From the Manufacturer

Amazing, small and lightweight but perfectly formed and an essential accessory for any owner of an iPod, iPhone or MP3 player, this ultra portable rechargeable pop-out speaker is perfect for listening to your favorite music when you're on your travels or out with friends and family. With its bottom panel extended out and bright blue power LED indicator, operating this device of 3" in diameter is disarmingly simple. There is only a power switch, an audio cable of about 4" length and a plug which you insert into audio sources such as MP3 players, mobile phones or notebook computers. There are also four mobile phone audio adapters so that you can blast music from compatible phones of brands like Sony Ericsson and Nokia. The speaker also comes with a USB cable for recharging its battery. To pack away the gadget, just push the bottom panel into the capsule. Push the panel again and the base pops out and it enhances the bass sounds. With its digitally-amplified 3.8 watt speaker, 360 sound field and expandable bass system, featuring a range of audio connectors and with up to 6 hours of playback from a single charge, you'll be able to enjoy your music wherever and whenever you want.

Update: The pop-out bottom lasted less time then I expected. It seized in a halfway position after six weeks of careful use and the speaker has been returned to Amazon.

I was quite excited about this after reading the reviews. Actual performance is somewhat below what I had expected based on some of the reviews but about on a par with that I would reasonably expect from a small speaker with a powerful driver behind it.

First point, this is not a Bose! Nor does it really measure up to the quality of most mid-range MP3 docks (logitech and the like). That said it is, of course, very portable. I'd put the sound quality in the same category as $15 powered desktop computer speakers but in a smaller package with a rechargeable battery.

The sound is clear and the bass is OK for a unit of the size. I have compared it to an X-mini II and I think that this unit wins on sound quality and volume but looses out on portability. That said it is still pretty small. The battery lasts a long time (I haven't worn it out yet) and if you leave it switched on by mistake it will not drain away too quickly. There is a little LED to remind you that it is on.

The Bass is occasionally distorted but the issue seems to be as much with the quality of the MP3 and it's normalization as the speaker. On many sources (podcasts, classical music) it can drive to full volume with little distortion. That said, what speaker can really handle the full volume it can go to?

This is probably a good choice over the X-mini for outdoor types as the speaker is covered with a grille and therefore protected a little more from damage.

Disappointments: It is actually a little larger then expected. While the X-mini is definitely pocket-able this is still large enough that it would look a little odd walking around with it in your pocket. Build quality is not great and probably the biggest issue for me. This was never worth $39.99 and to be honest, even at $25 I'd say it's borderline. If I could choose a honest price for this I'd go for $17.99. The 'pop-out' bottom seems like it will break within a year or so. If I saw it on a shelf in Gordmans I wouldn't look twice at $25.

Update: The pop-out bottom lasted less time then I expected. It seized in a halfway position after six weeks of careful use and the speaker has been returned to Amazon.

Overall: I'm satisfied with this but it doesn't feel like a bargain - I think I got what I paid for given that these mini speakers seem to be a 'premium' product. I'd have rather paid less but all the mini-speakers seem to be around this price point. I'd buy this over the X-mini, therefore I feel content with my purchase.

I bought this because it's small and I can carry it with me everywhere I go in Afghanistan. My work area is pretty noisy, so this helps a lot, the internal speaker on the Ipod touch doesn't quite cut it. It's a single speaker and as such, the sound is not going to be superb, but it's definitely not bad.

    Good points:

-Portable. It's got a rechargeable battery, I did the initial charge and have not had to charge it again, I don't listen to it for long periods, an hour here, an hour there. I'd say I currently have about 6 hours of play on the initial charge. There is no volume, so it's either on or off, if you continue moving the switch past on, there's a bass boost feature, which is somewhat noticeable.
-Some people complain that the cord is too short, it's barely long enough to connect to a device, but for me, it's perfect. I like that I don't have to carry an MP3 cord! The cord is built in and stores on the bottom of the device.
-Good sound for a small speaker! It's not perfect sound, but you aren't going to get anything in Afghanistan that is, so it's good enough! Surprisingly good sound from that little speaker and you can definitely hear bass too. You can feel the little amp working if you touch the speaker while it's on, it does vibrate ok.
-The unit is sturdy and well built. I pretty much carry it everywhere with me and it's taken some minor abuse really well!

    Bad points:

-Really the only thing that's been a problem, and it's not much of a problem, is that the little rubber feet come off in my pocket sometimes. I just need to put a drop of glue on then they will never come off again. Or I could just take all 3 off, and it will still sit nice on it's plastic feet.

All in all, this unit is well worth the $25 I paid for it. It would be perfect for bike rides, picnic's, I'll take it when I ride my ATVs (Sometimes it's nice to have music when you take a break somewhere). Lots of uses! Great product!!!
