A Little Background Information
MXL condenser microphones use what is known as a cardioid pickup pattern, which is more sensitive to sound waves arriving at the front of the microphone as opposed to those arriving from the sides or rear. Unlike other MXL® models, this microphone benefits from being a USB (Universal Serial Bus) device--meaning this is a plug and play microphone that will interface with Windows and Macintosh computers without the need for any special drivers. As a USB device, it carries the added benefit of not requiring an external microphone preamp, as is the case with most condenser microphones.
Unlike microphones designed for live performance or lesser dynamic model microphones, this instrument requires careful handling.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2010We bought this "MXL Studio1-USB Recording Kit" for use in our small business making instructional videos. We have a Blue Microphones Snowball USB Microphone (White) we use in our shop studio, but wanted a smaller mic that was easy to transport for use on remote shoots. Here are my observations:
Pros -
* Good Voice Quality; cleanly captures spoken voices
* Good Physical Quality; this is beefy mic that feels very well made
* Looks Professional; while not important to the functionality, it makes a good impression on our customers
* Long USB Cord; allows for placement away from PC
* Headphone Jack; not a "real time monitor", but still handy to listen to playback
* Travels Well; includes a protective travel case that fits all of components and MXL WS-001 Foam Windscreen
Cons -
* No Windscreen Included; normally I wouldn't mention this but the instructions include a warning the condenser mics are susceptible to water damage (like for breath moisture) and a windscreen is "essential". We bought the one linked above.
* Weak Stand; the included stand is somewhat anemic for the size of the mic, I will likely replace it in the near future with a "shock mount"
Misc -
* Since we do not do music recording of any type, I can't comment on the mic's performance in that area
The MXL Studio-1 mic more than meets our needs (which may be different from yours) and we were lucky to catch it on a Gold Box "Lightning Deal", so think it was also a good value.
Recommended!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 8, 2013I do a lot of guitar work using adobe audition..
while the microphone showed up when i searched for a STEREO usb mic (not sure how that happened)
i didnt read the reviews carefully enough..
Pro's - long usb cable is nice to place next to the amp.
- for mono its sound quality is ok Not bad actually
cons -
Mono only
Will pick up a lot of low bass rumble (even with the stand on a carpet) 6 feet away from my speakers.
So overall - i wouldnt buy this mic again..
For a musician or a serious recording artist
it just doesnt make the grade.
I didnt even bother with the headset out feature as i was having sound issues with it already
and didnt want to over tax its capabilities.
So i paid way too much - for too litle of a mic
and now i am shopping again..
Its nice for karaoke or my wife singing.
But for serious work
Get a different mic
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2011I bought this product hoping to create nice quality sound on my Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard. Because the description said that it could run on Mac. But after reading the comments I found out that this microphone does not work on Snow Leopard or Leopard. I then decided to use it on my PC that I rarely use. And when I recorded sound. It made a hissing and popping noise even though I was three feet away. I then tried to email customer support. But I sent them an email 2 weeks ago and they haven't replied.
Do not buy this product. It is a waste of money and time.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2010Nice solid feeling microphone, but would not appear as a sound input choice in 5 different Macintosh MacBook Pro (including unibodies) computers when plugged into USB port. Console error logs showed that the device could not be enumerated by the OSX USB family software. So, this mike is unusable under OSX.
It does show up on a HP Touchsmart, but for Mac users, this seems to be a problematic choice of microphone
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2009This microphone is as described, and I highly recommend it for the home-studio enthusiast. It was completely "plug & play" on my XP laptop and I was recording immediately with no hang-ups or need for extra hardware drivers. The mic picks up high and low frequencies nicely, but I recommend buying a windscreen to cut down on "P- pops." The carrying case is durable and the foam inlay protects all the components in seperate compartments. A well-designed package, overall.MXL Studio 1 USB Microphone with Headohone Jack, Desktop Stand, USB Cable, and Carrying Case
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2015It's a great microphone, but might be a bit hot. I wouldn't say it's not all that portable with the fine tuning it needs to make it sound decent, but works wonders when your using it for only one purpose. Again, it's very hot, even adjusting the volume down to 1%. I would have rated it lower, but found that you can record through the monitor jack, which means it could record conversations through the headset via Skype or other communications software, which saves the trouble of setting up Virtual Audio Cable, or other solutions.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2010This microphone is very easy to use (just plug and go!). Some of the extras that come with it are not the greatest including the desktop stand which is pretty cheap and so small that it isn't even that practical. The microphone itself, though, works fine and is worth it for the money if you aren't looking to record at a very high level. I used it to record voice overs for a play and it worked just fine.
