The Glacier Stainless mess kit combines the gourmet performance you want with the light weight you need, making it a favorite of hikers and backpackers. The mess kit starts with a 1-quart cooking pot and a 7.5-inch frypan that doubles as a lid for the pot.

The kit's 7.5-inch frypan doubles as a lid for the 1-quart pot. Both cookware items are made of high-grade, 18/8 stainless steel, with a non-reactive surface that's the perfect complement to cooking with butter, olive oil, or bacon. The stainless pots distribute heat evenly and consistently, and can go from stove to fire to oven while always delivering a perfect sear. With a brilliant, rustproof finish and the strength that only steel can provide, Glacier Stainless is the material of choice for cooking over coals or campfires.

The Glacier Stainless mess kit also includes a 6-inch polypropylene bowl and a 12-ounce polypropylene cup. And to make it easier to lift your cookware, the kit comes with an exclusive DiamondBack Gripper handle that attaches securely to exterior brackets on the pot and frypan. The brackets preserve both the interior and exterior pot finishes while still letting you detach the handle for easy storage.

All the items in the Glacier Stainless mess kit nest together and fit inside the included mesh storage bag. The items pack small, travel light, and withstand a ton of abuse.

I got on Amazon looking for a basic, fairly well put together non-aluminum mess kit that wouldn't kill my budget as a college student. This set is pretty much everything I wanted.

Its stainless, the price is right, and the quality of the set is a huge improvement over my old aluminum set that got wrecked a while back.

The one thing I wish it would have is the ability to just clamp everything tightly together by default, but a large rubber band took care of that.

    Update (2/27/13)

So far so good, I use this kit a lot and am still very happy with it.

The only potential issue with this mess kit is the handle. As one other person pointed out, it's made of a pretty soft metal, and if it bends it'll drop the pans. I've found that this only happens if you leave the handle on the pot/pan (when hot) for extended periods of time, making the metal bend much more easily. I just keep it off as much as possible when cooking, and haven't had any real problems yet.

    Update (12/15/2013)

This thing has been under some pretty heavy use (almost daily). One thing I've noticed is that the rivets holding the tab that the handle fits into are pitting pretty heavily, and they appear to be made out of aluminum. Really not sure what most people can do about that outside of avoiding putting overly acidic things inside. I dealt with it by welding another strip of (way thicker) SS to it just to see how long I can keep this thing alive, but I don't think most people have that option.

    Update (7/15/2015)

Still going. The metal is actually wearing thin, but I've had the kit for a while and it's been taking a lot of abuse. The handle has definitely seen better days and I'm considering getting a different gripper made out of something a little more durable. Still, very happy with it and I'll probably buy another set when this one finally goes out.

    Update (10/11/2018)

Ended up burning a hole into the bottom of the big pan. Had to replace the gripper a while back too. Took it all over the pacific without issue.

Nothing lasts forever, but I'd say I got my money's worth.

Why would you put a heat ring on a frying pan? It's a frying pan. Even if it heats a little unevenly, I'd prefer that to having these wonderful corners where my spatula can't reach. Seriously, wtf GSI? And I love that their product pictures cleverly hide the fact. And oddly enough, they must have changed the model TO INCLUDE the ring, since I specifically looked up the one available product review video in order to check and in that there was no heat ring. WTF GSI.

With the exception of the handle, this kit has excellent build quality. The two metal pan/plates are excellent, solid, and beautiful. The plastic bowl and cup are fine, but disappointing in their plasticy plasticness. I wish they were also stainless steel. I understood before purchasing the kit that the bowl and cup were not metal, but once you see the pan and plate, you wish that the bowl and cup followed in their awesome metallic splendor.

The handle is the worst part of this mess kit as it is made of soft metal. Without you being able to see and examine the handle up close it is difficult for me to explain exactly why the handle stinks. But I shall try. The solid purchase of the handle depends COMPLETELY upon a small metal tab that attaches to the metal pan. This metal tab can bend easily. In fact, it bends even when using the handle normally. Once the tab bends past a certain angle the handle slips away from the pan like a wet bar of soap in the shower.

One can temporarily "fix" the handle by smashing the metal tab back into place, but it will only bend out again with normal usage. This is such a serious flaw that the metal pans in this mess kit may end up completely unusable for cooking for lack of a handle. It should be noted that the metal pans, while awesome, conduct heat extremely well. It is virtually impossible to hold one bare-handed when a scoop or two of piping hot beef stew is introduced.

The second flaw of this kit is the lack of stacking or packing engineering when everything is put together. The plastic bits and the handle just flop awkwardly between the nicely nested metal pans when everything is packed up. The geometry of the plastic parts could have been engineered to maximize internal space for other things like utensils and such. As it is, you may find it very difficult to add anything else to the inside of this kit before packing it away. This is disappointing, and it appears to demonstrate a lack of space management foresight.

Summary: The two pans are awesome. Plastic parts are fine, but generic. Handle stinks and may render your pans rather worthless. Tough to fit anything else inside when packed up.

I would say the other reviews that point out issues with the handle and the fit of the bowl & cup inside the metal pieces is pretty spot on. The two metal pans work just fine for me so I gave it 3 stars since they are the two most important pieces, but all of the complaints are valid. The handle bends when using and has to be bent back. I assume one day it will just snap off, but hasn't yet. One way around the handle issue is to flip it upside down and use it as more of a hook as long as what's inside is not too heavy, or if you don't leave it near the heat too long. I don't really use the plastic cup & bowl as they are only so/so which leaves me room inside for utensils and a pot holder or bandana that I can use if the handle ever becomes completely unusable. But... you can buy an old pan from goodwill for less than 5 bucks, cut the handle off and still accomplish basically the same thing that this does when considering it's flaws. The cheapo pan with no handle is even better if your throw a pair of small channellock pliers in with it, which has way more uses than the handle. So, I can't really say it is the best option but it has served me pretty well so far despite it's problems.
