Battery Powered
The unit can provide approximately 15 hours of laser/radar detection with three rechargeable AA Ni-MH batteries, or you can plug it into your vehicle's cigarette lighter adapter (this will recharge the batteries).
Blue LCD Text Display
The XTR-540's brilliant display provides distinct visual confirmation of signals detected, signal strength, and indicates engaged modes of operation.
Patented POP Mode Detection
There are new guns out there that operate just like the instant-on guns of the past but with a very tough new twist--POP mode! This new gun is a normal K and Ka band radar gun detectable by most radar detectors made in the past 30 years until it's in POP mode. When the gun is in POP Mode and activated, a brief burst of energy, less than 1/15 of a second, is transmitted and the vehicle's speed is quickly acquired. A detector without POP Mode detection capability cannot respond to this brief transmission, but the XTR-540 can.
Low Profile Alert Periscopes
Whistler's Low Profile Alert Periscopes provide an added attention getting visual alert. The two extra LEDs flash on and off when the unit alarms to provide a unique visual alert.
3 City Modes/Highway Mode
Highway mode provides full audio and visual warning of laser/radar systems while maintaining full sensitivity. Highway mode is the default setting of all Whistler's laser/radar detectors. City mode helps reduce the annoyance of automatic door openers and burglar alarm alerts by providing an initial alert (same distance as Highway Mode) then remaining quiet unless the signal strength becomes very strong. When the signal increases the unit will alert briefly to notify you of the change in signal strength.

Stay Alert
The Stay Alert feature is designed to test a driver's alertness. Within 30 to 60 seconds after the feature is engaged an alert is sounded; to show alertness, the driver must press the volume, city or the mute button within 3-5 seconds. If a button is pressed within 3-5 seconds, the cycle is repeated. If a button was not pressed within 3-5 seconds the unit alarms at full volume and the display shows an unique visual alert.
Quiet/Auto Quiet Modes
Pressing QUIET before a signal is detected engages Auto Quiet Mode, which automatically reduces the audio level after the initial warning to a low audio level setting. Pressing QUIET during a radar/laser encounter silences audio alerts, while allowing visual alerts to keep you informed.
Alert Priority
When two or more signals are received at the same time, the alert priority is: Laser, VG-2, Speed Radar, Safety Radar.
Example: If X band is alerting, then suddenly a VG-2 signal is detected, the VG-2 warning will override the X band alert.
Vehicle Battery Saver Mode
The Vehicle Battery Saver Mode automatically shuts off your detector within 3 hours if you forget to turn it off. The timer is reset if the detector is turned off, unplugged or any button is pressed before the 6 hours have expired. The detector will alert you with an audible and visual warning before it shuts off.
Safety Warning System--SWS
This relatively new radar is not for speed detection at all, it is used to keep you informed of highway safety. Transmitters are installed and programmed (for example: in emergency vehicles) to make you aware of possible situations that may require your attention, such as: ambulance vehicles that are moving or stationary, road hazards ahead, road construction delays or detours, etc.
VG-2 Detection Mode
The VG-2, also known as a "radar detector detector," is a special receiver used by police to detect signals radiated by a radar detector. The XTR-540 alerts you its presence, and thanks to Whistler's patented VG-2 cloaking technology provides undetectability.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2010Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseI've purchased this radar detector right before a long, interstate road trip (WA, OR, CA). It was easy to set up (the manual is short, sweet and straightforward). The fact that it can either be plugged in or run on batteries is also very appealing. The only feature that I do not use is the compass, but that's only because I haven't found a spot to calibrate in yet.
All in all, this little gadget saved me from at least 5 speeding traps in one weekend! I don't really use it in the city, but for highways, I definitely recommend it.
UPDATE 7/26/2013
The radar was so great that it was stolen from my car! :( And I was more sad about it being stolen than my wallet.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2015Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseSurprisingly capable. I used it on my motorcycle over 2,700 mile round trip from florida to KY and back and it saved my bacon multiple times. I used it on battery only and it's quite sensitive to low batteries, but if they are fully charged I got around 5 or 6 hours in highway use before it started complaining. For the price it's a great deal.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2014Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseFor $60 it's a good wireless detector if you have multiple cars and don't want to drop $400 on a top-of-the-line. It worked well and picked up highway police radar a good 1/4 mile before I saw them so to me, that works. The compass feature is ok but not really necessary. If you leave the compass on, it drains the battery faster. Also, the batteries don't last long (<2hrs) if you keep the LED on "BRT-BRT" and of course if you forget to shut it off, shocker, the battery dies.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2010Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseGot this one to replace my old Whistler. When I first got the unit, the batteries included that recharged; didn't keep a charge. Called Whistler 1-800# and spoke with customer service and they told me to buy new batteries or else I would have to ship the product back and pay for return shipping just to get a new unit.
I didn't want to deal with that, so I bought new batteries. Never will I buy another Whistler radar dectector! The batteries only lasted about 2 days with battery saver mode enabled.
The compass is weak, you have to reset it all the time. I don't even use it everyday, just about 12 hours a week and this POS is already broken.
Sending it back to Whistler for warranty work, hope they fix it!
It did however work good on my road trip to Hollywood, it saved me about 5 tickets so far. The range is better with using the ac adapter then using batteries. The only reason I got this one was because it was meant to be used cordless with no wires!
Save you money and get Whistler 440 model because the compass didn't work most of the time with resetting it!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2012Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseI had a Whistler for years and liked it. Saved me many a times. I let it go when I sold my car. Due to it's great performance, I decided to stay with Whistler this time.
1.) Screen display. Old one was colored lights. Thought I'd "step up" to a readable display. Not even visible in daylight. Too small to read. Disappointing.
2.) Alert notifications. A - Sound is barely audible. If the stereo is on at all, with it's volume turned all the way up, can't hear it. B - Periscope lights are a joke. Don't work in daylight. At night very moderate.
3.) Cordless. With all the lights turned off unless there's an alert, the batteries last for about an hour. This was my main criteria for selecting this model. Hate wires. Makes installation a breeze. Allows for optimum placement without having dangling wires. This all failed miserably. Must leave it plugged in all the time. Going to try better rechargeable batteries. Shouldn't have to.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2010Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseThis new whistler is great!!! The fact that it is cordless makes it universal from car to motorcycle. It's charger works very well when plugged in to a power point for a short time. The XTR-540 lasts a whole week on one charge on my work commute, (approx 12 hours). Since my commute is 45 minutes to and from work, the battery saver set to 1 hour works well for me.
On the other side, this unit will detect radar alot further than the eye can see, if it alarms, you better believe it.
Buy it!!! for the money, it's the best on the market. It's better than my last $400.00 Escort that was stolen.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2012Product Packaging: Standard PackagingVerified PurchaseI bought this for my son since his car does not have an outlet to plug anything in. The batteries go quickly so I suggest using rechargable batteries for longer life span. Its been well worth the money invested.
