Hey There, It's Yogi Bear
Everybody's favorite bear stars in his own full-length animated feature. When Yogi comes out of hibernation in Jellystone Park, he demonstrates the qualities that make him so rare a bear: He successfully pits his wits against those of those devious circus magnates, the Chisling Brothers; daringly raids Jellystone's picnic areas disguised as the "Brown Phantom"; and romances his ever lovin' gal friend, Cindy Bear, in this animated adventure that travels the world from Jellystone to Venice.

Yogi Bear is a classic Hanna-Barbera animated program about the smart and very mischievous Yogi Bear, his young bear friend Boo Boo, the love-struck Cindy Bear, and their escapades in Jellystone Park under the watchful eyes of Ranger Smith. This full-length, 1964 movie was Hanna-Barbera's first animated theatrical release and features several songs including James Darren's rendition of "Ven-e Ven-o, Ven-a." Re-mastering gives this DVD a nice crisp picture. Kids and adults alike will delight in the crazy capers of Yogi Bear--escapades that revolve around satisfying Yogi's never-ending appetite and range from posing as the park's food inspector to unleashing special forces of trained picnic ants on unsuspecting picnickers. When Yogi's pranks go too far, Ranger Smith ships him off to the San Diego zoo, but things don't go quite as planned and Yogi ends up setting off on his own in pursuit of Cindy Bear while Boo Boo is left in Jellystone without his two closest frien! ds. Yogi and Cindy wind up in every conceivable situation from being held against their will by the shady "Chizzling Brothers Travelling Circus" to inadvertently winding up smack in the middle of New York city, but thankfully, this "smarter-than-your-average-bear" is determined to find a way to safely return to Jellystone Park. --Tami Horiuchi

- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2011I saw this movie back when it first came out in 1964 (I was 8), and it's just as great as I remember. After several years of "limited" TV animation, this first feature-length movie by Hanna-Barbera since their divorce from MGM in 1957 (they did the Tom & Jerry cartoons) gave them a chance to show what they could do.
Both the animation and backgrounds are much more elaborate than the Yogi Bear TV cartoons. Daws Butler and Don Messick are in full voice, Butler as the voice of Yogi, Messick as Boo-Boo and Ranger Smith. The songs and score, by David Gates and jazz musician Marty Paich, are the last gasp of traditional pre-rock 32-bar popular music. Younger listeners may blanch; these 54-year old ears enjoyed the h*** out of it.
Cindy Bear's oh-so-demure yet marriage-hungry girly-girl wouldn't play well in theaters now, but hey, this was 1964. Don't analyze. Just enjoy, and carry yourself back to a time when cargo planes had propellers, cars had fins, and women wore skirts to go camping in national parks. One thing hasn't changed: as an old lady in an elevator harumphs toward movie's end, "New York's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there."

- Reviewed in the United States on September 12, 2011Out of all of the early cartoon characters, Yogi Bear I always had time for, I think Yogi had that mischief making imp that's in all of us helping us to really connect.
Whenever he's swiping picnic baskets or trying to help out Yogi is fun to watch as he drives Ranger Smith up the wall.
In this film he and Boo-Boo escape from Jellystone Park to try and find Yogi's sweetheart Cidy Bear who's been sent to a zoo in error and they come across the Chiseling Brothers Circus where Cindy is being held and they have a dog that laughs an awful lot like Muttley from Wacky Races too.
It's all good clean fun and a classic in its own right, so hey there, grab a copy today.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2011I am so glad this movie finally came to DVD. I had recorded it from TV onto videotape years and years ago. I think it's such a great movie with lots of happy, peppy songs (that I STILL remember) and wanted to give it as a gift to my great-niece. I know she will have a lot of enjoyment watching it as I did as a child. It's also nice that it's not a short length movie but a full length movie. The plot is interesting and the characters are plentiful (ones to cheer for and ones to boo at). Very good movie.

Yogi has always been a favourite for years, and it seems so with my grandchildren too. This DVD really captures the real Yogi and his antics. Well worth watching over and over.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, relentlessly good natured and, most of all, fun
William Hanna and Joseph Barbera's classic Tom and Jerry cartoons may have won seven Oscars between 1944-53, but it wasn't until after MGM shut down their animation department and they built a successful career in TV animation that they finally made their first feature film, 1964's Hey There, It's Yogi Bear. While it's not a landmark in the art of animation, it is surprisingly enjoyable and definitely a notch above the average TV spin-off. It doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel, the first third following the smarter than the average bear's attempts to outsmart Ranger Smith by stealing all the food he can lay his hands on, but when girlfriend Cindy Bear gets shipped to the St Louis Zoo only to end up in the despicable Chizzling Brothers' Circus, the film breaks out of the familiar confines of Jellystone Park as Yogi and Boo Boo go off in search of her in a cross country odyssey. It's fast paced and relentlessly good natured and, most of all, fun, the songs forgettably upbeat with one outstanding setpiece as Yogi suddenly develops the singing voice of James Darren for a Venetian fantasy number that sees Boo Boo's gondolier constantly drawing the short straw and finding himself in harm's way. There's also the introduction of a future Hanna-Barbera TV favorite in the form of devious dog Mugger, who'd change his name - but not his throaty cackle - and find fame as Muttley in Wacky Races and Dastardly and Mutley.
Warners' DVD has no extras but does boast a particularly good widescreen transfer that compensates for a few minor scratches near the beginning of the film with excellent colour and definition.
