Product Description
He’s obsessive. He’s compulsive. He’s Monk, “TV’s most original sleuth ever” (Howard Rosenberg, Los Angeles Times).
Primetime Emmy® and Golden Globe® winner Tony Shalhoub cleans up crime and grime galore in the beloved series that critics hailed as “fresh, exciting and utterly original” (Chicago Tribune).
Once upon a time Adrian Monk was a rising star with the San Francisco Police Department, but he lost his nerve, his mind and then his badge. Now, this obsessive-compulsive detective is determined to get back on the force by solving one crime at a time in “the best detective show to come along in decades” (New York Post).
Featuring hilarious guest stars, including Stanley Tucci, John Turturro and Sarah Silverman, and packed with every episode from all 8 seasons, this 32-disc set includes hours of behind-the-scenes bonus features along with the collectible 32-page Defective Detective Handbook, making Monk: The Complete Series a compulsively essential addition to any DVD obsessive’s collection.

Season One
The ranks of fictional genius gumshoes were joined by former San Francisco detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) in the summer of 2002, and he is indeed a welcome addition. Cable channel USA Network introduced Monk, a bright comedy-drama series about an obsessive-compulsive sleuth drummed out of police work following the murder of his wife and a subsequent spike in his overwhelming neuroses. Once a rising star in the homicide department, the twitchy savant is still valuable to Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), who reluctantly calls on Monk to solve difficult, high-profile murders of judges, billionaires, police informants, and famous attorneys. Monk's talent for finding clues and seeing the big picture in criminal investigations makes him a force to reckon with, but his many phobias (germs, heights, asymmetry, and much, much else) aggravate Stottlemeyer and make Monk completely dependent on a long-suffering assistant, Sharona (Bitty Schram), a single mom who functions as Dr. Watson to Monk's Sherlock Holmes. Each of the 12 episodes included in Monk: The Complete First Season is a delightful mix of clever whodunit puzzler, neurotic schtick, and deepening relationships. Among the latter, the bond between Monk and Sharona is most touching, as the platonic friends, sometimes aghast at how involved they are in each other's lives, surprise themselves with the breadth of their trust and commitment. In "Mr. Monk Goes to the Asylum," Monk is forced into a stay at a mental hospital, where a murderer has convinced him he's crazy; it's Sharona who makes her boss realize he's not. In "Mr. Monk and the Earthquake," it's Monk who rushes to Sharona's aid when he deduces that a lying friend is about to kill her. In almost every episode, Monk is confronted with a phobic limitation he must overcome in order to save the day. The question is whether he will heal enough, one day, to re-join his old squad. For the sake of Monk's winning formula and fans, one has to hope such good news never comes to pass. --Tom Keogh
Season Two
Monk: Season Two finds the popular cable dramedy all the more satisfying and fun in its second year. Relationships between the series' core characters have (against all odds) actually deepened and sweetened, while the new whodunit storylines challenge obsessive-compulsive investigator hero Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) in fresh and novel ways. There are no big changes, but there is more compassion, even friendship, exchanged between Monk and his former boss, Captain Leland Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), and grudging admiration for the difficult private sleuth from Stottlemeyer's second-in-command, Lieutenant Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford). As for Monk's crucial bond with his long-suffering assistant, Sharona (Bitty Schram), well, nothing comes easier than before. On the other hand, Sharona continues to draw Monk out of his self-obsession by giving him someone to care about.
Highlights include the strong season opener, "Mr. Monk Goes Back to School," starring Andrew McCarthy as a science teacher whom Monk instantly suspects of killing a colleague. (The latter's death was disguised as a suicide.) Monk's investigation leads him to take, with many pitfalls and funny moments, a post at the school as a substitute teacher. But the episode also demonstrates the series' increasing preference for mysteries that concern how a crime was committed rather than who did it. Also good is "Mr. Monk Goes to Mexico," in which Monk finds himself in a panic without bottled water while working alongside two south-of-the-border equivalents (in looks and personality) of Stottlemeyer and Disher. "Mr. Monk Meets the Playboy" stars Gary Cole as a girlie-mag publisher who blackmails the chivalrous Monk by acquiring, and threatening to print, old topless photos of Sharona. One of the season's best shows, "Mr. Monk and the Paperboy," finds the fastidious, orderly detective in a major freakout when his own home becomes a crime scene. Still a comic joy and still stimulating for mystery buffs, Monk: Season Two is highly recommended. Among appealing guest stars are Rachel Dratch, Glenne Headley, Tim Curry, and John Turturro as Monk's Mycroft-like brother. --Tom Keogh

If you like wacky comedies like Psych, you will like this show (the Psych pilot episode is on this DVD set). Monk is one of the most interesting and likable characters ever. The phrases he uses when speaking to people is hilarious. The other characters fit together so well. I was so sad when this show ended after eight seasons, but that is a pretty good run.
I wish this were cleaned up a bit and on Blu-ray because the quality is not too good. I suspect this show may not have even been filmed in that high of a resolution or with digital audio at any point in the series. This was the case with the first few seasons of Doctor Who, however, they later released Blu-rays and they did something to make them look much better than the DVDs. Another thing that made me suspect the show was not filmed in too high of a resolution was that there was only a single stereo audio track. The alternative is that the studio didn't put much effort into the quality of the release on disc and not bother to later release it on Blu-ray.
The show is still quite funny and enjoyable without HD or 5.1 digital audio. I did not hesitate to buy this on DVD because the price was low compared to some other series.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2011I previously had the first-four-seasons box-set, as it was my brothers. However, once he told me he was going to sell it; I looked up the last four seasons, so see price-wise, what I'd be out - if I gave my brother money for the first four, and then paid for the last four on Amazon. And, actually - it was cheaper/more cost-efficient to get the Complete Series. So much so, that my brother could've taken a hit in selling the first-four-box-set, if he wanted, and we still would've been okay, with what I spent on the Complete Series.
I'm never truly sure if people are wanting these reviews for the 'shows', themselves, or if they're wanting the review of the product, the condition, etc.
As far as the condition - I was very pleased. Just as well-made as the four-seasons, when we got that (when it first came out). It's a nice box/set, too. It's a great display piece, if nothing else. It takes up less room than the four-seasons, as well.
As far as the show. Man, it's a great show. Honestly, I'm upset that it ended (due to Tony wanting to retire from the show). I would've been okay with another eight seasons, to be honest. Even if the episodes starting getting predictable (they had not gotten predictable, cliche, or 'usual'; at all during the eight seasons).. I still would've watched another eight seasons. I love the cast - excellent arrangement, even with the VERY FEW changes ('natural changes', and not just 'get rid of this character' changes); I loved every bit of them. Their characters were well-written, and EXCELLENTLY performed/executed - it all looked just so natural. And really, their characters added diversity to the actors' list of 'character types'. It's great.
I love this show. And just love that I have all the seasons in one place (and cheaper than individual seasons).
- Reviewed in the United States on April 26, 2017I had never seen this series when it first came out. I saw a couple of reruns and loved it so I ordered the series. It is original and hilarious. Me. Monk is funny, brilliant and sad at different times. The murder mysteries are often as quirky as the main character. The cast is terrific. Tony Shaloud is great as Monk. Bitty Schram as Sharona is a lovable, loyal, sexy, and smart friend and assistant to Monk. I was sad to see her leave the series. The character was unique. She was replaced by Traylor Howard as Natalie, a widowed mom of a young pre teen girl. She is a loveable loyal assistant to Monk and like Sharona patiently keeps the distracted Monk on point. Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine) does a great job as a homicide detective and friend to Monk who learns to understand Monks genius and idiosyncrasy. The scene with Captain Shottlemeyer "interviewing" the monkey "suspect" is one of the most hilarious comedy scenes I have seen on TV. Monk's OCD symptoms bring to mind a lot of little crazy habits almost everyone has that is probably part of the shows appeal. My wife and I both feel this is the best written, most original series we have seen. It has drama, comedy, love, friendship, mystery. The subtle humor in much of the show is just a bonus. Some of the murders are rather graphic and for this reason would say many if the episodes are not for kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obsessive, Compulsive, Delightful
In terms of the content of the show. It's brilliant. For some reason it's getting really hard to get hold of Monk in the UK. Maybe it's popularity has suddenly spiked and new batches of dvds haven't been made for awhile. Please to have grabbed this for the price. It'll cost you £103.92 to stream all eight series via prime.
It's NTSC but most dvd players nowadays are region free (just make sure you have one that plays all regions).
Discs are playing well so far, working my way through them. Just finished streaming every episode from all eight season a month ago. Before netflix took it off their catalogue, Philistines! But still not bored of watching Monk.
There was some slight pressure damage on the display box in the top corner. Likely caused during transit. However, it's a minor inconvenience, considering it shipped from the US. Perhaps thicker protective packing should be used next time.
