Designed to sit in a driveway, backyard, or any other open space, the Spalding 50-inch portable basketball system will turn your paved landscape into a jump-shooting haven. The system starts with a 50-inch acrylic backboard with a heavy-duty steel frame. The board offers the same look and feel as pro-style glass backboards, helping you shoot layups and bank shots with confidence. The Pro Slam breakaway rim, meanwhile, holds up well against the force of emphatic dunks--a must for modern hoops. And hops-challenged players will love the hoop's ExactaHeight lift system, which lets you adjust the height from 7.5 to 10 feet in 6-inch increments. Other features include a two-wheel, 34-gallon base that fills with sand or water for maximum stability and safety; a front cover that acts as a built-in rebounder during play; and a three-piece, 3.5-inch-diameter round pole.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2012Got this set for my children as a Christmas present. Yes it does take a while to assemble, about 3 1/2 hours for me and my wife; yes some of holes are a tight fit, overspray of the plastic coating on the metal; and yes some of the parts have difficulty lining up, help prove more rigidity in the finish basketball goal. All these were concerns when I purchased and began assembling. Now that I'm finished, I don't think I could have made a better purchase, except for a two pole supported basketball goal planted six to eight feet into the ground. The instructions are easy to follow. As for the tightness of the holes, the instructions say to check the fit before assembling. The problem with stuff not lining up easily, make sure all parts are oriented in the proper position(yea, I made a few of those mistakes too.) Attaching the backboard was the most difficult part; but once it was in, I knew my son would no longer be able to just throw the ball against the backboard and have it just fall into the net(our old goal). The height adjustablity is a breeze(to quote my wife.) Overall, an excellent buy for anyone who loves the game or wants to improve their game.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2014Arrived fast but missing a good deal of screws/nuts. it was packed missing a whole blister pack of related parts. It also had an extra blister pack of identical parts so I have double amounts for a lot of the small parts, must of been a monday pack job. Called Spalding next day (8-5 business hours only) to get missing parts, they were responsive and promised 2 days to deliver. Update: parts took 4 days, all parts delivered. Assembly was somewhat challenging but manageable. Manual says sand or water filled base but it is definitely designed for water. Small fill hole, wheels only support an empty base. The wheels broke once base was filled and hoop was moved. I chose the sand fill and it was a nightmare, the base had to be upended for the sand to flow and you have to make a fill rig since the tiny hole is vertical in the upended position. Overall the goal is a good value and would be great if it was moved into final position and then filled with water, however just expect much more trouble if you want a sand filled base.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2014My family and I have enjoyed playing basketball in the driveway with this hoop and in that regard the hoop has fulfilled it's intended purpose HOWEVER I can honestly say that had I listened more to the critical reviews and known what I know now upfront then I would NOT have made this purchase. Here are some tips to help you if you are considering buying this hoop...
1) THE SET-UP: this is the biggest con. Listen to the other reviewers when they say it takes 3-6 hours+ to put this together. It has nothing to be with being Mr Handyman or how much you know about tools, it's all about the quality (or lack of it) regarding the materials you are given to work with, the lack of clear instructions, and the poor machining of the pieces. Let me give you a few examples:
a) there are approx 100 nuts/bolts/screws in the kit but none of the bags they come in are labelled and the only way to figure out what screw you need for a specific instruction step is to try to match the screw to the picture in the manual. SInce a number of the screws look the same and are similar lengths it's sometimes guesswork and you have to hope for the best. THis process ultimately eats up so much of your time and I would say it adds about an hour to the process. Had Spalding simply labelled the screws in their bags/boxes it would have been much easier
b) whenever you have to work with the pieces which are painted black you'll quickly discover that the manufacturer unfortunately also painted the screw holes too! I wish I had discovered/known this sooner because I would have stopped/returned the hoop immediately but you don't actually find this out till you are about 70% into the job and then you have no choice but to forge on. WHich means we basically had to use a knive to cut away the paint from the screwholes - it sucks. I recall that this was especially difficult when you are at the stage near the very end and you are putting on the board pads to line the bottom of the backboard. All 5 of these holes were painted over but by now the board is up and you need to be on a ladder to scrape those holes out - not fun
c) attaching the springs was very difficult and I would say kind of dangerous. The springs just would not stretch easily and I had to keeping pulling/relaxing them a number of times to get them to attach
d) MUST-HAVE Tools - socket wrench, ladder, rubber mallet/hammer, screwdriver, wrench, sawhorse and 2 people. You really do need two people for multiple steps - even with a saw horse this monster is just so big and awkward that you need one person to balance it while you work on it
e) Be very careful when after you attach the backboard to the pole/bottom and then go to set it upright. It's really heavy and unbalanced. It took me a few attempts because every time I got to a certain point I felt like it would come crashing down to the side. Finally I just closed my eyes, hoped for the best, and pushed forward - luckily it worked.
f) Overall it took us about 5-6 hours over the course of 2 days to set-up. I nearly gave up in frustration on 3 separate occasions. I would opt to put together a 1000 different IKEA items before attempting this again. Needless to say this is a 100+ swear construction job.
2) ADJUSTABLE Easiness: I chose this hoop because it seemed like it would be easy to adjust. I do NOT find this to be the case. The adjustable arm is a bit chintzy to me and seems like it will wear out in a few years (or sooner if you adjust it a lot). Again lack of quality.
a) It adjusts from 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9. 9.5 and 10 feet.
3) PORTABILITY: there are wheels on the front of the base only. To move this with the wheels you must tip it forward and hold onto the pole and then push forward into the position you want. You can really only do this if it is NOT filled with water/sand. Once you fill it, I can't see that you can move this with the wheels. In addition, the wheel axles are held in place with just a metal cap on each side like a child's riding car toy. One of the caps on our axle keeps falling off no matter how hard you pound it back.
a) You MUST fill this with water or sand. It's too top heavy to use otherwise and with any kind of wind I would fear it falling over. But again, once you fill it, then you can't really move it with the wheels. At that point the only way to move it is to push the base and slide it around.
b) Even when it is filled I would not trust this outside in a big windstorm - I think it would still fall over
4) LOOKS: it does look nice
5) ACRYLIC BACKBOARD: we bought the acrylic for the 'softer' sound on the backboard. that feature is true and does work
6) BREAKAWAY RIM: I have yet to try that out. Knowing what I know about the lack of quality in the materials I am actually afraid that if you pull on the rim the whole backboard would come down.
7) NUISANCE: I do not understand why they designed the base with upright pole so far back and supported by a diagonal front panel. It does look cooler than some of the other hoops that have the upright pole near front of the base but in fact that diagonal front panel creates a serious nuisance - whenever the ball hits it on a swish shot from straight on (think free throw) the ball goes through the hoop, hits that front panel, and then goes flying off in any direction. Very annoying!
BOTTOM LINE: Had I known all this upfront I would not have purchased this. If you do buy it just know what you are getting in to regarding that construction time, etc.

UPDATE Jun 2018
This metal on this hoop has rusted at the joints, the plastic has cracked in multiple places, and the base has a hole in it such that is no longer holds water. In short this hoop has been a big disappointment.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2014This looks great once it is up, but getting it to that stage was quite a saga. Also, one piece, (the bottom edge of the bounce off board, arrived broken). I decided not to return it, though, because repacking it and returning this huge thing would have been massively difficult.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2014Have had it for two weeks. Was not the easiest to put together but not bad. Very sturdy and we'll made. The backboard size is great.
