    Fantastic Expansion

    Fantastic Expansion
I have played the vast majority of the dominion expansions and this one is one of my favorites. Many of the expansions have new cards but don’t change the dynamics much. This expansion lengthens the game and focuses the gameplay on economy. Prosperity adds Colonies that cost 11 coin and end the game when all are bought rather than Providences. It also adds Platinum that costs 9 coin to help you get to the higher 11 coin Colony price. If you are debating between expansions this should be one of the first you get.

We have enjoyed the original Dominion for almost a year now and decided to try an expansion. I chose prosperity because it appeared to be one of the initial expansions.

The first time we played we used the recommended setup using only cards from the Prosperity deck. Once everyone understood the new mechanics, such as the VP tokens and new treasure cards, we decided that mixing and matching the cards from the original Dominion and Prosperity would better suit our little group.

The addition of the VP tokens (I like to think that they're somewhat passive, as they come up naturally through your deck building) was an interesting touch. Every one enjoyed the VP tokens and thought, generally, that they were a boon to the game. We also very much enjoyed the new treasure cards which boasted a point value and had quasi actions associated with them.

The only negative I will say is that, thus far, we have experienced, due to the increased potential to acquire currency (copper, silver, etc...) we have had several games where the difference between the winner and the runner-up was quite extreme - say 50 or 60 VPs. This has only happened a few times and it was while we were experimenting with various deck builds, but I would imagine that some additional experience with the cards and the deck in general would reduce these discrepancies. However, I do not believe that this is a reason to avoid this expansion since overall the new cards, mechanics, and general increased dynamics of the game greatly outweigh any negatives which we have discovered thus far.

On the topics requested for rating:

Fun: Definitely more fun, when combined with the original Dominion because it allows you the opportunity to build more interesting decks
Educational value: We don't play with any small children, but every game, even every turn, is a lesson in strategy, efficiency, effectiveness, and decision making.
Durability: We do not use card sleeves, though I've considered it, but our original Dominion deck has held up quite well and I am not concerned about the durability of the Prosperity deck.
Overall: 5 stars, though I like to think that nothing's perfect, I honestly believe that this expansion is worthwhile

In short - if you're a fan of the original Dominion I would recommend this expansion.

After reading many of the excellent reviews on Amazon, I bought this as our first expansion to the original Dominion game. We love them both. This game increases the complexity and the availability of money and property (victory cards). We play this game regularly with our 7-year-old son, and he loves it. Trade Route is not our favorite part of this set, but the victory tokens and mats allow you to gain victory points without filling up your hand with them. There are a couple cards that you need to read very carefully to understand how they work, including Watchtower (which gives you one benefit if you play it and another if you show it from your hand), King's Court (which, if played on another King's court, allows you to play 3 different cards each 3 times, not one card 9 times), and Goons (which, with all the actions, can be easy to forget to collect your victory tokens). The treasure cards that do more than just buy things are great too. This game makes you think more and provides fun twists. There are also ways to get around certain restrictions listed on other cards by playing them in combination. This was a great first expansion for us, but now we want more! Seaside should be arriving later this week.

I would recommend this set for patient, thoughtful kids who are strong readers of any age. My son learned to play Dominion at age 6, despite the 14+ age recommendation. There is nothing inappropriate for kids, unless you dig deeply into the meanings of the cards (which is not necessary). But, that could also lead to a great history lesson/discussion...

The Dominion series is one of the best games I've ever played and I'm not just talking deck building games. It has spectacular re-playability because of nearly endless options, strategies, and combos yet Dominion is easy to learn and fun to play. 99% of what you need to know is clearly written right on each card. The expansions, such as Prosperity, really add a lot of new options and fun twists on the original game. All of the expansions are very appropriately titled. Prosperity is all about extreme wealth. If you like lots of points and lots of treasure Prosperity is great. The opposite expansion set is Dominion: Dark Ages in which you start out "in the dark ages" with little wealth and must build your way out of poverty. You will find that many games sell expansions simply to continue sales and the expansion packs just add more quantity but don't actually expand or enrich game play at all. Not so with Dominion. All of the Dominion expansions add many new dimensions and options to game play and take strategies in entirely new directions. I have yet to be let down by any Dominion set. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT YOU MUST OWN A BASE SET BEFORE BUYING AN EXPANSION. The expansions do not come with the base cards and are not playable without them so if the Dominion set you are looking at buying says "Expansion" you must first buy a base set. This is clearly stated on all expansion boxes. The base card set comes in the original "Dominion" game or you can buy the Dominion Base Cards set separately.

You must have the base dominion set to play this. That being said, we *always* play with this set now. It introduced platinum (gives you 5 coins, 9 to buy the card) and colonies (gives you 10 points, 11 to buy the cards). We like these features so much that we always use them - the object now is to buy the colonies first, and there is usually a rush to get platinum, which, unlike gold, is limited to 12 cards per game. There are also awesome cards that come with the box. Not as epic as the Seaside cards, but it still has good cards. Avoid bishop in most games! Grand Market is awesome, King's Court is awesome but risky, Peddler is fun, Forge and Expand are useful, City and Quarry can be fun if used well.
