Audio Return Channel (ARC)
ARC is an audio link meant to replace other cables between the TV and the A/V receiver or speaker system. Without ARC, the audio output from the TV must be routed by another cable, typically TOSLink or coax, into the speaker system

And still going strong.
There are countless HDMI cables on the market that range in price from “jeeeeze” to “OMG?”
Going through each brand and cable isn’t necessary, as there are only two claims these cables make to justify their prices, and both are easily refuted.
1. Better picture and/or sound quality. This isn’t possible. The only way one cable could make your content look or sound better than another cable is if one of them changed the data flowing across them. If any of the data going across somehow gets changed, the only two possible results at the TV end are sparkles (a pixel dropping out, quite noticeable) or the entire image dropping out. It can’t look sharper (or softer), brighter (or dimmer), more colorful (or muted).
This would mean huge aspects of the image have changed, and HDMI cables just don’t work like that.
Over longer runs, the signal can degrade, but that doesn’t mean the image degrades. There is no correlation between signal quality and picture quality. This is not analog. That isn’t how HDMI cables work. The image will look perfect, regardless of the signal strength, up to the point where dropouts or sparkles happen.
After that, there’s nothing. Before that is perfect.
There are people all over the Internet who claim to have seen huge improvements after switching to expensive HDMI cables. Objectively, this isn’t possible. There are any number of possibilities regarding what’s going on (different settings, confirmation bias, HDMI cable company employees, et cetera).
2. Better made. The other common boast is that more expensive HDMI cables are better made, implying they’ll last longer. Whether this is true is actually pretty irrelevant.
Even if that weren’t true, and let’s say for some reason the $6 HDMI cable you buy lasts only two years (it will likely last longer) and you need to replace it. So you’ve spent $6. How is a $100 HDMI cable that lasts four years a better deal?
“So, does a $10 HDMI cable make your system look or sound different from a $100 or $1,000 cable? The short answer is, ‘Absolutely not.’”
Audioholics did a massive article a few years ago, testing long HDMI cables.
Some advice there is a touch dated, but the core of the science is still sound. “I have to come away saying that most cables under 4-5 meters will pass just about anything in today’s arsenal of 1080p.” Or if you prefer a shorter, more succinct version, look to the more recent The Truth vs Hype about Expensive HDMI Cables: “So, does a $10 HDMI cable make your system look or sound different from a $100 or $1,000 cable?
The long and the short answer is, "NO.’”
Expertreviews.com: "Expensive HDMI cables make no difference—the absolute proof is a great article with some awesomely extensive objective testing: “After methodically testing each cable, our comprehensive results revealed the truth. We couldn’t find a single error in any of the frames of video we captured using our tests, regardless of the cable we used. Even allowing for a single error per billion bits, none of our captured frames contained as much as a single pixel out of order by a single colour shade.”
Tested Mag: The Difference Between Cheap and Expensive HDMI Cables: “As should be abundantly clear, expensive HDMI cables are simply not worth purchasing for normal use. In the case that you are running cable in a permanent fashion through walls or ceilings, it may be prudent to spend a little extra for heavier-duty cables for the sake of longevity, but if you’re spending extra on gold-plated connectors and the like, you are doing little more than embedding hard-earned cash in the walls of your home.”
Eurogamer: “The conclusion is that you can run any HDMI cable—no matter how cheap—and get identical results.” And also, “The important thing to point out is that there is no real parallel with the world of analogue cables.”
Here’s a reference in Popular Mechanics in Brand-Name HDMI Cables: Are They Worth It?: “The fact is, HDMI is digital, meaning you either get the feed or you don’t. High prices and gimmicks like gold-plating don’t affect 1s and 0s. Our advice: Purchase your wiring online for cheap, and use the saved money to upgrade to a larger flat screen.”
The fact is, below 50 feet, performance is going to be a LOT more uniform. In other words, you’ll have more cables that will work on everything. As such, it’s even more likely that a cheap cable will perform the same as their more expensive counterparts.
At short distances (under 10 feet), like we’ve always said, there’s not going to be any difference.”
Link Depot HDMI to HDMI Cable 25 feet
Conclusion:
There is no reason to spend more money on basic HDMI cables.
Again, there is no reason to spend more money on basic HDMI cables. For longer runs, the Link Depot HDMI Cable works great.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2023The 25-foot HDMI cable has been a game-changer for linking my computer to the TV in another room. Its length provided the flexibility I needed to route it through the attic, ensuring a clean and discreet setup. The cable worked flawlessly, delivering excellent video and audio quality with no noticeable signal degradation.
The ease of installation and reliable performance make this HDMI cable a standout choice for those looking to extend their digital connections over a significant distance. The sturdy construction and secure connections ensured a stable link between my computer and TV, providing a seamless experience for streaming, presentations, or simply extending my desktop to a larger screen. If you're in need of a reliable and lengthy HDMI cable for connecting devices across rooms, this 25-foot option is a reliable and effective solution that has exceeded my expectations.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2018Our TV doesn't get our Netflix or Kodi channels, so an HDMI cord from our laptop to our computer is a great idea. We've been attaching a short HDMI cable to the computer and using a wireless mouse to control it, but it dawned on us recently that that's silly. We can just attach a 25' HDMI cable to the computer and control it from any part of the room (or adjoining rooms). It's great. We should have bought a longer HDMI cord a long time ago!
One of our computers has a problem with the sound coming out of the computer, instead of the speakers hooked up to the TV. And sometimes you have to unplug and re-plug in the cable to get the picture to work. This REALLY confused us when we first got the cord. We were convinced that it didn't work for a good twenty or thirty minutes. But the cable appears to work fine and this might be a computer issue, rather than an HDMI problem.
No one mentioned this in any of the other revues when we bought it, so, unless other people have this issue, we're assuming that we just need to change some computer channels to be more compatible with the TV. Overall, really great, inexpensive purchase that has made our TV life a lot simpler. Would definitely recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 28, 2011While I am occasionally willing to spend a little more (not Monster Prices) on analog cables to assure signal integrity, my spending habits on digital are much different. HDMI cables are pure digital signals, meaning that in the vast majority of cases, they either function 100% correctly, or not at all. Yes, you can construct a scenario where this is not strictly true, and if a $100 cable will give you additional piece-of-mind about the quality of your $50,000 entertainment system, go for it.
The only difference in HDMI cables for most of us mere audio/video mortals is the construction. And like most low-priced cables, these are not the most robustly constructed items you will ever find. If I had to guess, I'd say that they probably have an estimated lifetime of less than 100 plug insertions and removals.
So it really comes down to what you are going to use them for. If you have an application where you will be plugging in and removing the cable constantly (perhaps hooking a laptop to your television), by all means buy some more expensive and better constructed cables. If you application is more like mine, where you plug the things in and forget about them until that once-a-year when your wife makes you move everything to "clean", these will be fine.
One thing I wish that HDMI (and other cable manufacturers) would do is to put a random number on cables-sort of like golf and tennis balls. It would give you a better chance of identifying cables in the inevitable rat's nest of wires in a typical entertainment center.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fully satisfied with purchase
HDMI cables arrived quickly and functioned exactly as expected. I use this cable to connect my laptop to an HDMI tv. Sometimes sound is not transferred to TV from certain applications, but I think this may be because my computer decides on the sound output when these applications are started since the problem can be fixed by rebooting the applications in question after plugging in the HDMI cable.
I've never used one of the more expensive HDMI cables so I can't really compare, but I don't know what improvement could be expected. TV and sound system works exactly like my laptop monitor and speakers would (with the obvious exception of being much bigger, of course). I've only been using it a few days now but I haven't had any problems (except for the audio one above which, again, I think is due to starting said applications before actually hooking up HDMI) and have no complaints. Based on what I've heard/read, greater expense with HDMI cables is generally a matter of branding and no real improvement is to be expected. I definitely recommend this product.

The reason I bought this cable was because I wanted to use my LED TV as an additional screen when using Laptop. The Wi-Fi Direct feature was too unreliable and would disconnect every now and then. This cable is long enough and serves the purpose well. This cable is very reasonably priced for what its worth.
