- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2011Platform For Display: Nintendo WiiVerified PurchaseI know there were apparently some problems with this game when it first came out that may have brought down the overall rating some so I wanted to write a review to help boost it back up. First I want to say that I had nearly no problems playing through to 100%. I think I had it freeze up twice where I had to unplug the Wii to get going again. Sure, it is a bit inconvenient but, in my opinion, doesn't take away from the overall game at all.
Secondly, this is just a great game. I do not play the Wii a lot but when I get LEGO Harry potter in (this goes for the first one as well) I have a hard time walking away. It's just plain fun, especially if you are a fan of the books/movies. I'm more a fan of puzzle-type games but don't want to spend a lot of time on video games so I love solving the simple puzzles to move on to the next part and searching around for collectibles. I love all the different satisfying sounds as you pick things up and the little celebratory music when you save a Student in Peril--it's these little things that make it enjoyable.
In comparison to the first game it's about even. Some things are better--new spells (aguamente is my favorite), more interesting dueling (although that gets a little old after awhile), new capabilities for characters like Arthur Weasley, and directional arrows that shows you where to go in order to use something you've picked up--among others, I'm sure. I've started playing the first one again because I never got completely through it due to the infamous glitches involved, and I notice a few things here and there where I think "I miss that in the new one" but I can't even think of them now so it's obviously not much of a loss. I'm not big on graphics so they are probably better but aren't a big deal to me. What I did notice is that everything seems much darker and I found myself turning the brightness up on my TV just to see what I was doing in some areas (of course I don't have the best or biggest TV so that could be a factor). Obviously, the cutscreens are a lot of fun but can be skipped the second time around if you just want to get on with the game.
I wouldn't think twice about recommending or buying this for anyone who is into HP and probably even if they're not--I can't really speak to that because I'm a huge fan. My biggest thing is don't let the horror stories of glitches scare you away--the worst has obviously been fixed and any little leftovers are tiny in comparison to the overall quality of the game.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2011Platform For Display: Nintendo WiiVerified PurchaseI love the LEGO series of games. My family has them all (except the Clone Wars one). We were mildly upset with the Pirates of the Caribbean game because it froze up randomly. This game makes the Pirates game look perfect. We have not even gotten to the dreaded year 6 issue that most people are having problems with and our game has frozen up numerous times. It's really frustrating too. There is a certain expectation with console games that you put them in your system, and they play flawlessly. This is not a PC that should have to be reconfigured (ie. the sound to mono, video to 480) to run a game. I haven't even had to do that to my computer since Doom back in '94. I have not contacted the customer service number as of yet, but that is forthcoming and we'll see how that goes. I was ready to just toss the game and accept that I wasted 50 dollars, but my 6 y/o was too upset about that, so....
Anyway, all the negative aside, I love the game itself. You get stripped of a bunch of your spells right at the beginning, so you spend a couple minutes (hour or two) learning some new spells. It follows the movies pretty well. I feel that it's similar enough to HP 1-4 to be a sequel, but different enough to keep you interested. I haven't gotten far enough into the game to describe anymore of the gameplay than that.
My family and I have been waiting for this game since we played the original HP 1-4. Love the books, the movies, and the games. Hopefully the bugs and glitches get worked out and we can enjoy the game. We have read book seven, watched parts 1 and 2 of the movie, it would be really nice to be able to play through the rest of the story.
EDIT: Follow-up on 12/23. I found a work around on the internet stating that if you change the Wii settings for video to 480i and sound to Mono that it will run. In fact it does. Since switching the settings, the game has not frozen up once. I still don't feel I should have to "configure" a console, but it's a minor detail to be able to play this great game. Plus, it doesn't really change the look of any other games (miss the stereo sound though) and might also help out with my LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean that is freezing up too.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 6, 2014Platform For Display: Nintendo WiiVerified PurchaseIn years 1-4, I always thought it was so tedious to have to keep switching to Wingardium Leviosa to put objects together and then go back to Reducto to smash things, but in years 5-7, that's like an automatic feature! You don't have to have keep switching spells. No matter what spell you're using, objects that can be put together automatically turn purple and you can swish them up.
Also, when using the red spells that you buy at the Weasley's joke shop, you can select just one to use instead of all of them constantly switching around on you.
Game play was very cool and the ghost that you have to follow flows a lot faster than in 1-4. The cut scenes were, of course, very cute and funny. Overall, I was very satisfied with this game. I love Harry Potter and the whole world of Harry Potter and I thought this game stayed pretty true to the books and movies.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2012Platform For Display: Nintendo WiiVerified PurchaseWell they've either fixed the bug on year 6 for Wii or I just got lucky cause my game didn't freeze at all. I did have some other bugs though. For instance when changing characters by taking the polyjuice potion, it would stick in a way where I could walk around but not be able to use my wand in any way. To fix this I simply paused the game and unpaused it or walked out the room and walked back. It was annoying but it didn't happen every time so it's not that big of a deal.
As for game review, game play over all is easy but I found this one "harder" than 1-4 in a sense that some of the crests and other tokens were much harder to get. Still very enjoyable though and will please Harry Potters fan out there, young or old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christmas gift for grandson.
Platform For Display: Nintendo WiiVerified PurchaseA Christmas gift for my grandson. I find the first in the series hard to determine what is happening but he doesn't. So I believe this game will be well received. I'm surprised that after buying games for my son's 35 years ago, that the cost of Nintendo games are still so high. Still really popular!
