For the price, this package delivers. It's small, easy to use. Comes with built in 2gb memory which gives you about 45 min recording time, ad an sd card to extend the memory. This is in infrared, so day time video will look a little "pink" but for night time shoots it works great. Has about a 2/3ft range (outside in the dark) with it's built in IR light. Indoors it works much better. Use an external IR light source and it works great. Only draw back is there is no camera mount, so you can't attach an external light source or attach it to a stand. With some creative thinking though, it can be done. Also, any fast movements are a blur but a slow steady hand will get great results. I'm quite pleased with it and will probably grab a couple more. Definatly worth the money. Lightning fast delivery to boot.

    Pros:
Prompt shipping and delivery, records video in the dark, easy to use, prompt support from Vivitar.

    Cons:
Video is grainy, takes a long time for the computer to recognize unit when plugged into USB port, no tripod mount.

Recommendation: Purchase additional infrared light source.

This unit does record in complete darkness with the use of the automatic built-in infrared led's. Being grainy, the quality of the picture is mediocre. In the dark the camera records in gray scale; this is normal because the infrared detector is not sensitive to color visible to the human eye.

While the built-in infrared led's work, they really are not powerful enough to illuminate a room. I purchased a Sima, 36 IR led, night light and the results are excellent. The picture is still grainy but much better than without the additional light. At about $30/unit, the light is a worthwhile addition. It is possible to attach several Sima units together.

In daylight the video recorder turns off the IR led's and then it works like a normal color video camera. The colors are off because without the usual built-in IR blocking hot mirror filter, (normally found in all digital videos and cameras) the recording will have a pinkish tinge to it. It is possible to correct for this bias by placing an external hot mirror filter in front of the lens. Although expensive, these filters are sometimes available at low prices from e-bay. In retrospect, I do not recommend using this recorder in daylight even with a hot mirror because the results will not be as good as a regular video camera. This is a night camera, so use it just for that.

Vivitar should be criticized for not providing a built-in tripod mount. It is not difficult to rig up a substitute, but why not do it right?

The other major criticism I have is the time it takes for my computer to recognize the Vivitar unit when it is plugged into the USB port to download files. In comparison, my computer recognizes the Flip unit I also have almost immediately. With WindowsXP, 1 gb RAM, and unlimited disc space, it takes several minutes for the Vivitar unit to come up in my file directory. There is no message that anything is going on except for an occasional flashing light on the back of the camera. The first time I plugged it in, it took so long for anything to happen that I thought something was wrong. Fortunately, I waited several minutes and the logo finally appeared in the directory. Very, very slow; so, be patient. The Flip is far faster but the Flip cannot record in the dark. So, hang in there if you want night vision!

I since contacted Vivitar regarding this problem and they promptly replied to try a different USB port. This experiment did not work either, but when I tried plugging in the unit in the USB ports of two other computer--WindowsXP and Windows7--the Vivitar logo showed up in Windows Explorer almost immediately. Conclusion is that I have a problem with the one computer, but it is something to be aware of when you receive your own unit.

I first downgraded the unit to 4 stars because of the grainy picture quality, then I further downgraded it to 3 stars for the lack of a tripod mount. For the price, this unit does an adequate job.

Don't expect this camera to perform like military grade heat sensitive video equipment. It is similar to a simple low-res video camera. It does, however have IR LEDs built in, and that is quite handy. This camera is poor at best when trying to video a large area of darkness. It is grainy, and the lights don't penetrate very far. What this camera is perfect for is close quarters. The still camera is decent and the video is good enough for investigating, as long as the subject of focus is within 6 or 7 feet. A good way to improve the picture quality is to saturate the room with IR light using auxiliary IR lighting. The camera is the same size as a cell phone and is pretty well put together. It burns through the 4 AAA batteries pretty quick, so rechargeable batteries might be the next item in your cart. It hooks directly into the USB port of your computer, and the videos are a standard format, no need to download the proprietary software that is included.
This camera is a good tool to ADD to any paranormal investigator's tool kit, not a be-all, end-all ghost hunting camera. It is money better spent for small observations than purchasing another Sony night shot.

I bought this product to use for my paranormal investigation team until we can purchase a full IR camcorder set-up. So far we have used this on one investigation with amazing results!! My team and I were so pleased with how this product performed that we plan to purchase a couple more to use on future investigations too. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a basic IR camcorder for paranormal investigations or ghost hunts.
