Decent unit, but could be much more convenient to adjust programming
2 out of 5 stars
Decent unit, but could be much more convenient to adjust programming
I've had this unit for about 1.5 months. Summary: The unit looks great and works very well, but it is not very convenient to program. Programming the unit is not hard per say, BUT it is VERY VERY tedious. It has all the features you could want, but they aren't intuitive to program, and the manual is a little difficult to understand. Installing the unit was a breeze, no issues there. Programming the unit wasn't difficult either, although the process was not as streamlined as it could have been. Once you've set your schedule for one day, you can copy it to the next, and the next, and so on. So if every day has the same schedule, you're golden. However, if you want to set the same schedule for say Monday, Wednesday, Friday, you'll have to set each one individually. Also, there is no way to see the schedules in aggregate form. You have to go into the schedule process for each day and click through "next/yes" for each setting in the schedule for each day; all this to simply see the settings for a given day. You cannot jump right to a day in the middle of the week, you have to start from monday and work your way through all the different schedules/settings. Example: Monday: 1) set wake/morning start TIME, press "yes/next" (the difference between "next" and "yes", is that if changes were made to the current setting time/temp, "yes" saves and moves to the next field, while "next" resets the change, and moves to the next field) 2) set wake/morning desired TEMP, press "yes/next" 3) set leave/day start TIME, "yes/next" 4) set leave/day desired TEMP, press "yes/next" 5) set return/evening start TIME, press "yes/next" 6) set return/evening desired TEMP, press "yes/next" 7) set sleep/night start TIME, press "yes/next" 8) set sleep/night desired TEMP, press "yes/next" Now you get moved on to Tuesday, where you repeat the process. So scrolling through the days can be a bit painful (~8 presses per day). You also have to go through this process separately for heat AND cooling. You have the option of hitting "copy" if you know you want to copy the previous day's schedule to the current day (this seems somewhat backwards and unintuitive). You can hit "exit" in the middle of all this, and my assumption is that only the values that have been changed will remain changed. I'm not interested enough to play with this specifically to find out. So if you don't intend to modify or look at your various schedules and settings, often, it will be fine. If you want to change the schedule often, or even just want to check it, periodically, it's probably going to feel like a hassle. Also it only has 1 field for displaying temperature, so you can't see the current temperature and the "Set At" temperature at the same time. It displays the current/actual temperature by default, if you want to see the "set at" temperature, press the temperature field once; it will flash, show the "set at" temperature, and eventually go back to displaying the current/actual temperature. Final gripe/comment, and I realize it's kind of a picky one. I'm a night owl, and am usually up well after midnight. I wanted to program the unit to start the night/lower/sleep temperature at 2am (ie roughly the time I go to sleep). I couldn't do this because each "day" ends at midnight. While this makes perfect sense, it's something I had not thought of until I tried to program the unit. I would suspect most programmable units also suffer from this issue. So I can't hold it against the Lux either, but I figured I would mention it for the other night owls out there. Sooooooooo.... Pros: - Easy setup and installation - Very nice looking display - Works exactly as their manual describes (meaning controls, AND the accurateness of the start-stop for scheduling) - Energy Usage timer (shows how long it has had heat/cooling "on") w/ reset - Temperature calibration feature - Customizable "swing" value up to 2.25 deg - Controls lock (prevent unauthorized changes) - Smart Recovery feature (where the unit can turn on "early" so that at the start of the "wake/morning" and "return/evening" settings, the temperature is already at the desired level; this feature is off by default) Cons: - Schedule/day programming is not geared toward allowing you to make changes without going through schedules for all days - No way to reset values for your current schedule once you've changed them, without exiting and starting all over - Terminology used in display can be unclear terms like "day, morn, eve, night" instead of "wake, leave, sleep"; "next/yes" instead of "cancel/ok" - Can't see "set at" temperature and current temperature at the same time When I started writing this review (as a result of a prompting email from amazon), I had no intentions of replacing the unit; however, after going through all the pros and cons, I just realized I really dislike the inconvenient programming. So now I will be getting the Honeywell RTH8500D 7-Day Touchscreen Programmable Thermostat. I've looked at the manual for the Honeywell (found it online here: f) and it appears much, much easier to program. It allows you to program multiple days at once, switch back and fourth between the 4 periods of the schedule (wake, leave, return, sleep) let's you make several changes to the currently selected day(s), set schedule temperatures for both heating and cooling from the same screen then save or cancel the changes all at once. (one slight downside, is that it appears the time settings for heating and cooling have to be the same) A second alternative, closer in price to this Lux unit is the Honeywell RTH7600D Touchscreen 7-Day Programmable Thermostat (manual here: ), it's not quite as convenient to program as the 8500, but still looks much easier to program than the Lux. Hope someone finds this helpful! :-)

I got this to replace the Honeywell Pro 5000 that had came with my new Carrier Central AC System 8 month ago. The Honeywell Pro Series didn't care of it. It always shows two readings one I set it too and the other is what the room temp was. But to me that never was showing the right temp for the room nor the set temp was always the same as the room temp. Confusing and too me it would run so long and come but on so quick after that. The installer company of the Carrier Central AC System told me it's suppose to work like that or I should get the Honeywell Pro 8000 Series with Humidity feature and that cost would be $400 to install with the unit. Way too much money. LUX cost far less and simple to install. Just use the lettering tape to mark off your prior thermostat in my case the Honeywell Pro 5000. LUX T9000TS didn't go in the same spot I had to move it to the left so that the C wire would reach. I see there is a face place for this LUX, but I'll take a past on it. Might block the sensors on this model.

I say about 20 to 30 minutes to get this installed. I had to remove the old one I see that the tech install a very long drywall screw and I don't know why he did that? I couldn't even use those prior holes. So I had to make two additional holes to install the TX9000TS correctly. I had use had bubble level measure to make sure it was leveled. Once it was and the drywall thread ends were in the wall I could screw in the screws to make sure it was tighten and won't shift on me later on. Attached the wires by lettering which I had taped on prior. That was easy. Inserted 2x AA Costco Kirkland Alkaline Batteries in the LUX. Snap it onto the back plate and it was on.. After that it didn't come on for cooling. I live in hot humid climate. So that's one of the main reasons to get this unit. I like how oversize it is. Letters and numbers are huge. I can see the panel from different angles. The Blue Amber Glow Light adds a nice touch to the TX9000TS.

I am impress with it. Once I figured out the programming of the clock and the cool temp pre-program settings had to be override to my temps. 77F instead of some odd ones like 78F, 82F and 85F is what was seeing through the week and weekend time, date and day of the week settings. So now it reads 77F for Cool. Just make sure when you change the time and temp you select YES after you do so it locks in. Otherwise you'll have to repeat the steps. Don't know why they didn't have prior touch button they only have NEXT.

My Central AC has delay before and after the unit turns on. LUX seems to work well with step-up I have here.

This was a very good investment and saved me to have the AC Company Tech come out on his own time to install the Honeywell Pro 8000 for $50 plus the price of that one was overprice at best. Still the deal on this one on Amazon came out cheaper plus I installed it so I know it's working better.

I would recommend this one and after reading Consumer Reports list of which thermostat to buy this one was on top of the most expensive Honeywell Thermostats as the best on to get!

Three nice features were the Air Filter Change, Battery Low Warning and Temp Log Usage Statics.

I've had this thermostat for a little over a year. It replaced an old cheap 5-1-1 RiteTemp from HD which was too problematic and erratic. Main reason for buying this was the 7-day programming. Based on CR rating and customer reviews I decided for this unit. I use it only for heating with only 2-wire system. It keeps my temperature more constant than the previous thermostat and keeps the house more comfortable. I have not experimented with the smart temperature setting that achieves the desired temperature at the set program time. The unit produces a fairly distinct click when the turning the furnace on or off. Not a big deal but may bother some people. The display is clear, large, easy to read and looks good. As far as programming goes, it's easy to follow and simple as with most similar electronic gadgets. Some complain that it is not that easy to program byt I see those complains for Honeywell as well. Bottom line, read the manual befor you buy to make sure it does what you want it to do, after you buy to learn how it works and then set it and forget it.
Couple of annoyances I have noticed but by no means deal breakers: 1. as others already mentioned, only the actual temperature is displayed, no set temperature display, 2. no special program, my 511 thermostat had a special program that I could use while I was home on a day off that would normally fall into mid-week program. Such as Thanksgiving on Thursday I would prefer to have a special program to activate on those special days that would mimic my weekend program. Most 511 thermostats have this feature. With this unit I have to use the hold feature and use the thermostat as manual thermostat. I think Honeywell also does not have this on their 7-day model.
Other than that, I would definitely recommend it.
  • Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2013
I read a lot of reviews on this and elected to buy it over the honeywell for its supposed better interface and ability to 'copy' the program'. I think thermostat people aren't GUI design people so you end up with a device that does what it does with a less than satisfactory method of programming. It does work but some of it isnt intuitive like 'YES' is actually what you have to press to 'SAVE' a setting and if you dont click YES you can still move on but the setting doesnt stick. The other thing that isnt great is that you can tell what the room temp is with the big '72' noted on the image but you can't by looking at it tell what the set point currently is for the room. So it may say '64' when your setpoint is 72 or vice versa. When you touch the screen it shows you the setpoint but its not clear where to touch the screen without forcing it to override. Really it should display both #'s. The only thing it displays to know its heating is the flame.

Next up that is annoying is the 'TEMP CAL' configuration. what's it for exactly? I can elect to go -1 or -2 etc or +1 or +2 but why would i want to do this. Is the idea that the thermostat isnt accurate so I need to offset it with the actual temperature by getting a reading from another thermometer that shows a more accurate reading and then adjust? The manual is not that great, just tells you that you can do this, but not why.

There is also the section on 'SWING' which makes some sense but the manual or the internets don't get too detailed about what is really optimal here or if the default setting is optimal and you should just leave it.

    Otherwise:
Fit and finish is decent. LCD is average for a thermostat, I dont need an 800x600 screen for this. Big and readable and good backlight. Easy 5 minute hook up to the wires and easily covers the marks left from the previous LUX which was smaller.

Overall, decent and better than my old one
