My 14 year old daughter is learning to play the acoustic guitar. She is petite, around 5' & this guitar size is perfect for her. Not too heavy or overwhelming. She can comfortably carry it around & it fits perfectly. Also not so small that it looks like a toy. She will be comfortable with this size as she grows into adulthood. This guitar is also great size for petite adults. We ordered & returned the Fender FA 100 full size guitar because it was enormous, thick & heavy on her. It seemed that guitar was made for a 6'4 man! The sound is great - she is a beginner. Well made - very nice guitar! She loves it!

I ordered this for my 13 year old son to use in Guitar class at school. It fits him well, sounds great, and was less expensive and better quality than the guitar offered through the school. I play acoustic guitar myself and am looking to purchase another for a travel/camping guitar. Yamaha makes excellent student instruments.

Okay I bought this the other day knowing that I may have some issues with it, BUT for the price I wanted to see what I could do with it. I build and repair guitars and know a few things about classical guitars specifically. I've wanted an inexpensive 7/8 size to practice on and use when I give lessons. For the price the guitar is fine right out of the well packaged box. I am going to make some changes to it and would recommend anyone purchasing it do the same or similar if you want to improve the sound quality. My changes are:

1.Change the strings! I use Giannini Brazilian Jazz strings. I've tried lots and these are great for the price.
2.Replace the nut and saddle with bone or something that transmits the sound better than the cheap ones installed.
3.The string spacing on this guitar is simply awful. In fact, the spacing is so bad that you could take another 1/8 inch or more from the width of the neck. This can be resolved by replacing the above, nut and saddle. I may have to slot the saddle (like to avoid this)to spread the strings out since it appears to be a non-standard (more narrow)classical bridge.

I like the guitar and it will be fun to hear it after I make the changes. Oh, and I'll probably remove the finish off the top of the guitar and french polish it (blonde shellac)... should improve another 30%.

The CS40 is a slightly smaller classical guitar at a 7/8 size. Don't be fooled because it is still a big guitar. Sometimes I think people think that the 3/4 and 7/8 are really dinky guitars...Not true. The nut size of 1-7/8 inches is still a big stretch for your fingers when compared to a thinner acoustic or electric. I would recommend changing the strings right away to a better medium hardness nylon strings. It will give you a much better sound. This is the perfect size guitar for an adult who wants to noodle in front of the TV, or wants a guitar that he can take camping or for travel. The overall quality and finish was pretty good... not perfect, but at this price it is an excellent value... Check it out.

If you want a nice looking, easy to handle and fun to play classical guitar then look no further. I have tried out many classical guitars (Washburn and Ibanez) and I find it hard to put this one down. It arrived the next day and with a few turns of the tuning pegs I was happily playing away. Thanks Amazon and thank you Yamaha.

I bought this knowing it would not be a premium instrument but I wanted a short scale because I am lazy and like easy fingering. So when I got it I found I liked the dimensions and it was pretty playable. I shaved a bit off the bridge to brighten the instrument and adjusted the saddle a bit to lower the string just a little, that helped a lot. I next added some Savarez strings to brighten it further and that really improved it. Not very bassy but I wanted more harmonic content than it had originally and got it. I might shave some mass off the inner bracing and see if I can get a bit more harmonic content out of it. That might weaken the instrument a bit but it didn't cost me too much anyway.
I really just wanted to see if a small scale guitar could give me what I want and now I think it can. I have a full sized classical that sounds excellent but still wanted something that required less effort to play. This would be a pretty decent starter instrument for a young person just beginning and you wouldn't need to do what I did for them to be able to play it.

This was recommended by my son's music teacher and you can see and hear why. For a 3/4 size it has beautiful resonance that really 'continues' after strumming or picking. It's intended for a seven (nearly eight) year old and easily manageable. Worth considering either a strap or footstool + padded carry bag to complete the package.
