This is a great item so far. I purchased it the Monday before Christmas and it arrived 4 days later. So that was awesome! Now as far as the product review. I purchased it for my 2 1/2 year old daughter. Yes it shows that it's for 4 and up but some of the reviews I read indicated a tech savvy 2 year old could handle it, which she is so figured we were good. However, after observing my daughter play with it, I am not sure a 2 1/2 year old is ready for this toy, although she does love it. She carries it around with the attached stylus so that makes me nervous. She also turns it off when she gets frustrated with it not doing what she thinks it should do. So she is constantly turning it off and back on. She has also taken out the Dora game she received as a Christmas gift to go with this and we cannot find it! My fault for not watching her closely. It happened while I was out and my husband was on watch duty. I know it will turn up. Registering it online was easy. I did download a free e-book for her and a sample of the Mr. Pencil game. This game requires the child to use the stylus to trace shapes and choose the right color and "color" a picture. She is doing so-so on this but prefers that I do it and she watch. The e-book is interactive. She watched/listened while I operated it. You have to tap on the different characters to get them to talk. You basically just tap on any of the pictures and they will say something. She can sign-in on her own, she just chooses her name and it has a star by it so I told her to tap on the star and she can do that just fine with no help. That's as far as we have gotten with this toy. It has the same cheap, generic AA batteries I put in on Christmas day and they are still running. She doesn't play with this game daily though and it only keeps her attention for about 15 min each time she does. So at this rate, I think we'll get a little more battery life than an older child. We have another game, Tinkerbell, that was a gift but I'm not allowing her to open yet, not until we find the missing Dora game. As far as the Dora game, she likes it a lot but I'm not real sure she knows what she is doing. I think at 3 years old, she will do a lot better with it.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and it has been wonderful. I had read many reviews a head of time so I knew that I needed to download the handheld to the computer to get everything ready so that she could play with it as soon as so opened. (This did not take very long but we also have the Leapfrog Tag reader..which is also a fabulous product.) For her free download I chose the Dinsour book, and I thought that was a good choice for our daughter. We also bought games Pet Pals 2, Mr. Pencil, Spongebob, and the Dinsour game. Her favorite games are the Pet Pals, then the Mr. Pencil game (we had to download the additional app for Mr. Pencil so she coudl explorer more areas). It has been amazing how much she as learned from all the games, especially the names of several dinosaurs. Spongebob had been okay for her, she just does not play the racing part much because she got frustrated with the stearing so fast. It has been great to keep her occupied for long car rides, and for other times we go places and she needs to sit quietly. For those occasions she wears headphone (the same we use for our MP3 players). She has been good about about not playig too long. Have not had many issues with batteries yet, as they seem to last a long time. The handheld is very durable. We did buy a carrying case and that has been great to keep it stored in along with the games. We plan to purchase the Rapunzel game and the camera for the handheld as well.

First of all, let me start by saying that we've only had this unit for a few days, but I felt the need to do a review for what I've seen so far.

I bought this for my 2.5 yr/old. I realize she may be a bit young for this, but she's been obsessed with my iphone for the past few months (it's the only way to allow us to eat a decent dinner or to keep her happy for my drive home each day); but a phone is a phone, and she would sometimes make unexpected calls or move my icons around, so I finally decided she needs to get her own gaming system instead of playing w/the games on my phone.

On to the review:

--this unit is a bit thick and heavy to lug around. Since I need it to keep her happy in the car and in restaraunts, I would have to carry it in my purse everywhere we go, which means I can no longer carry a small purse.

--I read all the warnings from other reviews about plugging this to the computer, and I thought I'm savvy enough to bypass it...unfortunately, I fell victim as well...spent 3+ hours on it, went pass midnight, tried it on BOTH computers at home, and STILL this thing would NOT connect!! I kept getting the following errors:

1) can't detect/find your unit
2) you've been disconnected

I googled for answers, tried doing a tune up, turned off all firewalls, turned off all anti-virus - still to no avail

I have window 7 on one machine, and xp on another - same errors on both

finally took it to my parents house the next day, tried it on their computer, which runs on vista, got the same error, but somehow it did finish the tune up (which upgrades the hardware), and then the Leapster Connect App connected to the unit!! I was so excited, I actually jumped up and down and did a dance...

--Then I noticed you can't really download anything unless you have a leaplet code; the unit itself came with one free leaplet code, so I was able to download ONE thing..I had to pick and choose on what I think my kid really needed...finally settled on an e-book;

when I ordered the unit I didn't quite understand what leaplets were, but I went ahead and bought 2 anyways, which didn't arrive in the same shipment; so now I have 2 more leaplets to use...will have to decide what to get next...I now understand why people are complaining this thing can eat up a lot of money since one leaplet allows only 1 download of 1 item.

--I also bought the charger as I read it can eat up a lot of batteries as well. my thought on this is, the rechargable battery should have came with the unit (it came with the charger instead); why make us buy it separately and now what do we do with the part that holds the regular batteries?

--screen is clear, but a bit small, if the kids are going to be watching videos off of it...

--sound is ok;

--I like how the pen is attached to the unit via a cord so the chances of losing it is small...

will update later if I see any other issues.

so far so good. My 2.5 yr old is able to figure out the different buttons, she likes the built-in pet app and laughs hysterically when the cat meows.

I also bought the clickstart wireless keyboard system as well; will be doing a review on that also...

5.0 out of 5 stars good value for money

I brought this for my daughter for her fifth birthday she had originally wanted a Nintendo ds but after playing with a leap star at one of her friends houses she decided she liked this and how glad was i as it is a real bargain. it is also i think a lot more educational than a ds and more for her age range i would really recommend it to anybody with a child 4 years upwards rather than pay out a fortune for a more expensive console as there are a wide variety of games available and hrs of fun and peace and quiet for us a real must have product

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't get my daughter away from it!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 7, 2011
My daughter asked for a Nintendo DS for Christmas (she is 5!) and not really knowing much about them I enquired as to what it was. Realising that they were rather pricey and also I don't like the idea of computer games very much, I decided to look around to see what other things similar were available. I first came across the leapster 2 and thought it would be a good substitute as it has eduational value. However after reading reviews I decided to spend the extra money and buy the Leapster Explorer as I hope this will last longer (age wise!). I must say I am very pleased so far. My daughter will not put it down and we have had to give her a time period when she can use it! She recieved a couple of games with it aswell as the free leaplet that comes with the console. She did need a little encouraging to start with as she couldn't quite get the hang of what she was supposed to do but has now already completed the games. Its also great for in the car. My nearly 4 year old son also likes it and has a little go with it although I wonder if its slightly too old for him at the mo. I feel that this does have eduactional value and would far rather my children have one of these than a DS anyday!

Since buying this, my child plays it constantly. It is a good learning tool and does make her think. If I could have any criticism, it would be that sometimes the stylus pen does not exactly line up with the mark on the screen which makes it difficult to trace lines etc. on some areas but otherwise this is a good purchase.

We bought this for my daughter's third birthday after she'd been playing on her elder brother's Leappad. She loves it! She calls it her DS! It's great for taking out with us to keep her occupied in the car, or while we're waiting for food in a restaurant. The only problem I have had is it won't connect to my laptop (not a major issue for us because it will link to my husband's) and I just cannot figure out what the problem is. But all in all, a fantastic little gadget!

5.0 out of 5 stars fab leapster product
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 9, 2012
The leapster has been a great learning tool for my 5 year old, very easy to use and naviagte round. Like that you can put parental controls on to it and that when you log in to computer you can see the progress they are making. The games have good instructions and with a narrators voice makes it truley interactive. would be nice if the games were cheaper would make me want to but more of them.

Thanks overall a great product.
