As a bonus, yesterday I accidentally took it on an ocean swim. Stopped working, but within a few hours it was back in service. Still, I decided to take it apart and wash the salt out. I also changed the battery on my photon II at the same time. What I learned is that the simpler photon II has no circuit board but the energizer does. Still, upon disassembly the photon II fell completely apart as I opened it and I was a bit confused on reassembly until I could study it. The photon II is just an LED with it's pigtail wires going on each side of the battery stack. Less to fail than the Energizer high tech with it's circuit board and actual switch, but also perhaps delicate in it's own way. I found it easier to change the battery in the Energizer High Tech (this one), so I'm sticking with these in the future. And I do like the switch better.
NOW, there is a Photon II Pro for sale (http://www.amazon.com/LRI-PII-Beam-Light-White/dp/B00CIQVYUO/ref=pd_sim_sg_5?ie=UTF8&refRID=0GK260EZ43WJZH8J0MZY) that seems to be a more direct comparison to this light, but it's $12.50 whereas this one is half. I'm sold on this one. I really like many of the Energizer lights that have been coming out last few years. I use flashlights a lot and they are getting good reliable designs that sell for far less than the boutique brands but work as well or better.
They are a very well made and solid, which does make them a bit heavy if that concerns you.
The three modes are 1. always on bright 2. always on dim 3. flashing. I only ever use the first mode, but even at that, it isn't too annoying having the other two modes; if you use the first mode for more than a second or so, the next time you press the button it automatically switches off (instead of making you flip through the other two modes). I guess the dim move would be okay if you had to conserve battery life. The blinking mode might be useful in an emergency signaling situation.
Battery life is a couple of years of brief nightly use and counting.
My last endorsement - the bright mode is bright enough that you can activate it in the dark, let the light dangle down and use a key attached to the keychain to open a door - the light will be strong enough from reflection to allow you to see easily without having to point the light at the lock you're opening.
What I like:
- The built-in key ring holder plus the included split ring.
- Replaceable batteries that are common and easy to purchase.
- Brightness level
- I can bypass the modes I don't like.
- Well built.
- I can remove the back for cleaning.
What I don't like:
- Removing the back cover, either for cleaning or replacing batteries, takes a magnetic micro #25 (if I remember correctly) screwdriver.
- Replacing and correctly positioning the two CR2016 batteries is annoying because I wear bifocals.
- I must use my micro soldering station to access the back panel (not required by the masses).
- The rubberized activation button and crevices attract/collect too much debris.
- The annoying flash mode.
Most people will probably find that replacing the batteries is too much trouble or too involved/difficult. Even with the correctly sized screwdriver, it is very easy to strip the screws (there are four). Without a magnetic screwdriver, removing/replacing the screws is very difficult (I magnetized the screws so they would attract each other in order to decrease the likelihood of loss).
Do not apply much pressure on the screws. At the first sign of resistance, I stop then I apply just a tad bit more torque. Just a tad.
I know/knew about all/most of the negatives prior to purchase so I don't feel it is fair to deduct too many stars. However, there are so many negatives that I feel some deduction is appropriate.
