Good Top for a Great Price

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2013I bought this to put on a 2000 TC SE model. My first time to do something like this. Instructions are pretty weak but did the job. The top fit well though the windows were a major chore stretching to fit the frame assembly. I strongly suggest getting another person to help you fit this on the bar. Be very careful when you stretch the window on the fram. Insert lower edge first with forward corner as your starting point of the window. I would not unzip window while putting it on. You need an extra set of hands to roll the last corner over the frame. Suggest you end with the top front corner. I had to use a wedge to help roll the corner at the end. DO NOT USE A SHARP SCREW DRIVER you will cut the material or puncture it. I suggest a good strong paint stirer with round corners. Made the last roll over a lot easier.
As far as the top when you mount the screws to the front window frame bar get a good leather punch or punch don't use a philips screw driver or a drill bit. An ice pick will do if you can not get a sharp punch. Take your time and center the holes properly start at one end and work around keeping the material tight. There is a plastic underlayment on the top with slots for this you will find they are well placed. Don't just center your punch the screws you removed may not have been put on in a uniform manner.
On the doors make sure you fully insert the windows before you try to match it with the door frame and be careful to not bend the rubber weather stripping. If you close the door and it does not fit under the top seal you did not fully insert the window pins properly in the door, a slight hammer strike on top of the pin angles will seat the door frame. Don't hit too hard or get carried away it does not take much to reset the pins in the door. Also do all three pins and make sure it is fully inserted evenly over the door panel. You should see no gaps between the outer door and the new cover at the bottom. Improper seating will damage the weather stripping on the top cover above the roll bar assembly.
On the rear window take your time to align the zippers properly the metal tabs of the zipper guide will should be even at the end below both zippers then take the top zipper and carefully zip it close. Don't just pull the zipper use one hand to hold the two sections above the zipper together as you zip it. Failure to do this can damage the zipper. Strongly suggest you do not secure the bar at the bottom of the window to the jeep frame until you zip it completely close. Roll the bar into the grove for it don't try to just jam it in. haste makes for a new window so take your time. Once you have properly set the window then tuck the plastic wedge into the guides to lock it in place not the other way around.
Inside roll the velcro around the frames and make sure that the velcro is evenly attached no wrinkles it will come apart later if you do when you are driving. Hard earned lesson. There are snaps to secure one of the bars. I suggest you inspect the old snaps before mounting the top. If any are bad don't waste your time and be fustrated new snap kits are cheap and available. Remember you are replacing an old top for a reason. I found two snaps were bent one loose, ( I bought a 13 year old jeep). It cost $12 to get a complete snap kit. No problem replacing the bad ones. Be careful of your front window mouting bar as far as the old self tap screws the instructions say to use the old screws. I went to my local hardware store and took some of the screws to show the clerk he came up with stainless and a slightly larger head. Make sure you use the same thread self tapping screws often look alike but are not especially with the cheap China junk you can buy from the big warehouse hardware stores.
It is easy to use the wrong thread and find you just ruined your plastic bar. You can go larger thread but beware of the head so it will not interfear witht he seat.
Jeep puts a special tape on the front window slot where the latch mechinisum for the top. If your jeep is old like mine is you might want to replace this and if rust is present hit with some rust reformer paint.
A great buy all in all much better than paying twice as much for other tops
- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2025Great top for the money. No leaks and looks great.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2014I was so intimidated after reading other reviews, I had a hard time committing to getting this done. As a petite (aka weak) female, I was concerned about having to abandon the project midway through until someone could come bail me out. Turns out, these fears were completely unfounded. It was very straightforward and easy to do. I laid the pieces in the hot sun as recommended; this was an important step. I also studied my old softtop and where and how it was connected to the frame. This was pretty important, as was understanding to start out with the top laid out upside down inside the Jeep. That part isn't immediately intuitive. I was concerned about the header screws, but they released fine. I did not have all of them as it turned out, but completed the job anyway, using some similar screws I found in a jar in the basement (see, sometimes it's good to hoard). The one problem I did run into was that the softtop's holes for receiving the header screws were not well-aligned with those on my header bar, and I had to reinstall them when I found I was totally misaligned by the time I got to the last screw. I was able to make it work by inserting each screw into the far righthand edge of each hole, and I still barely got the last rightmost screw installed. It's worth visually checking this out in advance. That part was the most time-consuming, and the rest of the install went quite easily. I did find the driver's side substantially looser than the passenger side, but I think things will shift around and settle over time. There were tiny tolerance problems, such as the lower hard corner of the driver's side window did not fit perfectly into the slot, and contacted the door during opening and closing. This seems to have rectified itself over time though (particularly after I tugged and coaxed it multiple times). The first time I lowered the new top, I had help so it went quite smoothly. I raised it again alone, and had to tug and adjust here and there, but no real problems. Overall, it's a fine fit, and the price was great. The black top and darkened windows are very slick, and totally updates an older Jeep. However, from the inside looking out, I found the dark windows a bit too dark, although I will probably get used to that. It's worth mentioning that my old top had split in the upper passenger side corner along the windshield, and the new top seems very, very tight on that same corner. I'm a little worried about how that will age. I will likely sell the door skins as others have, and probably sell them with my soft doors as I don't ever plan on using them. My watertightness test arrived in the form of Hurricane Arthur, which slammed 60 mph winds and buckets of rain vertically from all sides for about 12 hours. I'm happy to report there were no leaks, and the top held well. Good purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2023I will post pictures later to supplement this review.
THE GOOD
- It's a quality replacement it feels like so far, very sturdy.
- Fairly easy to install (it does require muscle to install the windows for the upper door).
- Looking outside from inside the car through the tinted windows is very clear and has great visibility.
THE NOT SO GOOD
- It makes a loud vibrating noise while driving along the top. I'm not sure if this is my fault from installation or not.
- The zippers for the upper doors make A LOT of noise. I had to try to silence these, I might even cut them off and replace them with quiet zippers.
- The windows look a little wrinkled, I'm not sure if this will go away or not, but my old softtop did not have this issue. I will update this thread during that time.
- If your upper door window frame is bent in any way, this will have issues installing the upper door skin, and closing your door. Your door might not fully close, you might have to really push the door close. New window frames are expensive, so I'll be slamming my door closed until then. Be mindful it was EXTREMELY difficult to install the upper door skin onto the frame, if you encounter an issue, start with the bottom, then use a wrench (opposite end) to grab the window frame and pull it on.
OVERALL
- Great top! 5 Star for sure, after modification to the zippers with rope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use a spatula at the end to put the doors on
After reviewing other peoples commenta i was wary. Shouldnt have been. Another smittybuilt win. The doors are hard to fit, but you only need to do it once. It was 10 min for the second one. Helps to open the windows, and put the bottom on first. Use anplastic spatula to aid the last bit.
Great looking stuff

4.0 out of 5 stars + Great and easy to install
+ Great and easy to install! (summer temperatures preferred for installation)
+ Looks amazing too.
The only place I made it lose a star is that the fabric is a little thinner and seems just a bit cheaper that the OEM one. (I'm weary about long lasting)
Other than tha, buy with no worries
