The size receives mixed feedback - while some say it fits nicely under desks, others note the bin is quite small. Never Worked Well, Gave Out Completely After A Year
Updated 15 Months After Purchase: Here is a photo of what some of our shreds have looked like since almost day one. Not all of them, just some every once in a while. The info says it can handle up to 8 pages at a time but I limit myself to 3. Sometimes a stack of 3 cuts and sometimes, like this pic, it doesn't. Now the machine is actually broken. It will not even pull paper in anymore, but that's okay because it wasn't cutting much anyway. We've tossed it in the bin. I'm glad because this gives me a good excuse to buy one for $30 that's a cross cut shredder. Even if the new one works well for 6 months, it will be worth far more than this one ever was! Original Post: We've had this shredder for almost a year now, and it's still functioning, but I've never been a fan of it. First of all, it's only a strip-cut shredder, not a cross-cut shredder. My husband picked this out, but he had assured me that he was selecting one that was cross cut. Can't blame the machine for user error, true, but I regret having just a strip cut. When I empty the paper, every time I think to myself, looking at the remains, "Yeah, that's not protecting us from anything. There's all the information, right there, but with little cuts vaguely separating the information." It doesn't particularly cut well, either, so there's all our bank numbers, etc, just sitting right there, with strip marks cut into them. How does that stop anybody from seeing the information??? The other gripe I have with this machine may be common to all shredders. Never had one before. But when it gets full, or close to full, it will not refuse to operate, like might be more helpful. There's no little light to indicate that it's full. What it does is keeps running the engine, spinning and spinning and spinning. So, to shred with this machine, without stopping to look every time to see how much paper is in the bin, you really have to stand there and wait for it to shred and finish shredding, because if you walk away, it may continue running and do what, I wonder? Burn out the motor? I've waited before to see if it'd stop running and it never has. I have to manually switch it off. So, with this machine, you can't shred and walk away. You have to stand there and wait for it to stop, to make sure it will stop. I give it 3 stars because it does operate. And has for almost a year. But wish I had something much, much better!

I used to utilize my pinking shears to shred papers and receipts but when I was cleaning out the room that is being used as a personal office, I found three boxes of receipts, college papers, invoices, and other stuff that would take me a while to shred by hand. I figured that hand-shredding has it's place for little jobs, but I really needed an electronic shredder for bigger work.

A shredder is really necessary these days. I've read articles that state that anything with even a partial account number needs to be shredded or it's more likely that the security of your personal accounts can be easily compromised.

Seeing that this was priced well, and had great reviews, I decided to buy it.

Would NOT recommend this for a business. It's not meant to take a lot of big jobs and has a max of 8 sheets. The max I put in there was 4, but I wouldn't put 8 in there. Seems like that's pushing it too far.

It's small, but it's a powerhouse and a workhorse. It went through two boxes of papers in less than an hour. I still have another box to do yet.

It sure takes a lot of manual work out of things. It does need to be emptied often, so have a couple of paper bags at the ready to dump the container into so you can move on with shredding more documents.

If you have small receipts, sometimes they feed in at an angle that won't activate the auto shred action, so a larger piece of paper after it will ensure the entire strip of paper gets cut up.

I had no problems with using it, shredding a couple of outdated plastic insurance cards, and emptying it. It's easy to use and simple to store.

It's loud, but it's doing a lot of work, so not a problem.

Would definitely buy this again and would definitely recommend it to others who need a small, home-use shredder.

The AmazonBasics 8-Sheet Strip-Cut Paper/CD/Credit Card Shredder came in a plain Amazon box, with the typical smiley-face logo on the side, with a large white section over the top of the box that told me entirely what it was. Upon opening it up, I noticed that the individual sections (the shredder itself, and the bin) were both wrapped up in a plastic sheet. Upon my inspection of the product, I also noticed a white paper that told me “As part of AmazonBasics quality inspections, we test every shredder before shipping it. Because of this, you may see paper shreds in the bin from the testing.” The bin was clean, and the shredder was a sliver of debris from the testing section, which I didn’t mind.

Following the instructions, I placed the shredder into the bin. I noticed that there was a small cutout section on the top of the bin. Placing the shredder onto the bin, the cord that came out of the back of the shredder fit in there, to stabilize the shredder inside the bin.

The shredder mulches through paper rather well. It has a maximum of 8 sheets at a time, though I doubt that in my initial run, nine or ten sheets may have gone through at a time. The lower motor sounds indicate if the shredder is overtasked. As I shredded a good deal of papers (old tax forms, endless junk mail from CitiBank, old college homework that has since become obsolete), I was able to tell the device was running as intended. As the bin became full, the motor would not turn off after it had finished shredding. This was due to the amount of shredding already in the bin, pushing up the shredding through the blades, to keep the activation switch in the blades continuing. I would need to turn it off, and pull out various, already shredded sheets of paper. Pulling the paper out was no issue. The bin would be emptied, and the process began anew.

The shredder itself would become warm, as all machines do after continuous use, but never felt like it was overheating, even after a good hour of prolonged use. The instruction manual informed me that it can shred small paper clips and staples, though it was recommended that you remove paper clips whenever possible to extend the lifespan of the device. I never use paper clips, so this was a non-issue.

Lastly, I shredded one blank CD. I followed the instructions, setting the CD in the slot, turning the machine on, and holding down the CD Destroyer button, and away the CD went, being separated into four pieces.

Product seems to run flawlessly so long as the bin is cleaned every now and then.

We have had this shredder for about 2 weeks. It works fine. We have shredded credit cards with no problem. When feeding 1-4 sheets of paper the machine handles the load easily. I have not tried 8 sheets since I believe that putting maximum loads on small electric motors risks burning them out. As well, using maximum loads slows the rate of shredding.

We use the 'automatic' start feature and that is not only convenient, it works well, eliminating the need to turn the machine on each time you want to shred something.

The shredder is small and fits under a desk easily.

While it is not a cross-cut shredder, I think for most purposes it provides sufficient security for home use.
For business purposes a cross cut might be better. As to the possibility of putting the 1/4" strips back together, I think that is minimized by tearing paper in half and shredding each half in a different direction-one vertical, one horizontal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective office shredder

I am very satisfied with this purchase because I was looking for a small, easy to use and relatively affordable shredder to use in my home office.
I have a lot of more confidential prints (about 6 to 20 every week) that need to be discarded compared to the regular household. Therefore this small shredder helped a lot on discard all of them quickly without spending me 60 to 100 dollars. It has all the functions that can easily help you deal with your confidential prints easily.
I really can't find any cons for my small office use but I can see it being too small and too slow for a larger office. It also looks very bland but you pay what you get.

This works pretty well. For more security, you may want to get the cross shredder. Sometimes the strip that gets left is exactly your name. The first time I used this I wanted to get rid of years of bills and other documents that were old. It took me about an hour. I sometimes tried to put a couple extra papers on, and it got stuck. Sometimes putting one through is enough to push the others through. Other times I reversed it so they came back up. The rest is easy to pull out. It only happens if you put too much in. The bin isn't huge. It is great for regular use. If you are shredding large quantities then you need a bag handy to empty it often. The lid just sits on the top. It does have some pieces that go down so the lid won't must fall off. I was a little suprised by the lid style, but that isn't an issue. It makes it lighter when you have to dump it. Works well for home use. I would get the cross shredder for office use to keep things more confidential.

Works well. I only need it on occasion, for shredding old tax forms and some bills, so for me, this is a perfect and inexpensive shredder. The shredder fits over the waste basket that comes with it but also fits over pretty much all waste baskets. Good product.
