The Rampage III Black Edition is said to take overclocking to the next level and it does so with a fancy new black BIOS. The specifications list includes some pretty impressive memory support, not only can the board be crammed with 48GB of RAM, but it can also be clocked at 2.2GHz and in triple-channel that's a lot of bandwidth.

Although there is a SupremeFX X-Fi 2 8-Channel HD Audio Codec onboard offering features such as X-Fi Xtreme Fidelity, EAX Advanced HD 5.0, THX TruStudio PRO and Creative ALchemy, you can forget all that as Asus has included an add-in card called ROG ThunderBolt. This is essentially an Asus Xonar sound card with a Bigfoot Killer E2100 dedicated network processing unit (NPU) included.

Of course there is a whole host of other features included as well, which we will get to shortly. Yet before we do there is probably one teeny tiny thing I should mention... the price, and if I am honest it's not that tiny. Brace yourself... the Rampage III Black Edition is currently retailing for $560 US, making it 33% more expensive than the G1.Sniper and 19% more expensive than the G1.Assassin.

I bought this board since I already have the Rampage III Extreme and was hoping the Black edition would have been a step-up. If you are considering buying this board I suggest you go to ASUS forum and read the problems with the board. The problems I am having are the same being reported on the forum. I have had the board for six months and ASUS has still not release a bios fix for any of the issues mentioned. There has not been one bios or any update to the motherboard. Issues that I am have consist of the following: the Thunderbolt card turns one of you your 16x slots for your second video board into 8x slot. Sound drivers for the Thunderbolt card are unstable. Temp sensors on the motherboard for the processor are 10C to 15C to low. My corsair 2000Mhz memory that I use in the Rampage III Extreme will not run in the black edition. The led error code on the motherboard displays a error code that Asus does not know what it means and is not listed in the manual. Tech support from Asus, which use to the best in the industry is now almost non existent. They will always say that level II support is busy and they will call you back, but they never do. The Marvell controller on the card has issues when running AHCI with SSD drives so you will have to use IDE, which will only provide 3Gbit/sec instead of the 6Bbit/sec you are supposed to have. Like I said just read their forum and look at all the issues and the lack of support. Then make up your mind if this is the board for you.

    Update
My motherboard stop working during its warrantee period. I sent it back to ASUS for repair. ASUS sent me a replacement board, except it was an older model that does not use the processor socket or memory speed of the board I sent. They informed me that they were well within there rights of my warrantee to send me whatever board they had in-stock at the time. I never heard of a company ever doing this in my life. Some company's if they can’t repair their product they will send you a replacement of the same model or an equivalent product. I have never heard of a company that will downgrade your hardware at their discretion. I have been calling the company for several days trying to talk to a supervisor only be told that supervisors do not take calls. When I asked for an RMA to return the board they sent me they even refused to take the board back. ASUS customer service is just not what it used to be.

The ASUS Rampage III Black edition is no joke. The motherboard is expensive, and the moment you begin digging into the box you'll understand why. If you are willing to shell out the cash for this black behemoth, its my humble opinion you'll love it. If you have a moment, I'll happily tell you why.

    Features

This motherboard is LOADED with features (I mean c'mon this thing has features to aid in cooling with liquid nitrogen! ...no joke), but I don't want to waste your time by listing everything that you could read on the manufacturers website. Instead, I'm going to highlight a few things I find of particular interest.

    Thunderbolt Audio/LAN Card

Firstly, the item description here on Amazon is a little lite on the details. Not only are you getting the motherboard but also a Killer NIC (network interface card) and audio card. The LAN card works very well, but here, depending where you live and your actual ISP connection, your mileage will vary. The motherboard also features an Intel NIC in case for some reason you did not want to use the Thunderbolt unit. Having a dedicated network processesing unit is a big plus, especially with cool software features ASUS includes (bandwidth tester, bandwidth control, app blocker, gaming monitor).

Now my favorite half of the Thunderbolt is the audio portion, in particular the built-in headset amp. I use Astro A30 headphones, and when paired with the Thunderbolt the sounds are richer and more immersive than ever. Even with your average set of PC speakers the sound is excellent and a sure improvement over what you find a on a typical motherboard. Overall, the addition of the Thunderbolt really begins to justify the $500+ price tag.

    Crossfire and SLI Support

The board can handle up to four graphics cards in a three way SLI or Crossfire X configuration. Unfortunately, I don't have enough cards to fill the max capacity but it's there for those that do. This is great considering the board is still a standard ATX configuration (it is slightly wider than most ATX boards however). If you are interested in this board you might be a bit of tech guru, and so, for you, I'm going to add the supported slot information here:
    4 x PCIe 2.0 x16 , support x16; x16/x16; x16/x8/x8 and x8/x8/x8/x8 configurations
    2 x PCIe x1 )

    Overclocking

If you are looking at this board, its very likely you are pairing it with the Core i7 Extreme edition. In my opinion the Digi DRM + high quality goods on the board will give you some of the best over-clocking results possible. I can tell you that 4.2 Ghz is a breeze to achieve in 10 minutes of tinkering.

    Quality

This motherboard is loaded with high quality construction and it shows. There are fewer phases surrounding the 1366 socket (8+3) than commonly seen on high-end boards but the ones that are present are of much higher quality than typical. The board has an excellent and sleek looking cooler on the PWM and everything on the board looks and feels like it was intended for excellent performance while promoting longevity.

    Styling

You might be able to tell from the pictures, but this board has a really attractive black/red theme. If you have a window on your case, this thing looks SLEEK! The all black board coupled with the red highlights and ROG led is simply perfectly executed.

    Final Thoughts

If you are creating an ultimate X58 build, this is the motherboard I would recommend. It's LOADED with features and looks amazing. The addition of the Thunderbolt makes this a very attractive bundle. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll try to respond ASAP!
