Product Description
For Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) and Dale (Charlie Day), the only thing that would make the daily grind more tolerable would be to grind their intolerable bosses into dust. Quitting is not an option, so, with the benefit of a few too many drinks and some dubious advice from a hustling ex-con, the three friends devise a convoluted and seemingly foolproof plan to rid themselves of their respective employers...permanently. There’s only one problem: even the best-laid plans are only as foolproof as the brains behind them.

Over the top? Ridiculous? Yes, indeed. But Horrible Bosses is actually a truly hilarious movie that wings along on the strength of its leading actors and their amazing chemistry--and on its great high-concept premise. Three friends, Nick (Jason Bateman), Kurt (Jason Sudeikis), and Dale (Charlie Day), commiserate about their three respective Horrible Bosses. And yes, each is the worst kind of HR nightmare. Nick's boss is Dave (Kevin Spacey, terrific), a control-freak megalomaniac. Kurt's is Bobby (an almost unrecognizable Colin Farrell), a skeevy cokehead. And Dale's is Julia (Jennifer Aniston, having so much fun it's contagious), a sexual harasser who never misses an opportunity to prey (or swear). Suddenly, there's a Hitchcockian twist: What if each of the miserable workers could make one of the others' worst nightmares go away? But Horrible Bosses is no Strangers on a Train. Instead, it's a rollicking romp of bad-intentions-gone-even-worse, with the chemistry of all of the actors keeping things moving along crisply. The supporting cast is also great, including Donald Sutherland and Jamie Foxx, a tough hood whom the trio has the very bad sense to get "hit tips" from. Spacey hasn't been in his element like this in years, and it's great to see him back in top form. Farrell should be appreciated as a comic genius after this performance (splendidly directed, it should be pointed out, by veteran TV sitcom director Seth Gordon). And Horrible Bosses gives Aniston a meaty role she was born to play--assertive, moral-less, vengeful, petty. And all of it hilarious. For anyone who's ever had a bad boss, and even fleetingly played with the dark notion that's played here for laughs, Horrible Bosses is the best kind of revenge--served with laughs. --A.T. Hurley

- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2011First, let me say I wasn't a fan of Bridesmaids or The Hangover. Saw them both and wondered what all the hype was about. Second, I had scanned the reviews for this one before renting it and decided that since there seemed to be a 'half n' half' on it - some loved it and some were disappointed - it was probably worth a look. I'm so glad I did, as it was one of the funniest 93 minutes I've enjoyed in a long time!
The 3 main characters really aren't the bosses, but their employees. Each with their own set of quirks, these three friends have growing up together and remaining friends, and hating their bosses in common. What struck me about a third of the way in was how much it reminded me of the movie '9 to 5' - the theme of wanting to kill the boss and the comradery between the main characters.
All the characters were played perfectly. All of them are really one-dimensional, but they don't need to be more. It all works and you get some surprising big name stars you've not seen in awhile popping into the movie too.
Situational comedy is at the core of this film. It's not slap-stick, but the dialogue between the characters is sharp and on-point. If you are laughing too hard, the beauty of a rental is you can rewind to catch what you just missed! I did it several times while watching this movie.
You get a happy ending with lots of laughs from start to finish. The characters are fun, you empathize with the employees, feel the 'ugh' from the bosses, and laugh at the ineptness of regular guys who could be you, or your friends.
Horrible Bosses is for anyone who enjoys comedic bi-play without a concern for the movie 'should' or 'could' be. Just have fun with it! You'll be glad you did.

UPDATE 11/17/15: I've probably seen this film half a dozen times more and I continue to enjoy it, finding new things to laugh about and considering this film one of my go-to, fun favorites.
It bears restating that it's not going to be for everyone, but if you're not overly sensitive to naughty, crude talk and like the actors (Bateman, Aniston, Spacey...) give it a look. For me, I find I like it more now than I did the first time I saw it, which doesn't happen all that often.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2025It is a bit on the naughty side, so caveat emptor.
They picked a great cast and gave them great lines. I am a BIG fan of Jason Bateman and Jason Sudeikis and they have some of the best lines and facial expressions.
Some laugh out loud dialogue.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2024I started the movie and then it stopped working. Wouldn't play so my 48 hrs was up. I'm not sure if it was my tvs fault or Amazon prime video.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beste Komödie seit langem!

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't Help But Love It...
"Oh" my good lord i just love this,as a recipient of a horrible boss i can relate,
but i wish my horrible boss look like Jennifer Aniston, she can absolutely talk dirty or
bad to me any day of the week, and i will still get her coffee, but it's got to be Collin Farrell
that stole the show,i could not stop laughing at his character which was writing so brilliantly,
never knew he was so good at comedy, and then there is Kevin Spacey what could you not say
about this man, everything this man touch he turns to gold,i can not remember any movie
i did not love with him in it,from Seven all the way down to 21,Jamie Foxx was the dumbest hit-man
i've ever seen, this movie was just hilarious and so much fun,now some of the dialogue that's
being said by Jennifer Aniston maybe offensive to some,i know i was and I'm a guy,i don't
know if it was because it was coming from such a pretty face, from seeing her on [Friends]
cause that's all i knew her from, and trust me you can't swear on T.V.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bateman, Day and Sudekis combine with style, with some excellent performances from the supporting cast.
There is a lot to like about this film. What drew me to it individually was the 3 leads. I'm a great fan of Bateman and his excellent comic timing, despite his Hollywood stigma. And then there's the always excellent Arrested Development. Then there's Day, who I could watch all day. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is something I stumbled on bored one afternoon on Netflix. I now recommend it to everyone. Finally, Sudekis seems to me like someone who flirts with that Hollywood lifestyle, but always has these random cameo's and roles in various TV shows and films that demonstrate how good a comic actor he is.
Together those 3 to not disappoint. They all play to their strengths, and they work exceptionally well. Comic timing is excellent, the story is wacky (Foxx by the way, is terrific), and the bosses add to it all. Farrell and Spacey play to their strengths, albeit an even wackier version of some of their typical characters, but Aniston really impressed me. I'm not really a fan of her films, but she played this role so well.
With that strong a cast, on that good form, it's hard not to generate a few laughs. It's barely relatable, but it doesn't try to be, hence I would definitely recommend it! It won't be for everyone, but it was for me!
