- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2019Got it for my son, and he is very pleased with the all around abilities of the laptop. He wanted this one for its speed and storage, and it works fairly well on games, too. Very pleased with the purchase. Very pleased with the delivery time, and packing as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2020The computer has a nice solid feel and appearance. It seems to work well but not as fast as anticipated. I am not a gamer so do not know that part. Have only had a week but will probably send back. It just will not acquire a wifi signal and when gets a signal it will not stay connected. Very disappointed. From the description I thought it would be faster. Glad I am not trying to use it for games.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2019At first it seems like a great computer, and im sure it is, but i dunno if this is just how this computer is, or if theres a setting that wrong when it comes out of the box but I keep getting a blue screen that says there was an error and have to restart. Also... mine runs pretty slow. Ive barely put anything on it and its has trouble opening up basic programs and takes time... with these specs i expected photoshop to take less then a minute like my 4gig old computer did. Then to save a file in photoshop takes forever for a 300mb Tiff file when it should take seconds. i dunno. im not as happy as i thought i would be, but i might have just gotten a bad one. i dunno
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2019This replaced a tired 7 year old Dell XPS15 L502X i7 GT525M w/16GB of RAM all SSD. The ASUS FX705GM is thinner, lighter, has a larger display with a tiny bevel, and a chassis barely larger than the 15.6” Dell. The FX705GM can pass for a business laptop after disabling the crazy LEDs. I'm using the laptop primarily for IT consulting and security work. I’ve been playing 1st person shooters since Doom and still game occasionally so the 1060 was a must. On paper, it's my sweet-spot for price, looks, and performance. Despite some quality control issues, overall I’m very pleased with the laptop.
I opened the case on the first laptop and found one of the speaker wires crushed and two small plastic tabs intended to retain the wire in place broken off. Also, the case screws were barely hand tight. They had what appeared to be blue lock tight on all of them, but I suspect they would've eventually fallen out if not tightened. This laptop was returned.
The second laptop arrived with a distinct rattle. Opening the case I found 6 small (1mm-4mm) black plastic pieces. I couldn’t find any broken or damaged tabs, wires, or missing small parts so I’m assuming they were remnants from manufacturing. I also found a sliver of what looked like thin cardboard paper 70mm long and 3mm wide stuck to the motherboard. Any one of these bits could potentially cause serious issues if ingested by a fan or melted. The screws on the second laptop weren't as loose as the first.
My network environment blocks inbound and outbound network connections to most countries outside of north america and western europe. The FX705GM OS was attempting to access IP addresses in mainland China. Blocking this access caused several of the default Asus apps to hang and noticeably slowed down bootup/shutdown. A fresh download and install of Windows along with selective install of the Asus drivers resolved the issues.
I was able to install a NVMe Samsung SSD 970 Pro and a SATA Samsung SSD 860 Evo and enable hardware encryption on both drives. As of BIOS 301, I couldn’t get the laptop to boot off any USB devices other than the Windows install. This prevented me from using Samsung’s secure erase tool. I eventually got around the problem by installing the OS to one disk, using diskpart clean on the second disk, and repeating the process.
Some tips if you buy this latop: • The BIOS and Samsung Magician would only “see” the the NVMe disk with AHCI enabled under SATA settings. • If your screen starts to flicker off or momentarily go black on battery, go into the Intel UHD Graphics Control Panel, Power, and disable Display Refresh Rate Switching. It’s switching from 144 to 60 to save energy. • Updating the BIOS requires the USB disk to be fat32. • The machine is happy running CORSAIR Vengeance Performance 32GB (2x16GB - CMSX32GX4M2A2666C18). • If you buy one of these and open it up, note the screw sizes/placement. They’re all the same thread but different lengths potentially leading to a dented case (from the inside). • If you care about your laptop randomly connecting to potentially hostile countries, do a fresh install. • Opening the case will require prying. Be sure to use the appropriate non-marring plastic tools. I use car dash prying tools and haven’t had anything break or scratch.
General Pros • Ridiculously fast boot time off 970 Pro and 32GB RAM. With a completely shut down machine, the Win 10 Pro 1803 boot time is less than 4 seconds from touching the power button to being able to logon. It felt just as fast with the OEM disk. • Easily the fastest system I’ve ever owned. • Very fast out of the box. With no tweaking or OC, 3814 3DMARD Time Spy score. 3597 GPU and 5807 CPU (32GB) • 144 Hz display looks great. • Compatible with newer NVMe drives and HW encryption. • Keyboard feels very smooth. • Easy access to drivers and apps on Asus site. The site was easy to use. • I an a klutz so the ruggedness appeals to me.
General Cons • The speakers are mediocre at best. • Sloppy OS install. • The MyAsus app and automated Asus driver updates were a mess. This was likely made worse by my FW. • Upgrading the HDD and RAM require prying off the entire back cover.
Overall, despite the QC issues, I’m very pleased. Unless I run into some additional unforeseen problems, I’ll keep the laptop. If Asus can resolve the QC issues the laptop would be 5 stars

- Reviewed in the United States on June 22, 2019Nice looking machine and very light. First thing I wanted to get rid of was the all red back lit keyboard. You can't so you better like red. Next was the slow 2,2 mghz cpu that you can't turbo. I updated the bios (easy) but no provision to over clock or turbo. Speakers are very weak. Had to crank the volume up to 90% to hear at normal volume. Works well with headphones, however I don't wear them that often. Over all I wasn't impressed considering that my 5 year old Alienware Laptop is as good if not better. Returned to Amazon the next day .
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2011I love this laptop. It's big in size but it's got 3Gb RAM on the video card so it needs the extra fans in the rear. Still haven't had a chance to check out the 3D abilities of it, but will do so soon.
16Gb DDR3 RAM - Awesome
3Gb RAM on the Video Card - Awesome
2.2Ghz Core i7 - Awesome
160Gb SSD - Awesome
750Gb Secondary HDD - Awesome
Comes with a great backpack for carrying.
All around an AWESOME laptop.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2023Ive owned this laptop for almost five years. the audio is not great and its the noisiest computer/laptop that Ive ever owned. Would I buy it again? NO. If you are looking for a quiet laptop. This is not it. Its disappointing because my last ASUS laptop was wonderful.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2011The laptop has been outstanding. I don't use it for gaming...I use it for video and photo editing. The speed with which this machine churns through data is very fast. The screen is also amazing. I highly recommend this laptop.
