The game features a variety of play modes, including Power-up mode, which will unleash great streams of golden crowns, white tiaras, and grey skulls as you cut through enemies with your little Angel’s mighty magic shot. - Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2013Deathsmiles Limited Edition comes with game, music CD and faceplate for the older Xbox 360. Deathsmiles is a old school 2-D side scrolling shooter with five characters to choose from Windia, Casper, Follett, Rosa and Sakura to explore Gilverado. Choose your own route via a map after finishing each stage. You can choose different difficulty levels from one to three. The different difficulty levels allows you to customize the bullet count and boss toughness. I was surprised to see there was a online two-player and co-op play option via Xbox LIVE. You can also save replays of your own games if you like to watch them later. You can also download the top 20 scoring runs on the leaderboards and see how you match up against the best players. There are six different versions of the game. The original arcade game, version 1.1 and xbox 360 specific version. There are two different versions of each. In the MBL version there is one extra playable character and one extra level.
All things said and done this is a must have if you are a fan of side scrolling shooter. Even if your not a big fan of these type games you will love this game. I just can't say enough good things about how fun the game is and how hard it is at some points when you crank up the difficulty level to 999. The game did make me think of the game Ikaruga but it is a up and down shooter instead of side scrolling shooter but both are a lot of fun. Bottom line is if you like side scrolling shooters or not you will be pulling your hair out when playing Deathsmiles on it's hardest level.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2010If you are getting this game because you like "bullet hell" shmups then you should get this. Its pretty good and the difficulty is good.
There are big explosion and lots of enemies at once and million bullets. Your pets make a good addition because you can use them to shield yourself.
There are some serious problems though.
-The content: You play as extremely over sexualized underage girls. This doesnt feel right at all. Various screenshots of the girls hugging each other flash at you between levels.
-Graphics: the graphics are ok, however, I felt its something that PS2 can do.
-Extremely short: the whole game is condensed into 5 or 6 levels which can be beat in an hour.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2013This game is very short, but super fun and has a high replayibility factor. I was not able to test the online multiplayer, which seems pretty dead. This is an Xbox 360 port of a popular Japanese arcade game. While the faceplate is charming, it is useless for anyone who does not have an original model Xbox 360. It's also hit or miss if the faceplate you get fits snugly on the front of your console. Remember to take the old faceplate off if you have an original Xbox 360 and plan to use it.
There's 5 playable characters who all have their own unique fighting styles, and you fight through 6 stages in any order you want until you go to the last and final stage. In some game modes there's an extra stage that is very difficult. The highest difficulty of the game introduces bullets that explode from destroyed monsters that you need to eat with each character's given familiar, which acts like an "option" for those in tune with shmup lingo.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2010BACKGROUND ON THE JAPANESE VERSION
I have owned the Japanese version of this Xbox 360 game since its release last year. It is a wonderful game that I've played for many hours. I like to compete for high scores, and I was pleased when I discovered that the Arcade mode in the JP version had 100% perfect slowdown compared to the Arcade original, which I've also spent time with. The version 1.1 mode, and the later Mega Black Label 1.1 mode, both have lots of slowdown too, but these were programmed in specifically that way for the Japanese release, as they were never released in the Arcades before. The other modes, however, all had really reduced slowdown. Here is a list of the modes in the JAPANESE version, with their slowdown reduction given:
-360 Mode - 20~30% of the slowdown was reduced from the Arcade version. The game plays faster overall, and a bit smoother, but this also makes many scoring tricks impossible to do. The top score on the JP leaderboards for this mode is nearly 100million points less than the top score in Arcade mode, to give you an idea of the amount of scoring you cannot do in 360 mode
-Mega Black Label Arcade - 20~30% of the slowdown was reduced here too. This is a shame, since regular DS's Arcade mode was perfect. The Ice Palace stage runs way too fast in this mode, nearly 50% of the slowdown was removed. It feels like you're playing in fast forward!
-Mega Black Label 360 - Again, about 20~30% of the slowdown was removed from the Arcade version. However, the Ice Palace is very close to the Arcade version in gamespeed, which is nice.
I was not really pleased with these three modes. However, since there was an Arcade mode, I didn't need to play 360. And MBL 360 is still very playable, and it's apparently as good as we will get outside of the Arcades.
---------------------------------------------------------
THE USA VERSION IN COMPARISON
When I bought the US version, I was expecting the same game just with English text. However, Cave needlessly altered the slowdown even further! First of all, and most disappointing, they ruined the perfect Arcade Mode. It is now missing lots of slowdown in the last two stages (which are the hardest ones), on the last boss, and in many spots in the first six stages. When it does slowdown, it does not slowdown quite as much as in the original JP version. The other arcade modes (360, MBL, MBL 360) all have even less slowdown than in the JP version. MBL 360 is no longer "very playable", in comparison to the Arcade original. What a shame. Finally, they stripped out loads of slowdown from the console-only MBL 1.1 mode, making it run way too fast! Once again, it feels like you're playing in fast-forward.
I really would not have minded too much if they made these slowdown changes in any modes except Arcade mode (and the console-specific arrange modes 1.1 and MBL 1.1). Since there is a 360 mode, why couldn't they just "adjust" the slowdown there, and keep Arcade mode the perfect archive of the Arcade game that it originally was? Or at least give us a choice in the options between the "new" slowdown and the "original" slowdown. The problem is the JP and US versions are both region-locked to the respective systems, so players have no choice but to buy a Japanese system if they want the "original" game in its unaltered glory. This is hundreds of dollars. Most people won't do that.
The game is still fun, but this alteration is so pointless and stupid I really cannot fathom why they did this. Imagine the Japanese version of Street Fighter IV running at a different speed than the US version, and both versions being region locked to their respective systems. Not that different really. Consistent game speed and slowdown are needed to keep the playing field "even", and to make scores comparable. Fans should express their outrage at this butchered US version so that any future Cave games in the US will be spared from a similar treatment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly awesome
I'm glad that I took the chance on getting this, because it is seriously an addicting game. I thought I would hate it, given that it's a bullet hell shoot 'em up. Which means that the screen is often literally filled with bullets. The more I play, the easier it gets to keep track of where my hit box is and how to weave in and out of all the incoming bullets. Every time that you die, you're allowed to continue right there where you died. Which I was not expecting, but it makes the difficulty of it not frustrating at all. Most of my experience with the game is level 1 stuff by the way.
I've yet to master level 1 without using a continue, [best I did was no continues up until the second to last boss in the game] but I've tried out levels 2, 3 and 999 and it gets insane on those levels. In 999 I would die very frequently. Basically just spammed bombs the entire time to get through.
You have a health bar of 3. Which can be increased by earning 20 million points... yeah. I managed to do it once. You can restore your health with items, which seem really rare. When you lose all your health, you get the option to continue. Which resets your score.
There's also magic items which either give another bomb or fill the screen with one. Bullets take one full bar, hitting an enemy/running into it or getting hit with a physical attack take half a bar. Each time that you lose a bar, your bombs are restored [there are 3, so each life you have at least 9]. The bombs are insanely useful, they clear the screen of all bullets and kill all small enemies and usually with your continual firing kill the large ones as well.
You can power up your attacks when you collect enough tokens/skulls. There's a counter in the corner which goes up to 1,000. Which you activate and it powers up your attacks.
The game includes quite a few versions. There's Arcade, Ver 1.1, Xbox 360, MBL Ver 1.1, MBL Arcade, MBL Xbox 360.
Arcade: Basically the 'bare bones' version of the game.
Xbox 360: Nearly the same as Arcade. Has improved graphics and the first 6 stages have selectable difficulties of 1 and 2, [Arcade default difficulty is 3] and can be selected multiple times on the map.
Ver 1.1: You can move around your familiar manually with the right analog stick. Other changes [from wikipedia]
* Item counter is powered when it reaches 100.
* Item score limit is increased to 99999 points.
* In boss battle, counter bullets are fired during power up mode.
* When stage difficulty is set to 2 or above, counter bullets are fired during power up mode.
* When stage difficulty is set to 3, death mode is automatically triggered.
* When attacking a boss with auto lock shot, item counter increases.
* Extra lives are granted at 30 million and 1 billion points.
Mega Black Label Versions: Each MBL version adds; Level 999 difficulty, the witch Sakura as a playable character and the Crystal Shrine stage to the above three variants.
Each character has 2 endings. The achievements, for those who care, differ in difficulty. They run from easy, to in my opinion impossible.
There are some slowdowns, typically during boss battles when they use one of their various attacks that cover the screen with bullets. Though, it actually kind of helps to get through it. So it's not really that big of a problem for me and shouldn't be for you either. Graphics are okay in my book. It doesn't fill the entire screen of your tv, it has borders like a lot of these games do. Doesn't bother me though. The story is well, it's a shmup... so it's about as good as it'll get in the genre. Though, some of the endings are really touching to my surprise.
I've yet to be able to find a match online, which is a shame because the game would be really fun to play with people. The music is pretty good, and I'm all for soundtracks coming with games. The faceplate is AWESOME and it fits well on my black 360.
