she's out of stock!
All in all, a great stapler; soft, pretty and so far--reliable.

I bought this stapler because it was pink. I have never owned a stapler that wouldn't stapler papers but now I do! It will not close the staple on the paper. It just pops out the staple and pops it through the paper without closing the ends of the staple. How does it malfunction like this? I have NEVER seen a stapler do this. I didn't test the stapler before filling it with staples and putting it on the desk. My son used it and said it didn't work. I didn't believe him until I tried to use it! Too bad it was after a month or so. Too late to return it!! It might hold 20 sheets together if the 20 sheets are as thick as the staple and you don't expect the staple to close all the way. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY LIKE I DID!!
