- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2014This is a top-notch TV with superior picture quality. I got pretty much the last one before the new ones with 3D capabilities came out, but the basic TV should still be the same (I have LG 50PB6550), and I cannot stand 3D anyway.
I tried to get it straight from Adorama, but they recognized my IP address and automatically charged me shipping, although I am a VIP member. So I ordered it from Amazon (still shipped from Adorama); Amazon did not charge shipping. It was supposed to arrive after 3 weeks with normal shipping, but that was not true. It actually arrived just 6 days after BlackFriday. I had the same positive surprise with Adorama before, where my MacBook Pro came very early and therefore made it on my trip to Europe! For the TV delivery, UPS told me "at the end of the day", which turned out to mean 1:45pm!! So they delivered again the next day, and then I was fortunate enough to be able to be present in the early afternoon.
Setup was relatively easy; I did it without any help. The TV weighs 66lbs, so some may need help. It was, however, significantly lighter than my old Sony Trinitron. Philipps screwdriver standard is required. I put the TV on the couch for attaching the stand.
Once the TV is switched on, it will guide you through installation. I attached it to my DirecTV receiver via HDMI. No channels were recognized, so I went online for a chat with DirecTV. That worked immediately; I was reminded to reset the (DirecTV)receiver, which is located behind a panel. Once this was done, the TV came on without any problems.
Functionality: I will test the 600Hz refresh rate tomorrow with soccer games, but everything else is just stunning. I set all low frequencies to a low level with the TV remote, so that action movies at night will not disturb my girlfriend. I usually had to keep the sound level up in order to understand the dialog, but when music came up it was so loud that she started screaming. Hopefully this problem has been solved. Pretty much everything can be adjusted with the TV remote. I set the color space to movie, because that is still the nicest on the eyes, but manual adjustments are likely in the future. I do not have LGs magic remote, so I have to change channels and some settings with the DirecTV remote and sound and some other settings with the LG TV remote. O well, I can live with it, but maybe I will buy the magic remote.
Smart functionalities: They simply don't work together with DirecTV. I have HBO, so i really don't care, but I tried anyway. Webbrowser? Forget it. The only thing of use to me is AmazonPrime, and that app does not work at all. In fact, by playing around with the Smart options, I had to reset the TV several times. Now I think that probably was avoidable, but Smart still does not work. Or maybe it will work for anyone with a Netflix account, but again, I don't care. Fortunately I own the said MacBook Pro; connecting the TV to the laptop with a second HDMI cable takes no time; the TV recognizes the second cable, and I can simply use the TV screen as a monitor. Should be fun for large tables, but mostly it means I can play Amazon (or any other) video content (or any other app) straight on the TV. I therefore purchased a 15foot HDMI cable for 11$ at Amazon. Smart functionality in this way comes straight from the computer, but that is not why I bought the TV. I am sure pictures can be watched directly on the TV, too, via the 3 USB ports, or from the laptop connection. If I wanted any more Smart capabilities, I would buy a Roku (ca. 100$), but I have no need for it.
By pressing on the DirecTV res button (ca. 2 seconds), the resolution on the screen is changed directly. It will cycle up to 1080i, but not 1080p. However, in the DirecTV settings is is clearly visible that the TV supports 1080p. So it is DirecTV that cheats. I don't know about cable and what they do resolution-wise, but they will not see me again, if I can avoid it.
So to summarize: The Plasma TV fulfills all what I wanted, and more. It is relatively easy to set up, and it has just stunning picture quality. It is necessary to play with the sound and color settings (in my opinion), and the connection to other devices functions without any problems. It sucks as a Smart TV (at least for AmazonPrime), but that's not why I got it, and the problem can be solved via a laptop or a Roku (or maybe it works for Netflix).
Overall, I am so glad to have gotten the TV. The girlfriend is currently watching and has forgiven me for past mistakes. She also loves a 50inch Plasma TV.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2014The TV is quite good especially for the price. Picture quality is solid. And I didn't have to tweak too much with the settings. There are built-in settings that can be selected and they're good. The energy friendly settings are not good in that the picture is too dim, so stay away from that one. For regular TV watching, I found the standard setting to be just fine. The apps such as for Amazon Prime, Netflix, YouTube and Pandora work well. The TV sound is good too - I thought I might need a sound bar but I don't think I need one for this TV.
My biggest complaint was with Amazon customer service. The TV was guaranteed for delivery on a specific Friday morning. Amazon guaranteed it and I received a confirmation by email. I took that Friday morning off from work. No delivery was made. The TV was not even scheduled to be delivered on that morning according to the carrier who was delivering the TV. The carrier said they could deliver on the following day. I was livid.
I called Amazon customer service and complained. Failure to received a package that was guaranteed for delivery! What made it worse was that I took the morning off of work and thus lost a morning's worth of pay. All Amazon could offer me was a gift card and first thing Saturday morning delivery. This was after going through two rounds of phone calls with Amazon, and the first round with the actual carrier. All of them told me the same thing: Saturday delivery. I wanted restitution. So, instead of going out on Saturday morning, I had to sit around and wait for my TV to be delivered. In effect, I was inconvenienced twice by Amazon. What good is guaranteed delivery when Amazon couldn't follow through. Amazon failed in its guarantee - it was just an empty promise which resulted in one pissed customer.

I see someone from LG may have read my scathing review of this product and FINALLY included the contrast ratio for this product!!!
At a ration of 3,000:1 there is no wonder why they hid this information, which they still have not posted on the LG product site. This speaks volumes for LG as a company.
To give you an idea of how incredibly bad a 3,000:1 ratio is, check out an LG 60" plasma from 2013 (prior to the new energy saving display) which is similarly priced.
Now check out any plasma TV out there that doesn't have LG's special background brightness control, and you'll see that a contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1 is more the norm than something with a contrast ratio that's a factor of 1,000 inferior! I imagine many less than $60 portable DVD players have a better image!
The technical stats on the LG 60PN5700 60-Inch Class 1080P 600Hz Plasma TV with Smart TV (2013 Model) according to the Amazon page, show this model to be 3,000,000:1!
It boggles my mind that this product is so bad at any price over 500, yet there are so many raving reviews, while my reviews have managed to collect what may be a record number of "unhelpful" votes.
Anyway... I feel vindicated and hope that I persuaded at least one other person to not waste his time and money with this product.
Every day I thank the powers that be for convincing me to get that piece of garbage out of my house so that I could purchase from Amazon a Sharp 60" LED Aquos with an image that is light years ahead of LG's current state of plasma technology.
<end of rant 8-22-14>
Great TV for the money, however the contrast isn't as good as my other plasma TVs. This may be due to the lower power consumption they're shooting for.
Also, if you use the installed apps don't just click on the 'read it and understand' box without actually reading what you're giving up on some of them, unless you don't mind LG making a database of everything you watch on this TV and selling it along with whatever other personal information they have on you to anyone whose willing to pay.
*update 7/2/14* Got around to setting up Netflix, Amazon, Pandora & Hulu through the smart feature options of this product so that I can bypass the Roku & Home Theater for easier one remote operation for the wife who isn't crazy about dealing with 3 remotes at the same time.
Everything went well, until I tried to sign up to my paid account with Pandora... In order to get a service I'm paying for, I have to agree to allow LG to sell my viewing data to whoever they feel like! Pretty valuable when you add all of the personal information from the warranty card to the mix.
I immediately canceled my Pandora subscription and would ship this thing back in a heartbeat if it didn't take so much effort to hang the bulky son of a gun on the wall.
The limited contrast range is now a bigger aggravation than it was yesterday.
Why in the heck do the stats for a plasma TV rate the contrast with a DYNAMIC RANGE rather than a static or straight contrast range?!
I'm removing a couple stars and changing the title of my review from "Great TV for the money."
***Update 7/14/14***
The delivery guys picked up the LG 60" a few hours ago, and we'll be enjoying the stunningly superiour contrast from my 4 year old Panasonic 42" plasma 720p until this Friday when I expect delivery from Amazon on a Sharp LC-60EQ10U 60-inch Aquos Q 1080p 240Hz Smart LED TV.
Before ordering the Sharp, the wife and I hit up the local Fry's to check out it's picture quality, which was fantastic!
While we were there I compared the image from the LG model I returned, to other sets nearby. It appears that my set wasn't defective, since the one on display showed the same drab highlights and washed out shadow areas.
But don't take my word for it, since I might have it in for LG, have really bad eyesight or just lie for the heck of it...
So... if you're considering purchasing this TV, invest some time and do a little research on the Web. See how long it takes you to find the contrast ratio of this particular model ANYWHERE on the Internet, if you can find it at all. Next, pick any available flat screen television and look up it's contrast ratio and ask yourself why the search process only took about 30 seconds to be fruitful this time!
If the contrast ratio is as fantastic as some have reported in this review area, why is it so difficult to find the exact numbers? Surely LG should give that information in the specification data of this model, unless of course they don't want you to know how bad it is.
**edit 7/16/14**
OK... For this review I received three up votes and TWENTY-TWO down votes (most of which over a period of a couple hours) doesn't quite seem Kosher... Especially when I gave honest observations to help others who may like a good image.
