Bought this for my Dad who was visiting me from India to handle the rainy fall season here in upstate NY. Got the medium, fits perfect. keeps you warm and dry...and dad loves it! I too have one of this, but it does not fit well [read smart] for small or think built people like me.

A bought two of these jackets for my spouse and I for our trip to Alaska in June, and they worked really well in that environment.

The Columbia jacket is very lightweight, but manages to trap a decent amount of body heat. The temperatures we used them in ranged from the high 50’s to low 60’s F, and I was okay wearing just a t-shirt underneath if I was moving around bit or a t-shirt and a sweater if I was more sedentary.

Besides the cool temperatures we also used the jackets in a lot of rain. One day it was pretty much a continual shower and both of the jackets lasted for hours without letting any water in, save a small dime sized spot I noticed by my chest that didn’t spread, so it was probably a one time fluke. The built in hoods have a locking mechanism and a decent bill to keep rain out of your face, while the waist is able to cinch up as well.

We used the jackets for general hiking, horseback riding, and ocean kayaking. They held up well in all these environments and didn’t have any issues. I also washed them in my front load washing machine on the gentle cycle and they came out great.

There are lots of pockets scattered throughout. There are two large packets on the sides that are zippered, a small zippered pocket over the left-hand chest, and a large pocket on the inside. I used one of the lower pockets to store my camera, and the chest pocket for my wallet and other small personal items. The inside pocket is not only meant to pack the jacket into for traveling, but when empty makes a huge pocket that you can carry a moderately sized book in!

As far as sizing is concerned they run just a touch big, which is great for layering. I am 5’6” and 135 lbs and wore a small. My spouse is 6’4” and 190 lbs and wore a large.

All in all… excellent rain jackets at a great price.

I purchased a rubberized Columbia raincoat in 1995 that I still appreciate. I live in Northern California and, while it doesn't usually get very cold, it DOES get pretty wet. The old Columbia has a hood which features a stiff bill, so when it's really pouring down hard, the bill keeps your face dry and the hood doesn't flop down and cover your sight. It's also got big cargo pockets with a top flap and a side pocket. I love this old rain jacket - it's made it across the country several times and to Italy, Portugal and Russia, too. It's not light, but it is definitely dry.

However, a rip has developed in the material along the side and I knew it was time to replace it. I found this new Columbia on the Amazon site with an interesting range of prices - something like $39-$86. Huh? Why a price range and not a set price?

Oh... I see - if I want basic black, it's at the low end of the price range, but if I want that sharp red looking coat, it's at the high end, with several other color themes in between. I ordered the black one and got it two days later, thanks to Prime.

The new Columbia is great - in some ways, better than the old rubberized version. The fit feels more tailored and the material is more of a lightweight nylon shell material that breathes. I have to admit that the old rubber coat could get uncomfortably warn when the weather wasn't cold ... it would get steamy in there!

The new Columbia has a breast pocket, (the old one didn't) and the side pockets have zippers, making them more secure. I miss the cargo pockets from the old version, but I'd rather have the security of zippers than the extra storage space. The sleeves on the new coat have a combination of velcro and elastic cuffs, so getting a really good rain barrier is easier than with the old jacket, which only had elastic cuffs. The overall fit and finish of the new Columbia is considerably more classy than with my old jacket - I'll feel more comfortable wearing it with business casual clothing than I would with my old jacket.

My only disappointment is with the bill on the coat's hood. It is just too floppy - unlike the stiff bill on my old jacket - and it won't keep much rain out of my face. It makes the jacket all the easier to stuff in a backpack, but I'll end up carrying a hat with a bill to keep my face dry.

A word about sizes - I wear a "Large" in most things and got this jacket in that size. It fits quite well and am happy with it. But I rarely wear anything bulky underneath it. If you live in a cold climate and put anything approaching the bulk of a down vest or jacket under your rain gear, order a size up.

I'm a big guy (6'3", 290 lbs) who played football in college so I have always had a bulky build and prefer my clothes to be looser fitting, especially so I can layer underneath. I was looking for a good all purpose raincoat that I could wear when I'm doing recreational activities (boating, camping, tailgating, etc) as well as when I need a rain coat for when I'm in khakis and a golf shirt. However I did not want to spend a couple of hundred bucks on Gore-Tex. I read the reviews on this coat and decided to give it a try.

It was put to the test this past week during my family vacation. First we were on a boat in the 1000 Islands region of St. Lawrence River in the US. Some heavy afternoon rain hit us on the bow rider so I donned my new coat and drove the boat home 15 min in a heavy rain and some spray from the waves. Other then a face full of water, I didn't notice water on my skin. While the outside of the jacket did seem to have some dampness, my skin and shirt underneath were dry. The other experience I had with the jacket was in Maine by the ocean. I was packing the car to head back home on the last morning in a torrential downpour. Once again, I was dry underneath.

I like the roominess or the coat very much and my fiancé gave me several compliments on the stylish appearance. It's highly functional for a coat of this price and is nice looking. When i read reviews on here, i always try to take things with a grain of salt and measure the product on what its meant to do instead of holding a product to an unfair standard. If you need a stylish rain coat at a reasonable price that can handle the occasional wetstuff , then this is definitely your coat. If you spend most of your time in the wilderness, work outdoors or on a boat, or as a crew member on the Maid Of The Mist, then this is not the jacket for you and you are into an entirely different application. It's a great pick up for the price!
