- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2014I purchased this item because one that I had owned for SEVERAL years broke. The spindle that held the blade broke. I was very pleased with the old one and wanted the same brand to replace it. I like it because it sits out of the way and does a fine job for small jobs. I do not need the coffee grinder so I cannot evaluate that aspect. This does a great job of chopping small amounts and allows my Kitchen Aid to stay out of the way until I need a large amount done. I love it and would purchase it again it this one breaks.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2010I just got this to match my Spacemaker Coffeemaker and Toaster oven. It works great - does a fast thorough job. I love the options on the coffee grinder for type of grind and size of coffee bean batch. I ground a three pound bag of coffee very quickly. I have one of those generic coffee grinders and it doesn't work nearly as well - I probably got done in half the time with this unit. I also chopped carrots to add to soup broth and it did a quick and thorough job. (I replaced the KitchenAid 3 cup grinder/chopper that is almost new, but has issues with the safety lock mechanism.)
One thing I would wish for if this could change - on the coffee grinder jar, I wish that the arrow to lock the jar in position was a brighter color, but maybe as I use it more I'll get quicker at lining it up. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 2, 2012I haven't been impressed with the quality of Black & Decker products for quite some time. Many of their designs are nice and the idea of under-counter grinding and chopping is great, especially since it fits so nicely with the matching coffee maker which (so far) has performed flawlessly.
Pros: concept, styling, cord management, installation
Negatives: everything else. first of all, even brand new the coffee bean grinder doesnt't grind even as well as a basic handheld grinder given twice the time to achieve the same fine grind. Most people grinding their own coffee prefer a fine grind, otherwise you have to use twice the beans to achieve a strong brew. Even when set on the highest settings, you need to run the grind cycle twice to get good results. This means a solid 90 plus seconds of a very loud, resonant drone that fills the entire house. If the snooze alarm didnt do the trick, this grinder will definitely stir any slumbering cohabitants.
This unit does not remember the grinder settings. It always resets to the lowest. This means a whole lot of button pressing every time you grind, and in my case since i need to run the cycle twice it can get pretty tedious.
My best guess as to why the chopper is so slow: i have compared the blades on this chopper to those on my very old KRUPS handheld grinder. The Krups has a relatively sharp cutting edge on the front side of the blade as one would expect. On the B&D grinder, there is no sharpened edge, it is simply a stamped piece of metal spinning.
The above problems would have been acceptable if not desirable if only the grinder base lasted more than a few months. it took all of 2 weeks for the first cracks to appear around the base of the container (photos attached). There is a saucer-shaped piece of metal that is molded into the plastic, presumably as an attempt to strengthen it, however I believe this metal piece is creating the cracks by expanding and contracting at different rates than the plastic used. There is no indication what type of plastic was used, but I suspect it is an acrylic when an ABS plastic would have been more appropriate for this type of part.
Eventually, the base failed where the grinder connects with it 4 months after purchase(another photo shows this). This is from daily use, however my KRUPS grinder has been working flawlessly now for almost 20 years with similar usage levels. I have not yet attempted to deal with the warrantee, however I have no reason to believe that a replacement part would fair any better unless totally redesigned, so why bother? Back to the KRUPS!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2014I have been using this coffee grinder for grinding grains and spices and using the food processor attachment to chop veggies. it works well enough just make sure to put small portions each time as to not overload the machine. I can not speak on the spacmaking ability as I have not hung the unit up rather I hold it in my hand.
however, one of the cups has broken and I am in the process of trying to get it replaced.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2012I owned the white, one button version of this item--Black and Decker Spacemaker Chopper and Grinder - White, and it is one of my favorite appliances. I probably used it two to three times per week for 5 years. I never had any mechanical problems. After about 4 years the grinder attachment showed some cracks but was still usable. The chopper attachment shows etching wear and tear but is still perfectly intact. Our family moved and I brought it to the new house and asked my husband to find some replacement attachments because I knew they would eventually crack and be unusable. Instead he bought me the whole thing in black this time to match my kitchen. It was cheaper that way. The black one here is just as great. For those of you reading the reviews that mention the chopper/grinder bowls cracking and are afraid to buy, THIS IS VITALLY IMPORTANT: DO NOT PUT THEM IN THE DISHWASHER TO CLEAN. THE ABRASIVES IN DISHWASHER DETERGENT ETCH THE PLASTIC AND MAKE IT SUSCEPTIBLE TO CRACKING. The reason my grinder bowl went first was because my mom used it to grind her coffee and then she would put it in the dishwasher...sometimes I caught it before it went through. Also make sure to "chop" a cup of water in it to clean it after each use. It can be a chore to clean otherwise (garlic is the worst!). Highly recommended.
