- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2011While this was interesting it really was nothing more than what you might find in a magazine article. How many of you want to pay $3.99 to read a magazine article. I was very disappointed and I'll never down load another one of these "A Brief History"

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2011This is not really a chronological history nor is it particularly useful for tourists. But it is a short collection of interesting, if unconnected, episodes from the city's biography. The collection starts with an a-propos-of-nothing story from the Revolutionary War and then moves quickly through the impact of immigration, the war of words over the birthplace of hip-hop, the development of Broadway, the history of the Times and WSJ, the little-celebrated Cleopatra's Needle obelisk, the 9/11 attacks, and ends on a high note with the story of the High Line park project.
As a non-New Yorker, I enjoyed the glimpses of culture and history in this quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2012This book is okay. It is an informational type book but nothing exciting. I would give this book away. I expected something with more history of New York city but was disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars One Star
Pretty basic....not readable at all.

2.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time
This book spends more time talking about Cleopatra's Needle than POC New Yorkers. The things the author chooses to prioritise documenting are bewildering.
