Bolstered by the success of 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, the Resident Evil movies and the hit remake of his own Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented with Land of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985's Day of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classic Night of the Living Dead: Zombies (also known as "stenches" for their rotting odor) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter of Suspiria director Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired, Land of the Dead benefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie, Land of the Dead delivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along. --Jeff Shannon

- Reviewed in the United States on November 16, 2024“Land of the Dead” isn’t the best film Romero made in his “Dead” films but it has enough striking and interesting to make it worthwhile. After the success of the remake of his classic “Dawn of the Dead”, Romero’s project was greenlit and he was given a decent budget to work with on a Hollywood production.
Set in the world built in the aftermath of “Day of the Dead”, the film focuses on a community filled with shortages but the usual elite living the highlife. Pittsburg has become a feudal king of sorts with Paul Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) the de facto king. When a disaffected employee Cholo (John Leguizamo) threatens to use the armored personnel carrier Dead Reckoning to destroy the city if Kaufman doesn’t pay him for his work, the designer and commander of the vehicle Riley (Simon Baker pre- “The Mentalist”) is sent to retrieve his vehicle and stop his second-in-command Cholo and, perhaps, return justice to a city that has lost it. The vehicle has been used to reclaim areas overrun with the dead. The problem is that the dead appear to have some rudimentary intelligence and are no longer roving munchers.
Aside from an underdeveloped character for. Asker to play, this is a fun flick. It isn’t essential but it’s got some fine performances along with some great set pieces.
The three disc set features the uncut version of the film in 4k along with the original theatrical cut on Blu-ray (remastered) and the uncut on Blu-ray as well (remastered). All of the extras are largely on the Blu-ray.
The 4 K looks very nice from Shout Factory. The film was shot on film with effects finished in 2K. Those sequences are upscaled but the rest of the film has been rescanned from the original negative and, as such, is in native 4K. Blacks are well handled here, detail is improved and the HDR color pass adds to the look of the film. The blu-ray has also been upgraded from the same transfer.
Audio sounds quite good with an Atmos mix, 5.1 and stereo mix. Subtitles are in English.
Special features include two commentary tracks on the 4k. There are a number of featurettes on the unrated Blu-ray and interviews plus deleted scenes on the theatrical cut.
This is a terrific release for the final part of Romero’s final film in the Dead films. It wasn’t exactly planned (in fact, elements of this story were scaled back but originally intended for the lower budget “Day of the Dead”).
- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2017This is one of the best Zombie films I have seen. Then again I liked Romero's Day of the Dead and thought that Diary was pretty good too. I rewatched Romero's Dawn of the Dead and couldn't see what I saw it in many years ago.
This one has good action and acting. Dennis Hopper is a trip in any role. The idea that the zombies are learning was kind of funny, but there was enough tension to make it interesting. A few of the deaths were scary and hilarious at the same time. I also liked the rivalry going on between the hero and anti hero.
This film makes my shortlist of great zombie films. If you liked any of these you will like this.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2024If u love zombies this movie is for u! Awesome!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2013The star rating is for the movie itself, not the disc.. The Land of the Dead [Unrated] Blu Ray is yet another example of how greedy these companies are..getting us to upgrade our existing collections by using incorrect information or omitting special features (for whatever reason(s)), forcing us true collectors to keep both the DVD and Blu ray versions.. Many of the special features that were on the DVD are NOT on the Blu Ray..Did they maybe add additional features to compensate? NO.. Fox is pretty bad, but Universal is the worst that I've seen: i.e. "The Thing" - only a commentary that was lifted from a laserdisc version - all of the special features from the collector's edition DVD set are absent, "Casino" - half of the special features on the re mastered 2 Disc DVD - not included, & and now this... and these discoveries were all in a single day of purchases....But "Land of the Dead" is a true Romero Classic..

5.0 out of 5 stars Gelungener Zombiefilm, ungeschnitten
Handlung:
Fazit:
