I was reading someone's other reviews, and tripped across their review of this lantern, which incented me to buy it. It's a plastic lantern toy which has a single LED as the light source, and plays sounds of crickets, frogs, and a wolf howling when you put it into the right mode or press on the yellow button.

    Pro:
+ The sounds are great! You can set it to play them continuously, or so that whenever you push the yellow button you get somewhere between 15 and 30 seconds of sound
+ It looks similar to a lantern. Even though we've never camped, my 3 year old toddler knows what it is, which was a surprise!
+ Frosted shapes around the bottom of the clear part cast shadows of trees, a moose, and a wolf howling.
+ light enough (weight-wise) that my 3 year old toddler has no problem carrying and waving it around.
+ Has stood up to my son waving and dragging it around just fine so far.

    Con:
    - The light is enough for a toy, but is in no way a replacement for a flashlight or proper lamp. I think that's OK, as this is a toy for camping in boxes and tents indoors, and certainly improves visibility for those scenarios.

The lamp is lightweight, but relatively solid. The yellow handle on top can be used to carry it around, or even wave it around (as my son does) though I think that might be pushing it. It has a switch on one side which lets you choose between 'light only', 'off', and 'light and sound'. Regardless of the mode you choose, pushing the yellow button by the speaker (which is a 'demo' button) will make light and sound for 15-30 seconds. I believe it takes three AA batteries, which it comes with.

Overall a fun toy. My kid is absolutely inundated with toys (as you can tell if you browse my other reviews) but this one caught his attention and has been getting preferential treatment the last few evenings.

It's been three days so far. I'll update my review if anything significant changes my opinion of the lantern, but so far a big thumbs up!

We purchased this latern with the tent, fire log, and roasted marshmellow kit. Our 2 and 4 year old son both like the lattern and use it without the other stuff. The sounds making it seem more like a "camping" experience. We all had fun pretending to camp and being "scared" by the noises on the lattern. I would recommend the lantern, log, and roasted marshmallow kit, but was disappointed in the tent.

This is a really fun toy for children who enjoy building forts and "camping out" at home. On ours, the nature sounds have continued working while the bulb has burned out, defeating the purpose of a "lantern". I can't figure out how to open the housing to take out the bulb, nor do I know what type it is for replacement. Disappointing!

Insect Lore Campfire Kids Lantern is a simple means for kids to use their imaginations and pretend they are enjoying the nighttime at a campsite or taking an evening hike in the woods. It makes a good choice of toy for kids who already enjoy camping or who would like to camp and want to pretend they are in the middle of a campsite, lighting the way to safety.

This kid's lantern is more than a lighting device and, in fact, the lighting is not likely to be the reason most kids enjoying using it for play. For my little ones, they like the sounds the most and continuously push the button to listen to them. A wolf howls, crickets chirp, and the sounds of the night come to life. My kids like this feature best and they like imitating the sounds as they listen.

Another added feature that kids will find fun is the shadow effects it creates. The sides of the lantern have small figures of trees, a wolf, an owl, and a moose. As the light shines, it creates shadows of these figures against walls, tents, or whatever the backdrop happens to be. My kids like this and they like rotating the lantern to see what other shadows it can make and how they will look against different backdrops.

The one thing that didn't keep my kid's interest and that I also found lacking is the light itself. The shadows created by the light are fun, but the problem with the light is that it is too weak. It is nothing more than a tiny bulb in the center and offers very little illumination. A more powerful light would have added to the appeal and usefulness of this toy. I realize it isn't intended to take the place of a real lantern, but a little more light would make the toy better.

Camping does have a certain appeal to kids and the Insect Lore Campfire Kids Lantern is an okay toy for the camping- focused imagination that it stimulates. It doesn't rank among my kids favorites, but they do like the sounds and shadows and the toy has enough going for it overall to earn a small recommendation.

It is a very fun toy for kid. My kids (8 and 4 years old) like to sleep in a tent; so I bought them pop-up tents, campfire log and 2 camp fire lanterns for Christmas presents. The lantern makes animal sounds like wolf, owl and crickets when they turn it on. The best part is that the lantern gives the shadow images of a wolf, pine tree, a muse animal on their tent when they turn the light on. So when they stay inside the tent, they can enjoy looking at these shadows and listen to the sound of the animals. All of these fun things give the kids a feeling that they are really camping outside. My kids also can turn the light on and select to turn the sound on or off. The price is affordable. The lantern is made of good quality and not so heavy for a little 4 years old to carry.
My kids enjoy the lanterns. I would recommend it to everyone.

This lantern is adorable. I bought it for my grandsons who love to "camp" in the living room. It has noises that sound as if you're in the outdoors ... they love it! It gives them enough light to sit and play or tell stories.... and they love the sounds. They are hard on toys and this has lasted for a while (6 months). I was concerned about purchasing after reading some reviews, but I'm glad I bought it.

Out of all the items ordered in this range this was the best. Still pricey but realistic animal sounds and he loved the lantern aspect.

Massive box for a small lantern. Doesn't give off much light and there are very few noises to keep interest. It is literally just a prop to play camping.
