Wish there were more COLOR notebooks/laptops for Children!
This review is for; Vtech - Brilliant Creations Advanced Notebook My wife & I bought this for our young son to deter him from using our real laptop since he has a fondness for punching keyes and moving the mouse with his little fingers. Rated ages 5-8, I have to admit that I bought it for my son who is one to two years below that age group, but considering that the majority of laptops/notebooks sold for young children I've seen at local stores have monochrome LCD displays, this was the only notebook I saw that had vibrant colors that stood out over the rest. The VTech Brilliant Creations Notebook has a colorful 4.5" LCD display! An actual mouse is also included that is connected via a side port (appears to be a phone-jack type port that only accepts the included mouse & nothing else). An animated, talking Penguin appears frequently during most of the animated menus. As advertised it has over 120 functions for young children as it claims although my child & I are still counting. Functions include learing ABC's with sounds (phonics)for each letter and not one, but two word examples for most letters are presented although some word examples seem odd. For example the letter "M" is represented by monkey which is OK (a cute, animated monkey that chirps appears) and mug (an animated person drinks from a mug). "Mug" hugh? Other numerous functions include counting, basic math (addition & subtraction), memory exercises, matching exercises, story telling, reading, vocabulary, rhymes, synonyms & antonyms, filling in the blanks, letter spelling, science questions/learning, social studies, various games involving answering questions with letters or numbers, an art drawing screen that utilizes the mouse which can be saved in memory & some basic English-Spanish lessons (a little useful to my son since my family lives near a Hispanic neighborhood). All of the games & educational tasks have multiple levels of difficulty that can be adjusted as your child learns. There is also a "fun" button that does nothing more than execute about three different animation sequences with an animated penguin (so far my son's favorite button). The unit runs on four AA batteries & there is a power jack for an AC adapter, but no AC power cord is included. Bummer, would have been better if a AC power cord & rechargeable battery would have been included like a real laptop. It is small enough to take on the road to keep my son busy during long road trips in the car, but I worry about leaving it in the car unattended since it almost looks like a real laptop/notebook when closed. Despite the absence of a power cord, I still recommend this as my son so far is really having fun with it & most current laptops/notebooks for young children on the market lack the vibrant colors that the VTech Brilliant Creations Notebook has. I just hope there are more color laptops/notebooks for young children produced in the future as the plain monochrome, LCD diplays available now just don't cut it.

My 4 year daughter (just turned 4) wanted a more challenging laptop to play. So I spent hours researching online debating between laptops and tablet style options. This is what I wanted:

    1) color screen

    2) lots of challenging educational games, built-in (so I don't have to spend extra money buying cartridges)

    3) big screen

    4) thin, sleek design

    5) QWERTY keyboard

    6) a mouse

    7) Under $50

Well not only does this V-Tech laptop satisfy all my requirements it has even more that I never considered.

    8) excellent speakers

    9) includes a built-in TOUCHPAD

    10) mouse is detachable and optional (EXCELLENT mouse with realistic single-mouse click feel)

    11) COMES with batteries!!

    12) keyboard has a very realistic feel to it

    13) very intuitive feel on how to choose games and options. A 4 year old can figure it out.

    14) TONS of games under each category. The categories are: Story Book, Creativity Corner, Language World, Spanish Corner, Math Kingdom, Science Lab, Social Studies, and Brain Booster.

This laptop exceeded all my expectations. I would have purchased a tablet but the screen size for a tablet is a bit small and I would rather buy an iPad Mini than a kid tablet that needs extra cartridges for play. This laptop does not require any extra cartridges and has so many functions and games built in.

The manual says its recommended for ages 5~8 but I believe younger kids can play with this too. The new generation is born knowing how to use a mouse and keyboard. There's no need to wait until they are 5 to use this product. The graphics are quite colorful, a bit pixelated but it's $40. It's way better than our VTech Yo Gabba Gabba Learning Laptop!

Of course I would have given her one of my old laptops to play but she wanted something NEW and just for her. Well, this is it! And she can't crash this one!

This is a great laptop, for the most part. I bought it for my son because he had another V-Tech laptop that was designed for younger kids and he had pretty much outgrown every game on it, so he needed something new. The old one also had a keyboard with the alphabet in order and the mouse was extremely basic.

I wanted this one since it had a QWERTY keyboard and an actual working mouse, making it operate much more like a standard computer.

A lot of the games on this computer are ahead of him, but he is 4 and in preschool so he will grow into them. He loves the memory game though, as well as the story creator, and he likes to pull up the other games even though they are too advanced and play with them, which will help him learn them more quickly.

I think this will last him for at least a couple of years and was a good investment. By the time he outgrows this one, I'll be able to actually get him a regular netbook or something similar.

I have three gripes that I wish would be fixed, but they certainly are not dealbreakers. For one thing, the battery door over the battery slot broke, so now I have to tape it down to protect the battery. That was with normal use, no abuse or anything like that. It shouldn't have broken that quickly and easily.

The second thing is that there is no headset jack. I realize it isn't advertised to have one, but this is a nice enough computer that a headset jack would be a minor thing to add. I wanted this also for my son to take with him on the airplane in March when we go to visit my ex husband's family, but I'm afraid it will be too loud and disturb other passengers.

That brings me to my third gripe. There is a volume control, but it is limited. It pretty much just has loud, slightly quieter, and mute. The loudest setting is way too loud in most cases. The slightly quieter setting is still a little louder than I'd prefer, and would be too bothersome on the airplane, especially without a headset jack. The mute setting would allow him to play it with sight only, but some of the games ask you about the sounds, and I believe the sounds enhance the games so it doesn't make sense to have it on mute.

I don't understand why in this day in age headphone jacks and standard audio controls, which can make the volume gradually fade into a mute or vise versa, aren't commonplace.

That said, there is a lot for my son to do, and multiple skill levels so he can do more as he advances and really challenge himself. He loves his computer and wants to play with it frequently. I like to stay clear of too many electronic toys, but since this one is educational and one he loves, it is a good one to let him play on frequently.

I purchased this computer to give the grandkids an opportunity to learn how to use a computer and get educational value at the same time. The kids are 3 and 4 and ABSOLUTELY love this computer. There are so many levels of learning and also contains a great variety of subjects. They have even found and figured out how to use some of the sections of the computer that I didn't even know existed!!! I keep the computer at my house and they run right to it when they are here. A great value and durable. I can see the kids using this for a number of years as there are levels that get more difficult. BUY IT!! Also get the electric plug in cord.

We got this as a replacement for the one we had that our son wore out. This is a great toy for learning. The only thing on this that brought the stars down to a 3 is that you have to hold down the power button to turn it on for about 2 or 3 seconds before it turns on. Our toddler does not have the desire to wait for it to turn on while holding something down for so long. As a result he has lost some interest in using this VTech. The previous one he had was used so much that the hinged wore out and we were afraid it would be a problem if it separated into two pieces, hence that's why we got this one. However, its now a secondary or third on his favorite list. The VTech toys are great because of how much he has learned.. we had hoped the quality of this one was the same as the previous one we had.
