Replace 15 pairs of dumbbells, 915 lbs of free weights in the space of 1 pair, at a fraction of the cost of traditional dumbbells.

Amazon.com

With a unique design that expands to meet your strength needs, PowerBlock Elite dumbbells are among the most versatile and effective tools ever developed for strength training. PowerBlocks work intuitively. Rather than requiring you to buy a room full of dumbbells, PowerBlock Elites act just like a weight stack at the gym, with a handle that fits inside the first weight, which fits inside the second, which fits inside the third, etc. When you want to change weights, you simply move the weight selector pin into the appropriate slot and you're set. As you lift the core, all the weights above the selector pin are lifted at the same time, turning your 10-pound dumbbell into a 15-pound dumbbell, or your 15-pound dumbbell into a 30-pound dumbbell. Not only is the system remarkably easy to use, but it's also cost- and space-efficient, as a single pair of dumbbells can do the work of dozens.

The PowerBlock Elite set adjusts from 10 to 52.5 pounds per hand in 2.5- to 5-pound increments, in effect doing the job of 15 pairs of traditional dumbbells. In essence, you'll be storing 915 pounds of free weights while taking up the space of just one dumbbell pair. Boasting black powder-coated weight plates in a traditional square shape, the free weights are ideal whether you're trying to build muscle mass, firm and tone your physique, or get rid of unwanted body fat.

I shopped around for adjustable dumbbells before settling on these. I got them to use with the P90x workout series. So far they have been great. They are very compact compared to the Bowlfex model. The lightest weight setting is actually 5 lbs, not 10 lbs. My only complaint is the 2 1/2 lb metal slugs located in the handle. The slugs are what make the dumbbells adjustable, and they can only be added or removed with the dumbbell at it's lowest weight setting. For example, to adjust the weight from 40 to 50 lbs, the adjustment pin has to be removed, handle assembly removed and the two metal slugs inserted into the handle, then the whole goes back into the weight stack. It's a minor complaint though, with practice it can be done in 10 seconds. The first round of workouts took a little longer, getting the correct weight. After that, there is plenty of time in between sets to get the weight you want for the next exercise. The 52.5 lb set is more than enough to start, and is expandable to 90 lbs. Overall, I am very pleased with the product and would recommend it to others looking for adjustable dumbbells.

I looked high and low for which adjustable dumbbells to get. As others have said, the description of weight range is off. These go from 5-50 lbs per hand. But these are the kind that can go up to 130 lbs per hand with add on plates. For the price I pad, $312 and free shipping, that is an amazing deal. They would have been over $400 with shopping from the manufacturer.

I debated long and hard over this style vs. the Bowflex and other ones in that similar style. The final decision was two fold. I was afraid to get a lesser quality one for safety reasons. When you are lifting heavy weights above your head you want to be sure nothing will fall on it. Then it came down to price... these were less than the Bowflex. After using these, I am really glad that I got these over the Bowflex, even if price were equal. Here is why:

    1) Safety: Even with the high quality of the Bowflex, there is still reviews of weights falling out of any with this style. That is just scary. With these Powerblocks, that is not an issue. Be sure you seat the pin right (if you are not careful you could get one side of the pin in one plate's hole and the other side in another), and from there it is good. The pin has the weight of the block to hold it in, a magnet on the pin, and a bungee that needs tension to extend far enough to come out.
    2) Durability: There are not parts to break down. The worst that could happen is the selector pin is lost, but I am assuming you can buy another. With the Bowflex style ones that is a mechanical system to break. Plus if the mechanism that holds the plates in is broken or wears, it turns into a safety issue
    3) Expandability: Not all Powerblocks are expandable, but this set is. 50 lbs per hand may or may not be a lot depending on who you are and what you do. For me, 50 lbs per hand is good for now, but I will probably have to expand within a year. For exercises like triceps that I use one dumbbell for two hands, 50 lbs is not a huge amount. Bench press will also probably need more. I don't see needing the full 120 lbs per hand you can get up to, but 90 per hand will be nice.
    4) Size and shape: You don't really realize it, but those Bowflex style ones are BIG. The way they nest, they are pretty long. They are also not flat on the sides. These Powerblocks are about the same size as a normal dumbbell. They also are flat on the bottoms. You don't think about it, but the most natural position to set down a dumbbell after some exercises is on its end. You cannot do that with the Bowflex style ones.
    5) Adjustment Increments: OK, so the Bowflex dumbbells go in 2.5 lbs steps I am pretty sure. But for a lot they go in 5 or even 10 lbs jumps. That is a big difference. These go in 2.5 lbs steps with the adder weights. The adder weights are small shiny metal cylinders that weight 2.5 lbs each. These are actually about the size of normal 2.5 lbs dumbbells, and my wife loves using them alone. You can pop them into the handles to adjust as you need. It can take a minute to add because you have to remove the weight pin and pull the handle out of the stack, stick in the adder weight, slide the latch (but very secure and once again safety first), then put back into the weights and select which ones you want. It isn't hard, but not the simplest method in the world. But for the added complexity it makes up for it with safety and durability... again nothing to break. Bear in mind that there will be a 5 lbs jump periodically because the handle alone is 5 lbs. You can adjust accordingly: 5, 7.5, 10, 15 (handle plus one weight no adders), 17.5 (handle, one adder, one weight), 20 (handle, both adders, one weight), 25 (handle, two weights, no adders), etc.

All in all, I highly recommend this brand of dumbbells over any other adjustable ones out there. Check out their website for tons more information, just be sure you really look at all the models for the pros, cons, and features of each. Some don't use adder weights and are easier to adjust, but don't do as small of increments or expand. The ones I have seen at Dicks only go to 45 lbs, don't expand, and don't use adder weights. The are quicker to adjust but not nearly as flexible. Still better than the Bowflex style ones though...

There are a very limited number of reviews for this product, but I purchased them anyway based on the reviews for other Powerblock products and the ones here. As a critique of Powerblock's costumer service: When these came in the mail the packaging was great and they were in pristine condition; however, they accidentally gave me a classic model handle. I immediately called their costumer service and they were very easy to talk to! They apologized and sent me the proper aluminum handle for free the next day and I received it the following week. They even let me keep the classic model handle, so that's great costumer service!

For the Elite Aluminum Powerblock itself: I'm not sure why the other reviewers say that their weights are 5-50lbs. It could be that PowerBlock has the Classic model label for the weights on this product, but it is not accurate. Amazon has it correct. I put my weights without any adder cylinders on a scale and it reads 9.6lbs. With the adder cylinders the handle weighs 14lbs, and with all the weights together one powerblock weighs 52.4lbs. As I have the classic model handle as well (it is made of plastic) it is 5 pounds lighter, so that one is definitely around 5-50lbs. The PowerBlock Elite Aluminum has an aluminum handle and 4 weight selections that are ~10lbs each. You can adjust the weights in increments of ~2.5lbs by taking 1 or 2 of the adder weights out of the handle. For example, you can start with one weight on the Powerblock with 0 adders, this is 20lbs, then drop an adder weight in there and you get 22.5lbs., another: 25lbs. Then take the adders out and put it on the next weight selection to 30lbs.

Overall the Powerblocks are extremely sturdy and barely make any rattling noise when you're doing any sort of lifting. The weights themselves are securely fastened by the magnetic pin that is placed between the weight and Powerblock itself (I believe this pin is also replaceable for $10 or something if the magnets wear down after some years of use). I've done many sets of shoulder presses and chest presses so far, and many other exercises where the weights are above your head. There is no fear of the weight getting dislodged and falling down on you. The main reason I went for this product instead of the cheaper adjustable weights or Bowflex is because of the safety concern for their plastic adjusting pins breaking and allowing weights to smash your face in. You can feel pretty confident that along as you follow the directions (such as putting the pin right side up) that those weights are not going anywhere since the pin is made of stainless steel. As for the handle: it is EXTREMELY comfortable, but I still choose to wear gloves during lifting since sometimes my wrist can scrape up against the edge of the Powerblock. The wrist protectors were very strange at first but after getting used to it you feel like you're inserting your hand into the Powerblock and it becomes part of your hand when you lift - very interesting design.

A bonus to purchasing this product over the other Powerblock here is that this one has room for purchasing the add-on weight kits from the Powerblock website. They are quite expensive though and I don't plan on putting more weight on these for now. They are just perfect for all the arrays of exercises you can do with adjustable dumbbells. I highly recommend these for anyone looking for weights to be able to work out from home!
