Great light for the money
4 out of 5 stars
Great light for the money
I was skeptical when I bought this, but I'm a bit of a LED flashlight junkie so I had to give it a try. The user interface is different, and interesting. I like the fact that you can vary the intensity and flash rate by rotating the flashlight while holding the button on. It makes it very quick and easy to make changes, although it might be difficult to know the orientation of the flashlight to make these settings in complete darkness. In that respect I think they should have some "brail" type marks on the body of the flashlight that you can feel rather than see. At first I didn't like that it defaults to a steady on (at the last intensity that was set) when you turn it on using a tap on. It will not revert back to flash mode if that was the last mode set. However, the last intensity setting you programmed is retained and used in all modes selected afterwards until the intensity is set again (good for preserving the batteries). This light has great light output for running off of AAA batteries! I haven't used it long enough to comment on how long the batteries last (but then again, I haven't gone through a set yet). The light is very lightweight, albeit a bit bulky to handle the 3 AAA battery pack. I know this light wasn't probably wasn't designed as a tactical light, the finish is very good (typical Maglite), but much too glossy. And, I'm not sure how well the internal battery holder would handle recoil from a rifle or shotgun. But I do have it mounted on my Winchester 1200 Defender right now. Why? Well this light isn't a lumen monster, but it has a pretty strong throw and good side fill. Good enough for close quarter use with a shotgun in my opinion. The neat thing is with the user interface design being what it is, you can mount this with the strobe mode orientation facing up, so that you can tap on the light for steady stream, or hold it momentarily to go quickly into strobe mode (and even vary it if you want by while holding the button and rotating the shotgun). So, mounting in this way you have a means to go into either steady or strobe mode in just a second or two. With it mounted below the magazine tube just ahead of the fore grip on my Defender, I can reach forward with the index finger of my left hand, while gripping the fore grip, and activate/deactivate the light very quickly and easily while bringing the weapon to bear on a target. Like I said, I'm not sure how well it will hold up to the recoil of a rifle/shotgun just yet. The internal battery holder has an "unusual" way of making contacts with spring loaded pins. It may work very well, or it may not. I'll have to put some range time on this setup and update that later. If this does handle recoil, I would hope they come out with a tactical version of this light that has an "orange peel" reflector to eliminate some very defined rings in the light output and a mat-black finish to cut down on reflection. And if it doesn't handle recoil, maybe they could incorporate some improvements in that respect to make a tactical version with the other features above. All in all, a very useful flashlight for the money, cheap and easy to find batteries, good light output. Nice fit and finish, a pretty good value in todays market. That's my humble opinion, hope someone finds it useful.

First off, Maglite is the ONLY brand of flashlight I will probably EVER buy. I've seen what these lights can go through and now that they are FINALLY crossing over into the world of LED's, if they play their cards right, there's no excuse why Maglite flashlights cannot reign supreme once more. I've seen these lights go through everything from being ran over by semi trucks, to being dropped in the middle of a like. When retreived, they still work like the day they were purchased. When you open a Maglite flashlight and hold in your hands, it really feels like you've just purchased a finely crafted product. On top of all this, they're made in the states! No excuse, EVERY household should have a Maglite flashlight, of some size, somewhere where it is always accessable. I would also recommend a large D cell sized light to have as a weapon alone.. You just never know.

I own an LED version of the 4D, 3D, 3AA, 2AA models. I saw this on amazon and actually overlooked it because it was a cylinder shaped flashlight and the package was green. The "MAG" in bold luckily caught my eye. I instantly ordered this flashlight and it was here in 3 days (got it yesterday). I really wasn't expecting much because it runs off of AAA batteries. I turned it on and it blows away ALL my other LED Maglites. I would go as far as to say that it's almost TWICE as bright as my 4D LED (both with fresh batteries) and the light it sprays couldn't get any whiter.

The features on this flashlight are amazing. They ARE a little quirky at first, but once you get it down, you realize every feature on the flashlight can be done by holding a button in, and moving your wrist. Easily done with one hand and there are no switches to hit or anything.

FYI-the tailcap looks like it has a "dial-style" switch on it, but the notch is just to let you where the "Dimmer" position is in case your in pitch black darkness and need to crank up the brightness. It is NOT a switch and is NOT to be turned to the selected mode.

Say you want to use the "Strobe" feature, you spin the actual flashlight to where the "Strobe" mode is at the 12oclock position (as you were looking at the tailcap, aiming at whatever you want to shine the light on) and hold the button for 1 second, then the flashlight enters "Strobe" mode. Keep it held in and turn your wrist to adjust how fast you want the strobe to be.

All modes are adjusted just by holding the button and turning your wrist. When your desired setting is reached, let off the button and it's locked in until you turn off the flashlight.

Some of the features, I can't honestly see ever using (like the 'Nite Lite' mode, but it's cool to have! btw to the other reviewer saying this is mispelled, it's a twist on how "light" is mispelled in "Maglite") however, if I'm ever sitting on top of my car in a flood or something and there are rescue choppers above me, a constant S.O.S. signal would probably come in handy.

The lockout mode is actually pretty cool, again not sure if I'd ever use it. But if you don't want someone messing with your flashlight, lock it, and they'll think the batteries are dead and put it back down. Another thing, it's noted that at the lowest brightness setting, the batteries will last over 200 hours. When you're in a well light room, the dimmest setting doesn't look like much. I tried it lastnight in my bedroom, shined it on my white ceiling and it was still bright enough to see pretty much everything in the room. It would be perfect for reading a book or map on this setting.

In conclusion, THIS IS my new 'go to' small flashlight. It's as wide as my palm and about as big around as the handle of a mop or broom (if this helps). It blows away ALL my other Maglites in brightness (regardless of the lumen rating on the package). If i'm going on a road trip over an hour from my house, I WILL have this flashlight in my pocket and a large D cell maglite in the pouch behind my passenger seat, without question. I can definately see this being mounted at the end of an M16 for military soldiers (for the durability and brightness alone). If you're looking for a flashlight, get a Maglite. If you willing to spend a little extra (5-10 bucks over a 3D sized) for a compact super-bright tactical sized flashlight, get this one!

I own a million LED flashlights - just ask my wife. This one easily fits in the top tier in quality, value, and utility. You can find other good reviews of this light online, so I'll just mention the things that those reviewers did not mention, many of them Maglite hallmark features.

    - It's bright enough to blind a would be assailant.
    - It's sturdy enough to use as a small striking weapon.
    - With the reflector unscrewed and removed, it provides a two foot circle of very uniform light at a distance of one foot. In other words, you could read a book or newspaper with it very comfortably.
    - It's recessed tailcap switch makes it easy to switch on and off with only one hand.
    - It has an interesting "night light" mode which is misnamed, but lets you work in a pitch dark area, lay the light down on the ground, and be able to find it in the dark by the very dim beam it emits. Pick it up, and it's instantly at full brightness, thanks to the built in motion sensor. Kind of quirky, but possibly useful in some situations, and not really a night light in any usual sense of the word.
    - It casts a perfect combination beam with a tight spot in the center, and uniform wide flood around that.
    - It is not truly focusable from spot to flood, except to the slightest degree. But the spot/flood pattern means that doesn't really matter much.
    - It can be set to a very low light level and will burn (they claim) for 250 hours. I think it's true.
    - It can be set to any level between full on and lowest dim and will retain that setting as long as you want to.
    - It runs on three AAA batteries, obtainable almost anywhere in the world.
    - Brightness level seems to be around that of a five cell flashlight, in a package not much bigger than a roll of Life Savers candy, that will comfortably fit in your pocket.

I especially favor lights that can run at selectable dim and bright levels, to suit the situation and conserve battery life when needed. This more than fits that need.

Overall, it's a very versatile, sturdy, powerful light that's well worth a look.

Who can deny the all around quality of a maglite, not me certainly. I bought this to replace a previous one I had "misplaced" (someone probably walked off with it, and I don't really blame them, these things are super sweet).

Accelerometer controls are awesome, dimming function is a godsend. Beam is bright, and spot is pretty tight.

Only complaint is the LED pcb is loose in the tube which means it rattles, doesn't effect performance though so no points off from me.
