Learn from my mistakes. This carrier isn't fit for flying. Then my cat ripped a hole in the carrier during the flight. Surely - Petmate must has a malfunction in this one carrier, right? Every big company may ship a dud. I sent them a concern after my trip, and I got a reply back that stated: "Thank you for alerting us to this matter. The unit is not defective and mesh material provided for ventilation will rip especially if it is snagged or pulled on." In other words - This product will rip if your cat doe CAT THINGS. Attached is the photo of the tear, and the email reply.

    My husband and I needed a pet carrier ASAP for our 6 month old Boston Terrier/Schnauzer mix puppy. We were traveling home for the holidays and had planned on taking our dog with us on the plane. I had purchased one from PetCo but when I got it home it was way too small. I was able to find this one on Amazon.com that was the exact size of the largest soft sided carrier we could bring onto the plane with us as a carry-on. We were happily suprised when we received this carrier in the mail, it was definitely large enough for our small dog, he is approx. 16 lbs. when we traveled, and he was able to actually turn around in the carrier while it was zipped shut.

    We had no problems while traveling either, the carrier fit easily under the seat in front of us, and he still was able to move around slightly while under the seat. The sides are mesh, which I think is nice so he could see us & we could keep an eye on him while he was in the carrier.

    There is a pocket on one end, so it's nice to keep some treats in or something. I also like that this carrier has a shoulder strap and handles for carrying, gives you options which is nice.

    I would definitely recommend this pet carrier for a pet around 15-16 lbs.

    This Pet Taxi did not hold up between our house and the airport. It may have been adequate for short trips to the local veterinary clinic or for transporting small kittens but the initial experience caused us to discard it. My several years experience with cats suggests that a more substantial fabric with some "windows" of the netting material as well as a SUPPORTED BOTTOM (wood or plastic insert for strength) is essential for the SAFETY and COMFORT of the animal inside. I learned that you need to carefully evaluate HOW a product is to be used by you before making a choice. I made an inadequately informed choice.

    One additional point to consider: When you, the driver, are the only person in the car, an animal escaping from an inadequate pet taxi can be the cause of a serious accident. Soft-sided pet taxis are not a good choice while transporting an animal in a car and probably are not intended for that use.

    The best part of this carrier is probably the multiple entries. When prepping a cat to go to the vet I'll zip the front and undo the top. I can then easily put them in feet first and zip the cover over them once they're in. Then when we get to the vet I can unzip the front and let them walk right out or if they're feeling antisocial I can unzip the top again and retrieve them that way. No need to get in a tug of war with them or have trouble reaching inside to get them out.

    It folds up so it's easy to store when not in use, doesn't take up much room at all. The flat bottom piece can also be removed and vacuumed or otherwise cleaned if needed. It is lightweight, doesn't add much extra weight which can be a big deal depending on the pet. You can carry it using the handles on top though it also has an attachable shoulder style strap if you need more hands, which has come in very handy when trying to navigate short distances with multiple cats.

    I've had only one cat that was a bit too much for this carrier. We drove him and several other cats in the car for about 24hrs. In that time he tore at the mesh with his teeth and claws and as we pulled into our destination he'd finally gotten a hole big enough to stick his head out, not for lack of trying. Ideally he'll not need to drive that far again so I bought another one because the carrier really does work well.

    Unfortunately I've had to revise my review of this carrier. After a few months of use I posted that this carrier was 'perfect,' but I'm afraid I spoke too soon. After less than a year of use, the zippers on both of my pet taxis failed. The stitching didn't rip but the zippers themselves no longer seal allowing my cats to just push their way out of the carriers. Very disappointing after I was so impressed with this product.

    Further inspection shows me that the zippers are made of a rather flimsy plastic, not metal. One of my cats managed to push hard enough at the top of the carrier to 'burst' the zipper apart. My second cat figured it out after seeing the first escape. Now that they've learned they can do that, they continue to do so every time they're placed in their carriers. In light of this I've dropped my review from 5 to 3 stars. I enjoyed the perks of this product, but I'm not willing to repurchase since the lifetime of the pet taxi appears to be less than a year.

    I've been using the same hard-sided plastic pet carrier since I had my first cat as a child. The thing was excellent, but everything has to go eventually, and I wanted to try something that would fold up nicely when not in use. I also wanted something that was easy to clean since not all of my cats have been good travelers. I was very wary of a soft-sided carrier, though, because I didn't want the animals to claw right through the mesh and escape. I was also worried about size, since the old carrier was big enough for 2 cats easily.

    I can't say enough about the petmate taxi. It looks great, works well, and the cats actually like it. I leave one out now because my cats like to sleep inside of it. I have two 14 lbs mainecoons and each one easily fits into this carrier with enough room to turn around. The top zipper is perfect for going to the vet or anywhere else stressful because I can stick my hand right in and comfort the cat. The case is very well ventilated and lets them see out and get plenty of air. The semirigid bottom is removable in case there is an accident, and is very comfortable for them. The should strap is a godsend, especially when both cats need to go somewhere.

    The case is lightweight and folds up to easy closet storage. No more shelf dedicated to holding the plastic carrier. The material is also pretty durable and we've had no rips or escapes yet, despite several uses. I can't promise that a determined cat won't get through, so don't use this as a 'crate' or anything like that, but for a carrier it's more than strong enough. All-in-all, 5 stars!

    I used to have a hard carrier with a metal cage door and they would just freak out and I was scared they would hurt themselves. I got this hoping they wouldn't hurt themselves. I can fit both kittens in it now but I have ordered another one as they won't fit together for long. I was worried they would put a hole in it but it has held out to some serious claw pulling and they love playing in it too...my boy kitten loves just sleeping it. They are also much calmer in this carrier than the hard carrier - I think because they can see out better and the bottom is much comfier for them. No matter how much clawing they do, I know they can't hurt themselves and the carrier holds up. My kittens travel in the car quite a bit with me so it's had a number of tests.

    Perfect size for my fat cats, I was worried they would hate the bag but they like it so much I have to get another one because they've been fighting over who gets to sleep in it since the day it arrived. I've lugged a cat around the apartment in it too, which they don't necessarily love but it does the job (read: kitty won't bust through the bottom). As one past reviewer mentioned, long rides may not be advisable as the mesh could easily be torn through by a determined cat, but it's perfect for my needs (to shuttle kitty back and forth to the vet, or for running down 9 flights of stairs in case of emergency).

    My only complaint would be that the hard flat bottom piece doesn't stay in nicely, and without it in place the whole carrier kind of falls in on itself. The good news is that when you have your animal inside it stays put and seems fairly comfy.
